I went for ice cream which seems to help my wife's migraines. Haagan daz was $2.99 with coupon 5.99 without. After trying multiple times to get the digital coupon to work i asked for help. the person could have overridden the system but instead just let me fail. after about 15 minutes i left without purchase. I drove to the SE 122 Safeway and they helped me get the sale price. The person who wouldnt help was mean . I was frustrated and upset. Its called customer service. I think it is the worst scam to have digital coupons that are hard to access. read more

Safeway is using very deceptive advertising. The promotional add says one thing, the in store signage and packaging show very something different and then the store clear way overcharged by $52! In store manager says to call corporate customer service. Customer service phone connection is very bad but only becomes clearer when they refer us back to the in store manager. Then they drop the call! So ridiculous False advertising, bait and switch and is a scam! We will plan to never step foot in a Safeway ever again! read more

This review is mainly for the amazing, helpful employee that works in the wine and beverage area, unfortunately I didn't get his name. He was not only helping out an elderly man select a nice wine for his family but helped him load it into his cart for him and helped him select a beer he thought the customer would enjoy. It was class A customer service at it's best. I watched him because I was waiting to ask him about an item I was looking for, Spindrift Spiked, he was more than happy to assist me and while they were out, he asked me to hang tight and that he would go to the back and see if he could find more. He came back out with two big boxes of this item, he was very nice about it, he was kind and Safeway, is so lucky to have him. You would think with the skyrocketing prices, Safeway would be able to afford to keep their stores stocked and in good repair. It's gotten to the point where, without fail, they 100% won't have what I've gone there for, no matter how early I get there. To try and solve this, I even went so far as to order online, thinking that they could set something aside or make something fresh. No dice. They substituted every single item in my order, one of which had absolutely nothing to do with what I'd ordered. I'd say "do better," but I'm not certain it'll matter for me. This is your typical Safeway. With so many option on this part of town (Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, New Season, Fred Meyer) I only come here when there is something specific in sale that I need. Even then, I always have to watch carefully as my items are wrung up because so many times, more than other stores, Safeway's registers don't always ring up the sale price. Yesterday had to drive all the way out to this location because I live downtown, and due to the riots and curfews, all the stores mentioned above closed at 6 to give their workers time to get home before 8pm. Was able to get the produce I needed for dinner, and while walking down the aisle with Asian condiments, found the absolute best utensil to use when making stir fry in my wok; a blend of a spatula and strainer. Super cool and only $5.99. Plenty of parking, They have a Starbucks inside, on Fridays they have the usual $5 specials. There are aprox 16 self checkouts, although I noticed they don't close every other one for purposes of social distancing like all other stores now do. What's up with that? They've recently installed a gate system here to deter theft. Maybe I'm just imagining things, but there seems to be more tension in the air. I hope that the Safeway/Albertsons corporation is not so distracted by theft/loss statistics that they've neglected employee appreciation (especially appreciation of the folks who stuck around through the first couple years of the pandemic). I really appreciate having this Safeway so close to home. Can't have a good Safeway without the right staff! Holy crap, this Safeway makes me mad! Look, I'll shop anywhere, and I LOVE specialty grocers (Uwajimaya, I love you, baby!), farmers markets, and Mom-and-Pop shops. But sometimes that thing you need is only available in the big boxes, and I'm begrudgingly forced to patronize one of them (having kids and needing to buy in bulk only exacerbates this problem). Living in the near food drought of Sandy Blvd in NE Portland, where a decent supermarket (and I emphasize SUPER; I'm not talking about smaller, specialized grocers, of which there are myriad) is always 10-15 minutes away, Safeway is one of the two options (the other being WinCo on 102nd Ave). Any every time, without fail, some common item I'm shopping for is out of stock. Every. Single. Time. It would be one thing if it weren't so frequent, so common, and so egregious. And with some items, it happens repeatedly. If you are constantly selling out of something, order more of it. For Frank's sake, get a computer to do it for you. I long for the gentrification of NE Portland, and the manifestation of some quality food stores. Grocery Outlet ain't cutting it. Hell, give me the pretentious competence of a Trader Joe's or a Whole Foods. I'd gladly pay extra for a store that strives for excellence, instead of one treading water, kept afloat by being the only supermarket of significance in a several mile radius. read more

I used to be a daily shopper at this Safeway when I worked down the road in the mid 90's to early oughts and I thought pretty highly of the team here. Nice part of being a frequent flyer is you build trust and relationships with those that are on sight every day. As the years went by and remodels become outdated, I always enjoyed how this Safeway retained the same feel to it and you could interact with many of the same faces over time. I am hardly ever in here anymore, but when I stop in it still has some of the same charm it did for me many years prior. We have no choice, we're closest to this grocery store than any other stores, well there's Freddies @ Gateway and/or Hollywood West, but Safeway is the ONLY grocery large enough to find 99% of what we need, weekly. No, Whole Foods is out! Why 99%? Since Aug. I've been searching foods my husband craved for (broken ankle, long story short), so I'm back in charge of the kitchen. He send me text, photos, descriptions, and each time I go shopping THEY ARE NOWHERE to be found! Weekly, I keep asking: 'maybe it will come Friday.' They never did We've tried the Deli, the Florist, the Pharmacy. We've tried them all, and they don't disappoint. Our favorite is their ribs, we always buy the full rack, and they put extra sauce, more than enough for the our leftovers, too! The last time we bought Fried Chicken, I waited for 20 mins. I finally change my mind and bought something else. We did went back, another day, because I was craving for fried chicken, this time they have a good supply of them. When I got home, they were SOGGY! That just about lost my appetite of what Fried Chicken is all about, when I was craving for something more on the crispy side. The chicken was tough as leather, too! I think, that's the last time we'll buy that! Four stars are for the 'other things', + the customer service . . . they always give our money back, as long as we have the receipts! I'm a bougie shopper, no shame. I go to several different super markets depending on where I think I can get a superior product. No store has everything I want, so I was in the habit of making a lot of stops. Then it happened, the Year of the Flu, 2020. And I really had to stop going out so much. One stop grocery shopping? Can't beat my neighborhood Safeway. The produce department is first class, with a great selection of both organic and standard items. They have everything I need. In one trip my list included garlic, onions (red and yellow), shallot, kale, red chard, fresh basil, ginger root, oranges, green onions, radish, jalapeno peppers, and arugula. They had everything and it was all in great condition. I like ranch beans. Not those ranch beans! These ranch beans, this one particular type of ranch beans. Guess who has them? Uh huh, Safeway. Only Safeway. Sometimes Freddy, but always Safeway. And Jiffy Muffin Mix? Safeway. I don't need muffin mix, but I like it. It's a item from my childhood that I use when I need a hug. You know what I mean. By the way, a can of those ranch beans, layered with some TJ's soyrizo (that is the only soyrizo worth eating), and then topped with Jiffy Corn Muffin mix and baked, makes an awesome casserole. Top it with chopped cilantro, raddish, and some plain greek yogurt. Serves four hearty breakfast diners. And ... everything else. Dairy, cheese, wine, baked goods. I found canned apricots! I love canned apricots. Here you go - take a can of apricots and drain them, place in a bowl with about 1/3 cup ricotta cheese, add about a tablespoon of honey, and blend that up until it's all smooth and gorgeous. Spreadable sweet apricot cheese - on toast or crackers, on pancakes, in a crepe, on pound cake, with sliced strawberries or other berries ... you tell me what you would use it for. You can use that same trick with ricotta to make a herb cheese spread, or a spicy cheese spread. It carries other ingredients like a charm - sweet or savory. And you can get all that stuff at Safeway. Cashiers are really nice, other shoppers are a mixed bag - hey, it's Portland! They have very good Covid protocol right now to keep the spread of germs down. Whoever designed the parking lot, rows, exits and entrances, deserves a beating, but hey! You can't have everything and I don't know about you, but most parking lots seemed designed for maximum frustration. If you are looking for a supermarket that can be your one stop, where they are likely to have everything on your crazy list, then I would strongly suggest this Safeway. read more

I have been a customer with the pharmacy here for quite a while. Everytime I call (if I can even get through) they are nasty and rude on the phone. To be more specific the females that work here. They are rude and unfriendly. They have very poor attitudes. This is not how people should be treated. I hope they do something about how nasty and rude they are! read more

The two-star "Meh, I've experienced better" rating perfectly fits this branch of Safeway. Safeway on NE Sandy is a store you go to if you absolutely have to. Fred Meyers, New Seasons, Whole Foods, Costco -- you name it -- all offer better quality produce and meat. And in my experience all have better overall customer service. At my last visit to Safeway the cashier held up the line as she and a customer chatted about the possibility that one day there would be a nickel charge for paper bags. Interesting back-and-forth discussion, but I was in somewhat of a rush and would have preferred more cashiers at the registers or a faster line. One thing I do like about this Safeway store is that it's a BottleDrop Plus redemption center, and at the customer service counter you can buy new BottleDrop bags and stickers. The area around the BottleDrop station outside is a real mess, however, with the usual cluster of hopefuls and their shopping carts full of cans gathered around a pair of bottle-deposit machines, at least one of which is already full or broken. Appalling! Went in to do a return and the customer representative said "why?" And then said I had to go to checkout do the return - I asked what's with the attitude and she said " that who I am and you just have to deal with it" - this is the type of customer service at Safeway - it's gross and insanely unprofessional. I'm usually very happy with my Safeway store but the last few times have been disappointing. I try and take advantage of their $5 Friday deals and hit the store first thing in the morning to get the deals,only the last three times there were no deals. Advertised specials were out of stock even before the ads came out and this trip the specials weren't even signed or marked. I understand there have been shipment issues and shortages of product everywhere that means logistics and merchandiser need to do more inventory control so shoppers aren't wasting time and leaving empty handed. read more

This safeway is more concerned with making the customer coming in and leaving through one side of the market. Went in at 9pm and what appeared to be the main glass door entrance was locked on both sides of it with a large "USE OTHER ENTRANCE." From what it appears is that they were understaffed and they didn't want people going through doors that can't be monitored. I guess it must be a sketchy area? There were some sketchy people at the market as well. I would recommend going to another supermarket who appreciates their customers and care about making an experience instead of focusing on product retention. Quite disappointing considering in Washington near Kirkland you get top notch customer service. Hope the store manager sees this and does something to change the appearance. First time visit and this was my impression. The store on a positive note was clean and well lit. Seemed pretty stocked up. Parking lot lights were dimmer which is unsafe. read more

On 10-31 I bought one 2- pound loaf of Tillamook cheddar . The store charge me $13.99 . The shelf price was $10.99 . I saw it was on sale for $6.50 . But I did not see that you have to buy 2 loaf ! Why does safeway do that ? I took back the loaf the next day for a refund ! Went to Fred Meyers a few weeks later and paid $ 6.99 for one loaf ! This is not the first time a store over charge me ! If you enjoy having your groceries thrown around and having your cashier give you attitude while moving as slow as a turtle, this might be the place for you! Came on a slow night and the older, heavier set, flamboyant cashier made the shopping experience the worst I think I've ever encountered at a grocery store. Literally throwing our stuff around and huffing and puffing because he had to walk around to scan something on the cart. I get everyones gotta pay their bills but if walking 2 feet to scan something makes you THAT mad that you have to throw things around to show how annoyed you are, maybe get a different job rather than ruining everyone else's day. Unlike employees at those other stores, the ones here are usually talking about their breaks and schedules. The rare samples here are weak and usually a pass. The managers, those in the meat/seafood, and the Checkers are great. Unfortunately, the deli crew look over-worked, and as a result, give stoic to poor service. THIEVES. I was about to fly home for my mom's open heart surgery and stopped in to buy a bottle of water & get cash back so I'd have cash on hand during my travels. The cashier was having issues with the chip reader so reset my purchase and swiped again. He never gave me my cash back or my receipt. I was rushing to make my flight, so I left quickly and then realized when I got to the airport that he had not given me the money. When I came back after my mom's surgery I went to speak to the manager and they refused to give me my money. I was able to name the cashier and exact date and time but still nothing. This is my local Safeway where I am well known, shop on a daily basis, and thought I wasn't valued as a regular customer. The store closes at Midnight. I arrived at or before 11:55 and was told that despite all information to the contrary, the store was closed. I challenged that and was thrown to the ground by Safeway security. I am 74. The store manager, who knows me quite well, came to the door and did not stand up for me. If the security force, whose employer knows me well, thinks this is the place to practice the techniques they were taught to wage war in Iraq, I think they need to find another calling. Sooo much better than the Safeway on Broadway. We have stopped going to Broadway and drive out of our way to go to this Safeway. Everything is so much better. More meat selection, better quality of vegetables, newer layout and wider selection. They don't seem to have the pan handlers like the other Safeway where they were getting very pushy. Overall just a more pleasant experience shopping and we end up with much better food (comparing to the Broadway Safeway). Oh and they have a flat driveway so you don't see people allowing the carts to roll downhill into someone else's car. (really this happened on Broadway and the person didn't care) read more

The pick-up order system is terrible. They don't tell you ahead of time what is being substituted, nor if something is missing. They need to bring out the receipt and discuss the changes with you before you leave. The employee was nice, but the process was bad. They even delayed my order. Waited a bit for them to come out as well. Will not use this feature until it's fixed. read more

I just moved from out of state and must have a sign floating over my head that says, "please be a jerk to me, I'm new" because the butcher/fish department acted like my need of assistance to find where an item was located was very bothersome and beneath their duties in "customer service". I am not a usual Safeway shopper. However, after Cully Albertsons told me that they would not rent a.rug doctor until.1030, when customer service opens. In desperation I went to Safeway on Sandy Blvd. They said 9am. The nice woman saw the look in my eyes and found a manager. I was leaving 5 minutes later with a rug doctor. Customer service means you find ways to help those that ultimately fund your pay check. Albertsons on Cully failed miserably! Safeway on Sandy Blvd has won my repeat business. Your basic Third World Safeway but at least you can buy ice cream in the third world, not here. The ice cream freezer quite often has lights that are out but more importantly, the ice cream is kept at 32 to 33 degrees! If you really need to buy ice cream from here, you will need to either strap your freezer to the top of your car or eat it at the check stand after paying because it WILL NOT survive the trip home. You could also easily buy ice cream that has melted and refrozen and we all know how horrible that is. I complained months ago and I was told they were getting a new freezer. Apparently that was a lie. Also they have 2 machines for bottle deposits. 75 percent of the time 1 machine is out and usually the one that is working requires constant supervision from employees who have other duties. This is a neighborhood Safeway, with a south and north approach from the surrounding neighborhood. On the North side, in order to reach Safeway if you walk, you will need to transverse through the smelly bottle return area. Homeless people scattered about going through their bounty of cans. About half of these people are normal decent people, the other half drunks or mental patients. If you walk to the Safeway using the South approach, you will walk past a group of Safeway employees and their plume of tobacco smoke. This has been my local grocery store for the past 15 years. They are practically family! See them at least once a week and they are always doing the better for their customers. I saw someone called this Safeway a 3rd world. Wow! Rude. This store as of lately has been even MORE AMAZING! They have really helped families get in and out and what they need during this crisis.
