Once again Saint Helens Safeway has posted signs in self checkout of 15 items. Busy with Thanksgiving and they have a line down the aisle from self checkout and aren't enforcing it so why have it? It's not intended for large orders. When asked about the customer service desk says they don't enforce it. Also, they took down the line about no bottle drop vouchers at self checkout. Some cashiers take them and some don't. Consistency is key to good customer service. Fred Meyers out does Safeway by a landslide. Why can't the self check out person handle vouchers, etc. at the unit instead of transferring? Only store I have seen this. I ran a self checkout area for years, isn't rocket science. Do better, unfortunately this Safeway has really gone down hill in the last 5 years. read more

Did a 10 hr drive for an engagement, photo shoot and the floral manager with brown hair. A bigger girl did not want to help me put my arrangement together, which was literally just two bouquets. She said that she was off the clock, but yet after she was doing what she was doing at the desk she was laughing and talking at customer service. It is unfortunate. I'm just going to put my own bouquet together and just smash them together. We were just gonna carry them anyways, but whatever thanks for nothing. We drove from another two states away just for this horrible service. Don't know why she's a manager. Would've took less than a minute, but she spent time laughing. My main issues with this Safeway was the horrible parking lot with very limited ADA that was super challenging to get in and out of. The store is very run down looking. I was looking for a veggie tray and wow - some of the veggies in them were actually GREY... like rotting. It was pretty gross but a great deal of the produce was pretty terrible making me miss the Safeway closer to home but also making me realize why I shop at Safeway not very often. read more

Ordered the 40 piece chicken nuggets and some "wing zings" which they had labeled mandarin sesame, noodles. Chicken nuggets were fresh and tasty better than McDonald's. 10/10 The noodles were a first for me it's basically canned mandarin oranges nuts and sweet chili sauce mixed in with linguine noodles. I was born and raised in this town and this store has always gone above and beyond for my entire family, helpful, respectful, staff. Back before all you people started flooding this town with all your overly opinionated big city crap, life was really simple. Just remember it's YOU who moved to our small town! Anyway they helped me put in my card numbers manually when my magnet strip wouldn't work. No other store would help me out with that. I was unable to pull cash out of the atm banks were closed. I'll start by saying that I have never had any issues with this store. Employees are always helpful and friendly. Then last night I meet Sunny. It might be a policy to check ID before selling beer but If you are a senior citizen like myself, I find it ridiculous and offending. I have grey hair and a grey beard! Over 40 years past my 21st. Back to Sunny. He asks for my ID and I ask why. He tells why and I tell him its obvious I'm a senior citizen. Sunny, raises his voice and said "you want me to lose my job". That was a trigger for as someone more than half my age giving my attitude. I told him to keep the beer and told him he should talk to his manager about common sense! The beer was pushed aside and the transaction was completed. I did tell him I'll get my beer down the rode where they are more polite. Not even a thank you. Is it just me? I like the foods and staff at our Safeway. No grocery store in Col. Co. is reasonable because they have a captured audience. I do not feel inclined to schlepp to Beaverton thru hoards of traffic for groceries. Our Safeway is getting more and more organic items which we appreciate since Monsanto and Big Agra are trying to poison us all. My only complaints are that I hate how terribly small the store is. All of the extra stacks of "display" items in the aisles are a real pain in the arse to maneuver around. The aisles are already narrow and crowded just with there are shoppers trying to get around. They should buy the furniture store next door and expand this store. There are so many huge, well-stocked Safeways everywhere else. Why have we been left behind. If Safeway won't upgrade their store, maybe a WINCO would be an improvement except they lack a good variety of organics. read more

They have some deals and their products are fine. Staff is pretty friendly. Produce department is usually very fresh, meat department is great. Bakery has a lot of good products and the staff is pretty helpful. Deli has some good choices but don't dare stop around lunch time because the place gets pretty busy with the high school next door. The big problem I have is the lack of checkers. Don't dare think for even a minute that you'll run in and run out. This Safeway never has enough check out help and it seems the lines are five or six deep. Not the fault of the checkers it might very well be the management? So if you have time stop by just expect it to take awhile to get out. Also to add parking can be difficult as well. read more

I'm going to be honest. Some of the staff here are really excellent. David the manager is always pleasant. But I really don't like buying food here. The produce isn't the greatest and we stopped buying meat here because, more often than not, it makes us sick. And half the time their bread and fresh baked goods are moldy off the shelf. And the big killer? They have no sushi. Not that I would eat it from this Safeway. Not to mention they're obsessed with masks even though the virus is smaller than the fabric mesh. read more

I'm very glad this store is an option in St. Helens. I find the items available meet my needs. I look forward to their coupons and use them whenever possible. I was there yesterday and selected the wrong item to use with a coupon and I also inadvertently picked up a case of eggs without checking them, and sure enough, some eggs were missing. The lady at the cash register was very nice and the issues were taken care of quickly. This is not the first time I've received excellent customer service from this particular lady at the register. She has always been attentive, gracious and always smiling. She is certainly the person I would select to represent any kind of business dealing directly with consumers like me. read more

They need a negative star rating for this store. There is NEVER anyone at "customer service" and you can wait forever and they still will not come up there. The meat dep't. is often without a butcher to answer questions, The isles are crowded with extra boxes, stacks, and displays that create real traffic jams all over the store. It's a small store for a Safeway, so they really do not need isles stacked with items already on their shelves. Their prices really aren't very good and we laugh at the supposed savings listed at the bottom of receipts. They are "savings" only if you normally pay twice the going rate for each item. That card thing is meaningless for consumers. This is the closest major market to us, but we seldom go their because of their high prices and other problems as listed above. It also seems like a disproportionate number of reportable crimes happen in their parking lot. Maybe they need security cameras or something. I wish it was a WINCO instead. read more

Cramped. They really need at least 50% more space but corporate is not interested, they do a face lift every 20 years and call it good. It's not good. The aisles are narrow and the shelves stacked high; it can be difficult to scan and find something, especially when there are other customers. Usually, I find women with carts and toddlers are aware of their surroundings and cooperate. But life can be tough up her- not everyone is in a mood to cooperate. The bakery, cheese, alcohol area is also cramped and there never seems to be anything appealing from the bakery, the croissants are good, the fresh baked bread is edible. The produce area is less cramped than the rest of he store. The produce is definitely third class though, we buy packaged lettuce and occasionally some carrots or broccoli. The demand for Organics is less than the supply and the offerings are often rubbery, skip the organics. Interesting assortment of brands, especially in hair care, and so forth. The meat is okay if you get there early. The quality is slightly better than the produce. By 4pm, it can be hard to find something appealing. The dairy is in the far right corner and that's where we all bump into each other. I do not like going to the dairy corner. It doesn't smell like roses in this store, but it doesn't have that "stale market smell" either. Check-out is cramped and there's often a line 4-5 deep with just 2-3 cashiers working. There's limited space to form lines and if you're not careful, someone may accuse you of "cutting". The can and bottle machines tend to act-up and the staff is good to send someone fairly quickly. The discount program is stupid, not easily linked to a phone number or account and the patrons are supposed to show red discount cards. They should fix this. What about the staff? Are they walking around the store looking to help people find canned corn? Not a chance. However- I usually like the hard working cashiers who are competent, some are friendlier than others but they keep things moving. Baggers are sometimes available and they do a pretty good job corralling the stray shopping carts. So this is what we do- buy our meat and vegetables at New Seasons maybe once a week or so. On Sundays, we drive to Fred Meyer and do the weekly shopping. If we forget or something comes-up, we head here. There's also a Walmart in town but they don't really have groceries. There are a few smaller markets and I'm partial to IGA type place on Columbia Blvd located near where the road becomes one way. read more

This Safeway is absolutely a pain to shop at. The parking lot is not designed to make for anything other than a mess. The parking spots are too close together and just to small. The store itself is a mess. The aisle are extremely small and won't allow for more than ONE shopping cart in the aisles. The registers are always backed up and not properly staffed. Due to the shelving, it causes confusion and a traffic jam at the one or two open registers. It is extremely frustrating and I will shop at Fred Meyer in Scappoose in lieu of this location. I generally consider Safeway to be a 3 star experience but I have such a negative experience every time I visit this store that I'm compelled to write a review and also score them down two stars. The whole Safeway club card is a major gripe of mine in the first place as it is something you must opt into to get an item for the price that any other store would just charge you without any nonsense like that. I actually have a card but since I refuse to share my personal info with that company it isn't under my real phone number but rather a fake one that I set up years ago. So, basically I can never remember that number if I forget my card. Normally, the cashier just says no problem cheerily (at other Safeway stores) and swipes their own card or a card they have lying around. On one visit I was told that if that happened then that person should be disciplined. REALLY???! You'd discipline an employee for helping a customer and doing something to increase flagging customer loyalty? They explained that they wouldn't be giving me the club price unless I held up the line by filling out a new application. I informed them that I wouldn't be doing any such thing and left on the spot without my groceries and without paying. I won't be extorted. On another visit, the meats department was unattended for about 20 minutes. There was a restless line and people kept circling to see if anyone was back to take orders yet. Another visit the store was out of Chicken.... I'm not kidding. Or maybe they had just failed to stock the meat case with it? Super massive fail. read more

The store is clean and I haven't had an issue with items not being stocked yet. My problems are usually with the cashiers. It really annoys me when I'm being rung up but my cashier hasn't said a word to me, much less looked at me, because she is still holding a conversation with another cashier who is complaining about her job. The worst part of it all is when you read her name tag and it says "supervisor" or "asst. supervisor". I don't really remember the title one of them had in particular but it did make me think... huh, really? You're in charge? Also, because they are too busy talking to each other or the other customers that like to hang out at the grocery store, they always miss my orange sticker items. Maybe the people who put on the orange stickers should put them over the original barcode. Seems like it would solve a lot of problems. If they had a self checkout lane I would use it so I wouldn't have to interrupt their personal conversations. Until then, if I have time, I just go to the Fred Meyer in Scappoose. read more

This review is based on this particular location's lack of kindness and organization. I've been to a dozen Safeway stores and this one by far has the rudest staff. I was there this evening with barely any other customers and somehow the two open check stands had lines into the aisles of the store and moving at a snail's pace. It took almost ten minutes of standing in line before an employee opened up another stand. Every time I visit, with no exception of this evening's visit, I'm sure to be met with employees talking smack about other employees as they're stocking shelves, an annoyed "hey" by the cashier and no gentleness whatsoever with my groceries. There was even one instance when I asked for 1/4 lb of ham and while the lady at the meat counter was slicing it, said "these people" to her coworker while shaking her head. It's as if the employees don't want you there at all, and it's no secret they DEFINITELY don't want to be there. Trust me, I wish I could take my business elsewhere. If an attitude adjustment is too much to ask for, please install some self check-out stands so I don't have to listen to employees moan and complain and stop coming home with bruised fruit and crushed chips. I have had my prescriptions filled at this chain for years, but never again. Having moved from a location some 4 hours away 2 + years ago, I finally switched pain management doctors to my local PCP; I had a recent script, still good from my former doctor. After consulting with my PCP, asking them what I had asked my other doctor ( something one of them had actually suggested at an earlier visit ), they gave me a small temporary supplement to my script, plus outlaid a new course of treatment ( other than drugs ). I suggested they simply take over my pain management; so they have control of all pain drugs I take. They then notified my pain management doctor from where we had moved. Who, unknown to me, now called this pharmacy telling them not to fill this script he had already given me. So, here I am, a Friday, with a legal script ( I saw no need to ask my PCP to write another for the same amount, they were to provide ), I go into Safeway; now they say my doctor from previous locale called and said: do not fill that script! Great! It is almost 5:00 PM, I now cannot get a refill from my PCP and we are scheduled for an out of town doctors appointment for Monday, we leave Sunday, be back late Tuesday. So I did what anyone else would do: had it filled somewhere else. The script was legal. Then suddenly, Safeway calls, the next Thursday ( now I am the criminal apparently ), to notify me they will no longer fill my scripts. Rude! My advice: Find a pharmacy that knows the facts before they make a judgement call. Oh well, after that treatment I was going to drop them anyway; but now it is their entire grocery business. One other bonus: I was forced to pay cash at the other pharmacy as my PCP had given me this small temporary supplement of the same drug. Insurance for that reason would not pay. The amazing thing: the cash price was less than I was paying at Safeway with insurance! read more

Compared to ANY other store, Safeway falls a notch or two below the local Walmart, in terms of hours of operation and of course price. Compared to other Safeway Stores, especially the ones with which I am by far best acquainted--- St. John's, MLK, Jantzen Beach, and the former Interstate store (now New Seasons), this is a 5+++ Shopping experience! The staff is so much more alert and friendly and available! Most if not ALL of the check out lanes are usually in use--compared to one or MAYBE two as you'll frequently see in No Po. If you're total shopping experience runs more than 10-15 minutes TOPS, it's b/c you planned it that way, or sat and had lunch over @ the deli. read more

The food is Expired!! I wanted to buy Jerky for my husband (the expensive delicious kind) and it had expired 2 months ago. I kept checking back to see if they had gotten fresh stock but 5 months later they still have the expired stuff (is there nobody to check on that?). I have bought other items I had to take back for the same reason. I have gotten in the habit of checking the dates and have noticed a lot of the items in the cold cases are expired or will expire in the next day. It wouldn't be a problem but I need these things to be able to sit in my fridge for a day or so :( The other problem is having the Safeway Club Card isn't enough! They force you to play the coupon game or go and have coupons put on your card "Just for U" because shopping isn't a big enough pain. I have refused to buy several things because of this. This store is so overpriced it makes me wonder what people are doing for a living to be able to shop here?! The people working here have been pretty nice, some just look defeated but are decent just the same. Oh, and the rotisserie chicken I got was really really dry but they took it back :) Just bought a hot turkey chunk from that same section the other day and I'm not going to do that again. My guess is folks think not having a self check out is saving jobs and money, but having to wait chronically in long pointless lines makes this store one to avoid (and guess I'm not the only one). I think this particular Safeway is probably fine if you've been a local your whole life and like chit chat, but not particularly friendly or efficient otherwise. St. Helens Fresh Market is tiny but much quicker and staff more friendly. read more

I hate the parking lot.... The store is bigger than Claskainie, smaller than Astoria. This means I can get my groceries without dodging the pharmacy line, aisles of non- grocery items.. In and out. The aisles are narrow, so speeding with a shopping cart, or passing is dangerous. Bending over to reach the bottom shelf... Not pretty. The check stands are staffed, and employees are friendly. The produce is fresh, the meat department isn't stinky, and it has a fairly good wine selection. I just hate the parking lot..... read more

Worst store ever. Most of the cashiers are rude, unfriendly, give no help whatsoever and just let you stand there like an idiot. Just now Samantha M checked me out. Not very friendly at all it was obvious she didn't want to be there. she didn't say a word to me except when I asked her if the b1g1went through. They're too expensive to be acting like this. Lots of customers in store and only 2 check out lanes and 1 of those cashiers was busy texting...!!!maybe it's the way the managers treat them that makes them terrible at their jobs. This store is NOT service oriented. If you want service at their service center be prepared for safeway to benefit MOST from the experience. I wanted to get a money order tonight and found out they won't accept my debit card for it. I HAVE to have cash to buy my money order, and yes they have an ATM but I can only get X amount out of the machine at a time, so I could go buy something, I don't want or need to get cash back. But what the heck happened to helping out the people in your community? Once not too long back I wanted to buy a roll of quarters from them, and they were willing to sell them to me, but once again I HAD to purchase something from them so they could exchange my 10.00 for a roll of quarters, so my quarters ended up costing me 12.00. And let's talk about produce!!! OMG, I tried to buy ginger and horseradish root from them this past summer, they were all rotten. Tried to buy carrots from them, only had packaged and they were all rotten. Let's not even get talking about the check out, they never have enough people up front. Yep not setting foot in there again! I'll drive to Long View or Scappoose first, or hey I'll go with out. UGH!!! read more

This store thinks it's Whole Foods. It carries the exact same food selections as Wal-Mart, Winco Foods or Fred Meyer but charges 2-3 times as much as other stores. Even with the "membership card" their prices are still 30-40% more expensive than Fred Meyer. The cashiers are slow, the wait times are long and the parking lot is designed in the most ridiculous way you could design a parking lot unless your goal is to make it extremely difficult to get in or out of. read more

It may be one of the very few places to get groceries in Saint Helens, but it's still a place I regularly visit. The store itself is up to date, they have a stellar deli, and the staff is always helpful and cheery. Many years shopping here and I've had little to no problems with anything!! read more

It is unfortunate that this is our only big grocery store for 17 miles. Let us start with the rotting pile of cantaloupes, thankfully their fragrance over powers the slimy black spotted green beans and moldy potatoes in the back of their abusively over priced produce department. All tough many of this stores employees are very nice and helpful, They can only work with what they are given, and here it aint much! The meat department is regularly out of chicken, I was told "this happens every month for the first half of the month because people use food stamps and buy them out",...Really? every month! One would think that ordering MORE would be reasonable. There is much room for improvement. I used to love this place, until one day I dropped a peach onto the ground and a worker came over. She was quite old, I would say about 200 years old. She had no teeth at all, except maybe one.. and 3 eyes. I tried to run but she stuck her 11.5 foot long tongue out at me and it stuck to the back of my neck and pulled me back in. I thought she was gonna kill me, and she almost did, but then Superman came in and saved my life. What a great guy! Anyways, I ate the peach afterwards, and boy was it tasty! 5 stars :) read more
