I originally found Darryl Hale on Yelp and had him prepare our taxes the last couple of years…read morewithout issue. This year Darryl reached out directly offering tax planning services. After paying the $2,500 assessment fee Darryl recommended two tax strategies, both of which raised significant concerns: 1) GFX Trading - a complex Series LLC foreign currency structure. This strategy was presented as a way to generate large tax deductions through foreign currency trading. When I asked for written explanations of how the strategy worked, what the economic substance was, and how it would hold up under IRS scrutiny, the answers were incomplete and at times inaccurate. When I declined to proceed, he called me immediately, insisting "everyone is doing this," and became defensive. I later understood that his affiliated company receives commissions from this arrangement, which was not disclosed before he recommended it. 2) DNA Harmony - involving the purchase of gift certificates for Jazz Band Splash red-light therapy. This was presented as a deductible expense through a separate Series LLC structure. Again, I requested information in writing about the IRS basis for deducting these types of purchases, but the responses did not address compliance, valuation, or audit exposure. When I decided not to move forward with either strategy based on the lack of clear documentation and concerns about risk, I requested a refund of my $2,500 fee. The request was denied. My experience did not meet the level of professionalism I expect from a tax advisor. I would not return nor recommend Darryl Hale and will be filing a complaint with the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility and notifying the California Franchise Tax Board.

Don't waste your time in this company. They don't even know who they want to hire. I got an…read moreinvitation to have face to face second-round interview today. However, they cancel it right before the meeting when I arrived at their office. The reason they told me is that they do not hire people who need a sponsor. But we had a phone interview two weeks ago with clear sponsorship required. The recruiter told me that his boss did not reply to him until 8 mins before the interview. Obviously, internal management is terrible. Also, this company shows no respect for your timing.

My father also was diagnosed with a serious heart condition so planning was important. . So I am speaking for all of us as I write this review. After attending the Zoom-Webex hosted by Tyson Mavar right at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 on my Chevron Pension Plan. There were slowdowns at Chevron in early 2020 and with the stress of Covid and potential layoff I needed someone to take some pressure off. After the Webinar we all still have many individual questions on when should we start my pension and retire, Chevron Lump or annuity, interest rates, Social Security offset issues and benefit commencement. So I booked an appt. After the appointment and then the second followup we all felt a form of relief. We now had a vision on the next 10 steps I would take through 2020 and 2021 and knew I would not make any substantive mistakes. In late 2020 bad news hit the family and my father passed away. Although not unexpected it still turned our world upside down. We are lucky to have made the Webinar and Zoom appt in early 2020 and lucky to have found The Retirement Group. It feels so comforting to know that Tyson and the TRG Team truly care about my family's Chevron retirement planning needs and goals. Their investment recommendations and strategies are tailor-suited just for us. We have been a client for over 14 months and have full confidence in the professionalism of our advisor. They understand our risk tolerance and Chevron retirement planning goals and provide me with a portfolio that meets my on-going needs. At family and friend get togethers we still talk to my fathers coworkers at Chevron about Dad and how The Retirement Group helped us get through those days. It sounds quirky but I got so excited when they sent me a beautiful plant with engravings on how we would grow through retirement as a thank you for referring other Chevron family friends to them. Also the little gifts of sugar cookies are the best, and send a signal that they are thinking about our needs.

A zero tax filing was all we needed. We sent our zero-tax filing to the FTB and after getting a bill with almost $700 in late fees we realized we sent the form with the wrong date - 2023 instead of 2024. We called San Diego, CPA to get some help on filing an amendment to this document. They tried to charge us $850 to file this amendment - an amendment we later realized involves changing a single number and checking the "amended return" box on our 568 Form. Inflation is bad but who knew five minutes of labor, printer ink, and postage cost so much! If my partner and I took the experts at San Diego, CPA at their word we would have wasted $850 for something we easily could do ourselves. Instead of trying to actually help us, San Diego, CPA tried to take advantage of our lack of domain knowledge and make a quick buck. San Diego, CPA caused both me and my partner considerable stress and I highly discourage people from conducting business with them.
