Overall, this Safeway store in Santa Cruz is a pleasant place to shop. The store is clean, well organized, and the layout makes it easy to find what you need. The atmosphere is nice, and most of the products are displayed neatly. However, I did come across some expired products during my visit, including a package of sausages that was past its expiration date. I think the store should pay closer attention to checking product dates, especially for refrigerated items. Other than that, it is a good store, but better quality control would make the shopping experience much better. read more

Dumbass cashier attendant racially profiled me. My boyfriend and I decided to buy a squishy and as we walked out she asked if we fucking paid for it. We aren't fucking dumbass we know the consequences for stealing so of course we fucking paid for it. Train your employees how to properly respond to real crime. This is so genuinely so upsetting and will be calling to report this to management. read more

The service in the deli was fast and just what I wanted. The food was delicious. Patricia was very helpful. I will go there again.

I came here early in the morning. I was blessed to have the opportunity to take my time while I shopped (without being harassed). My cashier was Melissa. She went above and beyond the call of duty! I definitely will be back soon. Highly recommended ( if your in need of groceries). read more

I spent 30 minutes shopping, only one checker was working. The person ahead of me was being rung up, the register crashed. A long wait, then Another checker came to fix it...~ 10 more min of my waiting. A 3rd checker came, and opened the adjacent lane, taking everyone behind me, 4 people. More time waiting for me, the checker was unable to reboot the system, and asked the person ahead of me to follow her and indicated to come also. After rechecking the entire order the woman had, the card she used crashed that regester. The manager should have been called to ring me up, or I should have been taken to the head of another register. No apology, no offer to help get me rung up, extremely bad customer service. read more

Corporate must not know nor care about the condition of this store. In my 50+ years of shopping at Safeways all over the USA this store might be the absolute worst of them all. The parking lot asphalt is crumbling. White lines for parking spaces evaporated decades ago. The store interior is dismal. Looks so old and tired. What is up with the floor? Bare concrete that has been cut up and patched 100's of times throughout the store. Inventory management is a problem. Many shelves of essentials were empty on a Monday afternoon. Because I could not find some items, I went across the street to the Grocery Outlet. Though that store is not great either it certainly is not as depressing as the Safeway. read more

The Safeway on Morrissey Blvd., Santa Cruz is a mess when it comes to checking out and/or asking to speak to a manager. It's impossible to phone them for customer service, also. No one picks up. I rely on this store for certain items that other stores don't carry. However, each time I go there, there is a problem with cash registers, etc. Today, in the middle of checking out my items, the cashier (Matthew?) all of a sudden, said something's wrong with his register, and I had to move all my items off the counter to another counter with a working register. Then, to top it off, he didn't give me my receipt which I, always, need. Now, I'm not sure how much I spent, and how much each item was. It never fails, each time I go to this Safeway, checking out is the worst. read more

Store number 799 Eril, The Hispanic man in charge at that time on 8/06/2025 My family's car had a dead car battery and I ask Eril if they sold or could help with some jump cables after we spent money for food there for our airbnb. Erik didn't even look me in the eye and said No we don't sell that and walk away Then I came back into the store to debrief with him that my family is save and we got the help we needed and to be kinder next time. his reply was incredibly shocking, Eril sttd. He was not on the clock and have a nice day and again was very rude and I was in disbelief We were a Hispanic family and we felt below him even though he looks expanding himself. He was one of the rare ones where he thought he was better than everybody. One of the employees stated to me that he was an asshole when I asked him for his name, which makes sense that he a thing about Earl. Do you give a man like that authority and he will take it over his head I'm very disappointed with this place first time visiting this town and that's the kind of experience I get at Safeway. This store is probably the most poorly managed store in all of Santa Cruz county. Just read the reviews. How could anyone defend how absolutely horrible this store is? Just go into the bathrooms. They WREAK of urine. No soap. Just an empty soap dispenser sitting on the side of the dirty, filthy, heavily graffitied sink. Just one. Broken and empty. Kinda like the way you feel when you shop there. And omg the management is even worse. The manager on duty was this woman named Delfina who lacks any sense of good customer service. Literally arguing with customers and walking away when challenged by her own words. Why is she even in charge, ever? The security guards in this store are homophobic and disgusting. When I was explaining to Delfina about the issue of no soap in the bathroom, the security guard came up and starting explaining that they don't put soap in the bathroom because people just take it. Literally that's what he told me. I was stunned hearing this and told him to please stay out of this because I was talking to the manager on duty. Not him. Because of this, he took it personally and asked me to leave. They have no soap. Allow customers to not wash their hands, then go touch produce and items with germs. It's absolutely vile that they operate like this. The health department should be called. Needless to say I refuse to ever set one foot in this store and based on the multiple reviews, many feel the exact same way. Do not ever shop here unless you enjoy being treated like absolutely crap. Also, just for reference, I ask that anyone reading this review go check out Trader Joe's and New Leafs Yelp reviews just so you know it's not a one time thing. Clearly other grocery stores in town are able to operate with much higher standards. This place is the absolute worst. Just do not go here. read more

The service from one of the register workers was some of the worst I've ever experienced. (For reference, his name is Matthew.) He first took a minute or two to even start ringing up our items. He then proceeded to not push the items close enough so I could bag them (there were no baggers attending any of the TWO lines kept open out of six). Absolutely ridiculous. read more

I get that they are open around the clock and the employees work hard, but this place is always a bit of a nightmare

I needed to use the restroom and there were 2 downstairs across a an aisle front m one another. They WERE BOTH OUT OF ORDER!. I asked if there was an employee bathroom. "Yes, it's upstairs". Maybe she hadn't noticed I was in a wheel chair. With no suggestion of where I might be able to go, she abruptly left me. I never went back there. Also, it appears to be a small store so I couldn't manage the aisles very well read more

Post Nuclear Apocalyptic Mad Max Road Warrior type store complete with Post Nuclear Riff Raff Trolls every where. I stay away for safety. But i did not know that delivery services would be as poor as a destitute gambler they were late they substituted poorly I did not need three types of sugars when they didn't have the one I wanted. They did not bother to deliver my beer and candy that is the sacrilege, did not even notify me I could've walked to the liquor store in a half the time it took to deliver my order which was three hours and waiting and because they didn't fill it all the way I would have had to wait the next day but I showed them I didn't order again and I won't order again because this store cannot get it right oh and they don't answer their phone so don't try contacting them. My advice is go to the Thunder Dome they would have better service. anywhere is better than this store. read more

I was recently shopping here. I am from out of town. I had trouble finding some items for my one year-old daughter and I happen to come across a Safeway employee named lizzy she was extremely kind, helpful and knowledgeable about all the baby products that Safeway can provide for me I would 10 out of 10 recommend shopping here for anyone who needs groceries or anything of the sort great job hiring lizzy Safeway she deserves a raise. read more

This was my neighborhood store but I'd rather go elsewhere from now on after being accused of trying to steal one of their stupid rotisserie chickens. I paid for it at the deli counter but the cashier at the front check lanes told me I couldn't leave and that I had to go to the customer service counter. I went over and the employee at customer service told me the cashier said I hadn't paid for the chicken. I was so embarrassed by the fuss they made that even after the deli lady confirmed I had paid, I left it there and walked out without even asking for a refund. read more

I heart the impossible burger much better than beyond burger. Why? With it's amorphous shape chefs can shape it into anything. for example, you might find yourself craving traditional pangolin Panini's. what was them being endangered and having sort of taking the blame for being the vector of that 'Rona your dinner guests are going to think twice about whether they'd like to eat something like that!! if that wasn't enough it is true that you can put onions, garlic and other seasonings right inside of the patty as you shape it. toss it into stirfries or green curry such as the product we see above And make no mistake: This thai green chili for curry is clutch. read more

Definitely a smaller and older Safeway but it has what you need, just not that big of a selection. The fresh fruit is definitely lacking and aisles are narrower. Parking is decent and it's right at a busy corner. Staff is friendly. Review #14 of 100 for 2022. read more

WARNING: ALOT OF "KAREN"s WORK HERE. I came here to get some change but also to pick up some bread. The lady who was at my register immediately snapped at me to keep my distance even though I was at the right spot marked by Safeway themselves. And then when I asked for some quarters which she did not have any, she asked another cashier...Caucasian female Two registers away and ask for quarters. They both knew I asked for quarters. I stood at the end of the second female cashiers check out and she completely ignored me. I decided to go to the customer service desk. While I waited there, I looked back at the second female cashier and we made eye contact but she gave me the ugliest look. If I could give less than one star for this place I would. This was my second trip at this particular Safeway and I will never come here ever again. read more

Did they completely get rid of baskets and checkers? It's always been a sad Safeway but now it's just miserable.

Small but well run grocery store. I've had good experiences with the managers, pharmacy, meat department, and cashiers. Produce is nice, too. Today Sabrina helped me track down frozen OJ on her meal break! read more

So I've worked at a Safeway in LA with twice he foot traffic and the same number of employees, so I feel confident saying this one is terrible. Freezers constantly give freezer burn to all the icecream and it feels like its always under construction. My defining experience was I bought tartar sauce that turned out to be expired by like a year. When I came back for a refund, the manager got into a yelling match with me until she realized the rest of the tartar sauce was also expired so she couldnt give me an exchange. Anyone at my old job who acted like that would get their walking papers on the spot for acting like that, so dealing with a MANAGER who had that attitude was eye opening. Wish I could give less stars lol read more

In short, drive a bit farther to the 41st Safeway because it's beyond worth it. They are often out of product here or have product that is soon to expire. Service is poor: super slow, not very helpful, and had my last checker wipe his nose while my reusable bag was in the same hand. Also, it's not faster using the self check out cause there are often issues with it. There's sometimes a security officer, but the last time is was a manager who was very looming over her staff at the entrance. Overall just really not a great store despite the location being nice (the inside is also cramped and dated). Oh, and be wary when driving in that parking lot! Had way too many close calls with cars there. Worst grocery store in town that I've experienced. Seems like it's the same for most people who have reviewed, too bad the business isn't doing anything to fix it. read more

BAIT-&-SWITCH! The weekly Safeway advertising that clutters my mailbox promotes the most consistent & shameless examples bait-&-switch I've ever seen. Discounted items are routinely missing. When I find someone to ask about it, I'm simply told they're "sold out" and I'm out of luck -- even when the ad doesn't have the lame "While Supplies Last" excuse. This can happen long before the advertised deadline. When that happens to you, and you complain, expect to be told "the employee who handles that department isn't in now." Right across the street from this Safeway is the Grocery Outlet -- which I give 5-stars, and I have no hidden reason for doing so. PS: The Safeway premises typically have homeless types hanging around. That much I don't blame Safeway for, but that's the reality. read more

Well, ivcant say after 2 yr when i first gave this store a review that its any better. Actually now they close early,,open late basically open or clise doors whenever they're feelin like it. Countless times Ive gone there 15 up to 30 min before their hours of operation hours say they close only to find that theyve decide to close early,, ussually im not the only one whos made the trek over to the atore only to discover that theyve decided to close early.. soo lame m, thanks!! Glad i wasted that time, energy and gas driving over to thisb store only to find out that Ehh..sorry..were closed.. The kicker is that they have to stay and stick shelfs after its closed .. so why are they shuttijg down early? I know they hate the customers and they're on cashiers that's why they let the lines stay at about 6-10 deep Grocery outlet please@aq extend you're hours please!! read more

For some reason my review from three years ago is no more.. SIGH. I have been shopping here for the past five years or so and I have never had a negative experience minus some ricotta cheese (which I got a refund for with no issues). I come early in the morning or around dinner time to avoid the chaos of mid morning/ afternoon rush. They are super helpful and always ask if everything is okay (but not in a creepy I am watching you sort of way). The men and women at the check out in the morning are always cheery.. maybe its the cigarettes and caffeine in the morning or perhaps it is because I avoid when the crazy customers come in... I usually come in when they are switching out products so other than the ricotta incident I haven't had the same experience as the other yelpers. read more

This is the midtown edition of safeway santa cruz which is very much the old school grocery experience. Seriously if you want to see what the typical grocery store looked like in 1970 come here. While there is a sizeable parking lot it's not always the easiest to be in. It's one way for the most part and of course people don't think that one way applies to them-thus you have good odds of facing down an irritable wrong way driver who is in a terrible hurry to be in the horrible grinding traffic that is Soquel in the summer. when Also the corner spots facing soquel -by that thrift store and beer tasting room-can be quite sketchy. Use caution when leaving your car here. Urban rules apply here-nothing of value visible from the windows. Also while as far as I know no ones reported having a car stolen from here, about once a month the police recover a stolen car from this lot, which is discouraging. The store itself is smaller then a fully modern location, and the entrances don't make any sense. Basically there are two dedicated exits and one entrance both of which are counter intuitive if well marked. Come here one time, you'll see what I mean. As this is a smaller store it's almost-but not quite a full service store. No bakery, florist, starbucks etc. As it's very much on the smaller size finding things can be miniature scavenger hunt at times. The produce section is one of the smallest in the area, even if it is all organic. Once you've almost found everything you've came for and have given up hope for what you couldn't find it's time to run the checkout gauntlet. While usually-say eight times out of ten-the line for the checkout isn't bad, those last two times can be painful. There are lots of non safeway employee reasons for this. If anything the staffers here are some of the better sorts of folks you'll find at safeway, but this store is not laid out for speedy operations. At times this is compounded by customers for various reasons. In the daytime in the afternoons there are a lot of shall we say folks rich in experience who have been completely left behind by this modern world. So a small 1970's styled store with excellent employees but a high risk not being able to find what you want and a fair chance of taking longer then you think to get in and out. Three stars seems fair. read more

Angel is amazing! She is so helpful every time I come into the store. She cares so much about every Safeway customer and it shows!
