Safeway seems to never have in stock items that are on sale in their ad. If they know it's going to be on sale they should order sufficient quantities so they don't run out. It's very annoying that the only way I can get an item on sale is if I ask for a raincheck. Also, there is a mess on the entrance to the store that is disgusting. It's been there for weeks and staff has not cleaned it up. Someone apparently spilled something and it was walked through so many times that now it's a black disgusting stain. I think Safeway is awesome, don't care what anyone says. They have a great sourdough bread and carry my favorite vegan cheese. They also have Japanese eggplant often, which I love. THEY ALSO carry OYSTER MUSHROOMS almost every time I've gone!!!!!!! That is my favorite veggie and usually found only in Asian supermarkets. This review is just for the deli. Yesterday I went shopping and decided I wanted chicken wings. The flavor selections were limited: Buffalo (I could be wrong) and fried. The fried looked tasty so I chose them, asking for a dozen. After I arrived home and put the groceries away I sat down to enjoy a few wings. The breading was sooo HARD I could barely bite it. I am from out of town visiting our Family. I have gone three times in the last year to get assistance at the front desk cashing in lottery tickets, etc. and have been ignored or had to wait 10 plus minutes. It appears to be the same lady tall brunette didn't catch her name but I walked out today because she looked over at me several times did not seem busy or doing anything. Thank you, Safeway, for indulging me when I was craving some fresh cherries. We stopped at another grocery store in town and were disappointed to see a very pathetic and bad smelling produce section. I almost despaired until I Yelped for a grocery store in Sunsanville and this Safeway appeared. It's in a newer part of town and the store itself looked like it was built not too long ago. It was the traditional Safeway layout which made everything easy to find. The produce section was nicely organized with a plethora of fruits and veggies to choose from. And, yes, they had cherries - lots of them and they didn't smell or look bad!! Of course, the employees were very attentive and helpful and checkout was a breeze. No matter where I go, it's nice to know that Safeway will be there in my moment of need. *kisses* read more

Pretty decent store. But....ahhh, there's always a but when you don't make 5 stars. Amanda and Sailor--- in the deli section making sandwiches and etc? Here's the deal. It seems to me, ladies, that you should know that forks and napkins and spoons are essential to the deli business. After walking around and not finding any, you can imagine that the average Joe or...Jodi might be mildly annoyed. Not ticked..., not upset, just --you know kind of like a fly buzzing. No biggie. Upon asking for a spoon, you advised something to the effect that "you have to ask for spoons ..........now.....?" Whatever. After sitting down to my hot chicken soup, I noticed I didn't have a napkin. Back to the counter. "Excuse me, ma'am, any napkins?" Now I am 58. You? Well gentlemen don't ask nor do they venture to guess. Suffice it to say, I am older. So, the appropriate response ....I think, would be to say "very sorry, sir" or "one moment please and I'll help you out." Instead, w/o even looking at me you said...."--go over to Starbucks." So, now you mix in that annoyance with the fact that I can't find a dang napkin, had to search for a spoon and it's become a "double --maybe a triple whammy" if you will. (Depends on how you count, e.g., attitude, and whether you count the napkin and the spoon separately). I wandered over to Starbucks again and can't find napkins. NAAPPPPKINS! They're not in plain site, that's for sure. So back to the counter. I make a point this time of looking at your name tags. I ask, "can you please get some napkins" to which you respond "we're out, that's why I sent you over to Starbucks." OK, back over to Starbucks. I wait for the lady to finish with her frappe-whatever for a customer and ask for a napkin. She advised that they're back around the corner. Hidden in my view.....but----whatever, my soup's getting cold. Aside from the customer-service niceties and the fact that the deli is out of key utensils .....aside from the fact that Amanda and Sailor didn't seem to give a rat's behind....nor, apparently the store management, HERE IS WHAT GIVES ME HOPE!!!!!! Sailor tracked me down! !!!!!!! Yup!!!! She sought me out. I was at Starbucks sipping soup. She didn't apologize. Nor, did she smile . But, she did walk over to Starbucks where I was having my soup and asked why I looked at her nametag --which is not your everyday name--Sailor. I told her I just wanted a napkin. She advised again that she didn't have any. I said ---ok, thank you. But, the fact that she searched me out suggests she CARES. Perhaps there were other motives. Perhaps she was pissed that I dared to get her name. But, I choose to believe she CARES. In the future Amanda and Sailor.....I know work can be a drudgery....and people who are having bad days can add to your own difficulties....but; suck it up butter cup!!!! Smile. Try to be helpful. Smoke and joke with the customers dragging their feet in a funk. I'll bet if you make someone smile.....you'll feel better. That's all. Now get some forks, spoons, and napkins out. And if the manager says he doesn't have any; you might use it as your first joke to a customer who will look at you, relate, and be totally in synch with how you're feeling. Remember. Smile . Stopped by to get some food to make dinner. They have a lot of fresh vegetables. Actually, all their vegetables are really fresh compare to what you would see in LA. They have essential items but marked up pricer then you would find elsewhere. There is also a meat section here. I bought myself 4 pieces of salmon that came out to be around $24. The butcher was very friendly as well. What I really like about this store is how everything is really organized & clean. Would definitely return when I'm back in town. read more

This is a review for the bakery only, I worked here many many years ago and the service in all departments was great. What has happened in the last 16 years? Who knows! I called to place an order for a gender revealing cake as I wanted to surprise my parents and reveal the gender of our baby. I talked to 2 people in the bakery (the manager and an employee I believe) I explained what I wanted and they said they wouldn't be able accommodate my requests as some of their stuff is premade, totally understandable. So they suggested that I get the cake and they would put a layer of frosting in the middle (either Pink Or blue) to reveal the gender. Great. It all sounded good. I asked for the cake to be decorated in pastel colors, baby themed... maybe balloons or something baby related. That can't be that hard to understand. Oh boy, when I got there the cake wasn't done, mind you I was 2 hours late. The cake only had a border on the bottom in bright blue and bright pink. There was nothing on the cake but the wording "baby on the way..." which was what I asked for. I was so disappointed to see such a lousy decoration on the cake. Finally the cake decorator shower up and I told them that that was not what I had asked for. I clearly asked for pastel colors, like baby shower colors. She added decorations in black, blue and red. I continued to be in disbelief. Oh and I asked if they had added the layer of the blue or pink frosting and they said no. How was this supposed to be a gender revealing cake? One of the guys pulled out booties and asked if those would help. Which they did. Since the cake was so plain I asked for them to write on the bottom part "happy grandparents day" it happened to also be grandparents day. The writing was horrible, a 3rd grader would've done better job. The cake decorator offered to make me a new cake, but I was already so mad I just wanted to get out. I thought maybe I would just buy a cake from the case and call it a day, but the case was empty, only 2 cakes were left. I had to pay $26 for a horrible cake. At least it tasted good. Now I know why I usually pay 3 times as much when I go to an actual bakery, because I get exactly what I ask for. This will be the last time I get cake here, I'm better off just going for what is premade and in the case. read more

Here's another poor experience I've unfortunately had in Susanville, Ca. All I went into Safeway for was two sandwiches and chicken tenders. I walked up to the counter and waited for someone to show up at the deli to help. A woman came, asked how I was and I said fine thank you. I asked her how she was and she says "oh, just living the dream" completely sarcastically. She then took her sweet time to make a 12 inch sandwich that she stopped several times in the middle of making. She had to walk the length of the deli to go say hi to her work friends and they chatted a minute. She had also complained that the bread shipment didn't come and stopped to go look for more after telling her I wanted French bread. She came back after awhile and said I only have French bread- i told her that's fine l, it's what I had already asked for. She continued this take my sweet time attitude while the line builds up obviously as if none of us in line had things to do today. This went on through 2 sandwiches.. No joke- I'm at the deli counter for 15-20 minutes waiting for her to make the 2 sandwiches and grab 2 chicken tenders. This was about 9 am this morning. Btw- I went to purchase at the self pay- the guy overseeing the self pay walked away as soon as I got there. My self pay machine had an issue and I sat and waited for him to come back. I see he was at one of the check stands chatting with a coworker and he took his time to come help. What the heck is wrong with customer service?? I won't be returning to Safeway in Susanville or anyplace in Susanville for that matter. I drive through Susanville to see family 4 hours away from us. Cashier Dora is rude as hell. Worked grocery for many years so I have a soft spot for customer service workers I will ALWAYS be respectful and courteous but she tried to gaslight me into thinking I was being rude to her. I have heard there has been several negative encounters with Dora and many different customers at different times. Went into Susanville Safeway to get dinner for company and talked with deli clerk, asked about how fresh the chicken tenders were and they said they were fresh. got home and took one bite and breading was hard as a rock, broke a tooth i had just paid to get root canal and crown done on it. Called the deli and woman who answered was belligerent and rude and i had her on speaker phone and everyone in the living-room heard her and all agreed she doesn't need to deal with public but unfortunately she didn't give me a name. This is your typical Safeway store. Not locally owned, big, overpriced, and impersonal. I only come here for pinapple and flowers. And you are lucky if you can get through a check out stand in under 10 minutes. WHERE ARE ALL THE CHECKERS??? About 8 years ago, I was shopping with an 18 month old child. He was being your typical kid... grabbing everything, being loud, kid stuff. Well, my kid grabbed the donation jar of sometype and the checker slapped my son on the hand. We came in tonight to get supplies for Cocktails. They didn't have ANY cherry vodka in any of a variety of vodka makers, especially Frost. So when I was checking out I asked Jennifer P. The front end Manager if they had any Frost cherry vodka she snidely replied I never heard of that. Period, not let me check for you, nothing. OK I was disappointed. I had trouble with the Safeway club card and asked if it worked and she snapped yes it worked. I paid for my 19.57 total with a hundred dollar bill and she crumpled all the money together and put it in my hand, didn't even bother to count it out for me so I stood there and counted it out myself. She just hurried the next customer and kind of pushed me out of the way. If this is how their management is representing this store they should be ashamed. Susanville is a small town and has limited shopping options. This Safeway is pretty standard as far as Safeways go. It has a deli, bakery, meat counter, a floral department and a Starbucks. There is also a US Bank located inside. They make good deli sandwiches and have a pretty decent selection of produce. They also have a pretty decent selection of beer, wine, and liquor. I buy a lot of organic products. They do have an organic produce section, it's relatively small but the items they do have look pretty fresh. I can't always seem to get organic potatoes though. They don't have many options for organic yogurt, but do have a lot of milk and dairy choices available in organic. Safeway sells an uncured salami that is very good and reasonably priced. The meat selection offers grass fed beef and some organic chicken. Overall, the store can get pretty expensive so make sure you take advantage of the club card offers. The one thing I dislike about the store is that the women's bathroom is always dirty. It reminds me a little bid of a highway gas station bathroom. I wish they'd keep it cleaner. read more

I really hate to have to give this a 1 star..it much rather deserves a .5 or 0. I had my wedding in Susanville and solely relied on Safeway to make my catering tray, wedding cake and bouquet. The bouquet came out great and 2 of my 3 trays were good as well. Here's where we get to the fun part. The condiment tray was nothing more than some pickles, onions, tomatoes and lettuce stuffed into a plastic deli container. I specifically bought this tray so that I would have mayo and mustard on hand, but wouldn't have to buy a big tub. Mayo and mustard were no where insight and the tray was at the bottom of the stack of wrapped trays. They had plastic wrap around all 3 so they were a column. Didn't bother to check before I left the store to make sure it was alright. Strike 1. I'm almost embarrassed about how my wedding cake turned out. It looks like something a beginner did. We had to ask what some of the decorations on it were because we had no idea. Not only did I place the order 2 weeks in advance, but I had been talking to the bakery manager for about 4 months. She didn't have certain items that she said she would when I picked up my cake so I got what I got. The roses decorated onto the cake were drooping and looked more like melted swirls than roses. Strike 2. I accepted the cake and took it with me because I didn't have time to fuss about it and what was I going to do 45 minutes before the wedding. I got over it and assumed this is what you get in a small town. THEN when we go to cut into our cake it is not the kind of cake we ordered. We ordered marble cake and it was a white cake. Strike 3. Still tasted good, but not what I ordered. Needless to say I contacted corporate and they contacted the store. Upon talking to the store manager, I was almost made out to be a liar. He said the bakery manager told him that she had gone over the cake order with me several times and said she could not do a marble cake because it would crumble when we cut it because it was tiered. BS! If this was the case, I would have been expecting a white cake and been okay with it. So I called another local Safeway and asked them specifically if this would happen and they said absolutely not and whoever told you that doesn't know what they are doing or is very new to this trade. This would maybe explain why the cake looked the way it did. Anyways, corporate is still working on this issue and trying to get it resolved. The guy I talked to at corporate was flabbergasted that this even happened and was more than sympathetic about the whole thing. I would never return to this Safeway and would advise anyone looking for catering trays or a specialty cake to look else where. read more

Larger, tall male checker was extremely rude to me as i was purchasing alcohol. I shop here every single day and 100% understand the carding laws and even with a legal ID he extremely rudely questioned whether i was with a group of kids that were in line ahead of me. Mind you they were already shopping and we just all ended our shopping at the same time as lots of people do. I understand however this guy needs customer service training. If you want to find the store with the absolute worst customer service and longest lines, look no further. It's not the workers fault, no! It's the management. There are 6 or more check stands, but it's rare to see more than one open. What's not rare is to have a line of 8 to 10 customers waiting impatiently for the single checkout stand that's open. Almost every single time I'm in there. New management needs to be brought in and change the hiring practices for checkers. Ridiculous! Also, you'll find some of the highest prices of any Safeway anywhere. It's not that Susanville is out in the middle of nowhere, it's price gouging plain and simple. Went in to buy a $100 visa gift card for a retirement party. Checker told me I had to use cash to buy it. When I asked to use my debit card to purchase it she said no because I could close account when I leave the store. She said it was Safeway policy. So, I went to Safeway in Chico the following week. Not only could I buy a visa gift card with my debit card I could buy one with a credit card. Manager in Chico said he had never heard of any policies regarding this. May I please know why oh WHY can't they refill the cart sanitizing wipes by the door?? It's DISGUSTING. Every time I (have to) go there the cart wipes are empty. EVERY TIME. For many months now. I have mentioned it to checkers and various people in the store. I even called the manager. It seems like such a simple thing to do to keep germs from spreading.
