This is my (reluctantly so) neighborhood grocery. I visit as it's in walking distance, the mobile app provides enough discounts to warrant the bleak, sometimes unsafe atmosphere, & they carry a moderately acceptable amount of vegan products in addition to the standard produce/fruit section. I rarely buy things that aren't on sale as their prices are higher than places with higher quality (Trader Joe's, most notably for me), however the weekly ads again usually tempt me with at least a few products. I am grateful to have at least one grocery nearby for when the weather is less than spectacular (oh winter, you suck!). If Safeway would carry more vegan brands/products & not price gouge for carrying them, I'd be inclined to visit more often. read more

There is a great staff of very helpful people here. The deli folks went out of their way to help me multiple times. There is a whole section of heavily stolen stuff which you have to purchase in it which is a tad frustrating but they had the friendliest and most helpful person there. I was a bit surprised as to how pleasant it was to shop here. Expecting the worst and getting a much more pleasant experience is so nice. read more

This Safeway is crazy. I used to live in the area and this was my main grocery, now I only stop in if it's convenient and I have no other choice. You routinely see people with their bikes in this store, also people with their dogs/cats/parrots (seriously). The small parking lot is split into upper and lower sloped sections, both feel hazardous with people speeding around corners and other people loitering. I think the staff tries their best and they have security, but I'm not sure it's enough to make up for the area and the strange people that pass through. Food is standard for Safeways/Albertsons: okay but not great quality, decent selection but not extensive, and pricey but not the most expensive. read more

The flowers ordered were not what I got and more importantly they were wilted and nearly dead. See the pictures of what was ordered and what I got. Flowers were ordered from flowers.com which then contracts with local florist. The local florist contracted was the Safeway floral department and these wilted flowers were delivered to me on my Birthday. I also received a bunch of flowers from the Safeway on King Road in Milwaukee and they are stunning and beautiful please see my review for that Safeway to see the comparison of what a good bouquet of fresh flowers looks like. This review is actually for the Starbucks in this Safeway. The Safeway it's self was just a normal Safeway and my cashier was very nice. The Starbucks however. I walked up there's already one lady waiting inline 1 worker is making drinks while 2 other workers stand there talking. I wait, and wait, no one greets us then the 3rd workers goes over to join the conversation, still no one greets us or takes purr order. Then a man walks up behind me and we all wait, and wait... He checks his watch and at that point I just leave. Customer service in general in the service industry is total trash now a days but this was over the top rude, ridiculous, terrible customer service. If you don't want to work then don't but don't show up put your apron on just to stand there and ignore customers! read more

While we were staying in Portland, I dropped by this location to pick up some food on the healthier end of the scale for the AirBnb fridge. I loved that this location seemed to have a few brands I hadn't seen in a Safeway before (I'm from California) so it was awesome to buy a few lentils and rice mixes that were handheld size that we could pack into our carryons. This Safeway location also carries Mauna Loa ice cream (and nut based ice creams have lately become my jam) as well as the fresh bananas, honeycrisp apples, carrots sticks, and hummus that tend to round out the snacking foods I like to keep around. They also have a Starbucks within this location that carried coconut milk in stock, so I nabbed a drink on my way out of the store. The service was friendly and helpful and they also have self check out, so we will definitely be back! read more

Even compared to other Safeways, this one is bleak. It's an obstacle course to even get in the front door. The below ground garage is truly scary. The selection is poor and the produce subpar. It's clean enough inside but the immediate outside area is a mess. It's oddly hard to find what you need even though Safeways are by and large standardized. read more

This Safeway is located on NE Broadway in an area that over the years has become a haven for street people. Walking in and out you routinely get accosted for money. Don't even try to process your recycles here. Once inside, the store is ok. I stop in when I need just a few items because it's on my way home from the gym. Or when they are having a good sale. Herein is the problem. Rarely does the sales price actually ring up even if I put in my loyalty number. I've even downloaded their ad and use their cumbersome "click" system to add digital sales to my account. Still they don't show up in receipt and I have to walk over to customer service to get reimbursed. Finally, after years of this wash, rinse, repeat problem, the customer service rep told me that after clicking to get the discount, you have to take a second step and move the clicked item to your list in order to get the discount. What? Why would you lore customers in with sales then make it so difficult to get the price? It's way too much effort. The produce is overpriced. The cut up fruit is decent. I appreciate their sales on wine. Other than that, I go to Freddie's down the street. read more

The problem with saving a draft on Yelp is if you let it sit there from 2017 to 2022 and you return... there is no way to peek at the business to make sure you are reviewing the right place. Since 2017 and even before I have shopped Safeway's in Hawaii, Oregon, Washington... maybe a few other states as well. So, now I am forced to write AT LEAST 85 characters or words or something as specified by Yelp, and post it. THEN and only THEN can I see which particular business I gave a star rating to and let sit in my drafts. So, if you are reading this, sorry all I know is I had a 4-star experienced with no clue as to why it wasn't 5-star. Perhaps after I look at the location, the memories will return and I will delete all this. We are not from the area and literally knew nothing about this store. We just looked on google for stores that were not too far from our hotel. This safeway was around 1 mile from the hotel and also not too far from a whole foods. So we opted to go to this one to get some dinner and snacks and breakfast food. Street parking seems to be fairly scarce around here. We pulled into the parking garage and parked. Walked to the elevator and we were super surprised when we got to the bottom floor and the elevator opened right into the store! That was pretty cool. The store was a typical safeway and we found everything we were looking for. The staff was friendly and the store was easy to navigate. Safeway is the same as it's always been, the store is clean and the employees are friendly. I came in here looking for my daughters formula and I'm so glad that they actually had it. I ended up getting some of my favorite donuts as well. Happy baby, happy mommy. There was some congestion at the check out as the employee hit the wrong payment method a couple of times and I didn't appreciate how he threw my milk in the bag at all. But, my opinion of this place over a couple decades won't change because of one small shaky experience. read more

I found the produce section a little weird. I'm not entirely certain, it may be supply chain issues. The stores in the little on the skimpy side. People seemed receptive enough as far as employees until I got to my cashier. She seemed confused that I wanted my ice cream in a separate bag. Yes, I know that means two bags please just do it? Then, as I was holding up my hand for the receipt even though I saw her eyes look at my hand, she still struggling to shove the receipt into the bag ignoring my hand. Way to go, That's very passive aggressive of you. I walked right past the security guards packed my ice cream into my second bag and couldn't really leave fast enough. Well, I tried to send this directly to Safeway instead of going on Yelp but since their Contact Us form is broken I will leave this here. I recently stopped by the location on 1100 NE Broadway and picked up some fruit from the organic section. There were a few moldy items there, which should have been my first clue, but I went against my better judgement and made my purchase from the non-moldy items anyway. After eating this produce, my husband and I have both come down with what appears to be norovirus, and this was the only store we visited out of the ordinary last week. I would advise against purchasing any fresh produce here. read more

Poor selection, but that's not my main gripe. This store is obsessed with security. Terrible atmosphere. All the sundries--hair products, soap, TP, etc--are in this labyrinthine section that has only one way in/out. Anything from that section you have to buy right there. On top of that, the wheels on the carts lock if you try and LEAVE THE DAMN STORE. An alarm goes off and a poor employee has to come and manually shut off the damn electronic lock. 0/5 because I don't appreciate being treated like a criminal just for shopping your mediocre selection. read more

Absolutely terrible service! I made a small purchase then needed to use the loo. I asked the girl at the Starbucks counter if a restroom was in the store and for its location. The girl was extremely rude and stated, "you'll have to go to customer service or a cashier to get a code." What?!! I am a grown adult! MUCH better than Ainsworth/MLK store. Also better than St John's store. Plenty of parking, well stocked (even on sale items). Friendly cashiers and the lines move pretty fast. Sure wish they would control all the drunks, transients and panhandlers outside. They're very aggressive and will practically get between customers and the doors. I've even seen a few tail behind customers who were walking to their cars. Management really needs to control it better! Some of the carts are dirty/sticky gross. But a couple sanitizer wipes across the handlebar makes me feel a LITTLE better. read more

Avoid this Overpriced Racist Place Like a Plague ! I work nearby in a professional environment. I always try to eat healthy, but don't always have time to pack lunch, so I do my best to pick up a premade salad for my quick lunch. Not sure why, but I always manage to get "randomly" stopped here by their security guard. I'm pretty sure it's because of my race and ethnicity. I was stopped and told not to go anywhere and threatened to have the police called on me by Security until he confirmed that I really paid $5 for my salad. The head store Manager did not really care to apologize for the guards behavior after it turned out that he was wrong. I appreciate how the entire staff has rallied lately to face this situation we're in right now. I specifically want to acknowledge one cashier in particular.. Siva. She's always been adept and sweet. But in the midst of this chaos I have seen her be particularly calm and particularly kind, going out of her way to engage ppl in meaningful convo in the short time she has with them. This has to be one of the worst all time Safeways. Let's start with the pharmacy which is its own special brand of hell. Your prescription can be the easiest thing in the world and somehow filling them and picking them up feels like a labor of Hercules. Budget an extra hour to want to die while you wait in line, even if you call ahead. If I was this slow and bad at my job I would not have one. The store itself is filled with fluorescent lighting, rude people, and a lack of signage or baskets. Do yourself a favor and go anywhere else. read more

The bakery staff have been rude to me more than once, there is usually only one checker on duty, and there is no way you can just "run in" for "something quick". They do emphasize their store brand over well known quality products to the extent you don't see many alternative brands anymore, e.g. Flavorpk vegetables, and others. They offer delivery service which is quite convenient however with instacart, their fees are quite high. Here is the fees for a $170.59 order. Order Total Items Subtotal $170.59 Delivery Fee $5.99 Tip $8.53 Service $8.53 Bottle Deposit $0.10 Total $193.74 Note besides a delivery fee, I'm also charged a service fee and a tip fee. making my total order $23 more than it was originally. read more

First off I don't think I would shop here at night and be careful where you park. Someone else wrote about the panhandlers but there do seem to be a lot of loitering homeless looking people here and down in that underground parking is smells like piss. We only park upstairs now, we'll see what happens when the rain comes. But also you may want to park far out. We watched one lady just let her cart roll into the car next to her and left it there as she got out her groceries. It doesn't help that it's a slopped lot but please show some common courtesy. But when you look at her car you can see she wouldn't notice if someone did that to her car. Okay now the store. The have decent displays of fruits and veggies and we do like they have the pre-sliced deli meats. It is a hit or miss on the quality of the deli meats sometimes. Warning! Be careful of ordering a sandwich. My husband got one last weekend and the bread he picked (it was unusual) looked really good but it was solid as a rock. If he had bitten into it he would have chipped a tooth. Now couldn't the person making the sandwich notice that!?!? We will keep shopping here because I just love Safeway black forest ham and for staples they are the best price around. The most hood and ratchet store in the planet . The only Safeway in town practically without a self checkout . Don't come here if you're in a hurry or if you care about your time at all. A lot of the items are expired and old - I found out from an old employee they keep things on shelves as much as legally possible and put the older stuff in the front of the stock , so grab things from the back. They also bait and switch their "sales" a lot so watch out for that. This store makes me depressed and question life. Just don't go here for real.. it's over populated as it is!!! read more

Every Portland, Oregon Safeway I have been to, and Albertson's also, has the most incompetent and insolent deli staff of any grocery deli I have visted in the entire country. The store on NE Broadway between 10th & 11th is no different. The company seems to hire a lot of people who suffer from developmental disabilities and anger management issues, in order to get the kickback on their wages from the federal government. I am all for everyone being able to work if they want to and earn a wage, and I also have no problem with the government reimbursing the company for those wages. However, the people should be properly trained. I have had cheese sliced paper thin, even tho I told the person what to set the slicer on. This woman proceeded to become angry and tell me it couldn't be changed. Many of the staff will also wad up sliced Havarti, which is expensive, and mash it all together in a ball. Today, I saw a new man there. I smiled with high hopes as he ignored me. He walked to the hot bar and served the people who came up after me instead of serving me. As he served them, more people lined up for the hot bar. He looked at me a few times. A guy came from the back to tell me that the other guy would wait on me. By the time he got to the fourth person who was there after me, he yelled down at me to say the line formed at the hot bar. By that time there were 5 more people waiting. I walked away. I used to work at a deli, and when you come out from the back or look up from a task, you turn your head and scan the entire length of the cases, the hot bar, the cold side, all of it. It seems the workers at this Safeway have not been instructed on how to turn their heads from side to side. If it is protocol to have people wanting sliced cheese to go to the opposite end of the deli to wait, there should be a sign to that effect. This happens a lot at this location, and it is always the people with DD doing it. One day, the short middle aged woman who works there was so bad I had to wait in line to complain about her to the store manager. It was ridiculous. He said there is a big turn over and I would be seeing new faces. I explained how I have seen this woman's coworkers, the nice hard working young men who seem to come and go from there, holler for her to help only to have her refuse and go bend over and clean a spill with a paper towel that is in the back while 8 people were waiting at the cases. The woman in front of me had similar tales about this horrible deli employee, and all of us told him he should fire her. She is still there. She has no idea how to provide customer service, and anyone who manages to get hired there who is any good is gone within a few weeks. Safeway has a problem, they don't properly train their deli staff. Every Safeway in Portland I have went to, Hawthorne, Sandy, the Albertson's on Cully, the NE Broadway location, has extremely rude and inept deli staff who never seem to get fired. All the other workers come and go but the bottom of the barrel somehow keep their job. No self checkout and the workers are slow. Customer service was irritated and unprofessional when I asked for the bathroom code. I overheard her complaining to another customer about me when I came back from the restroom. She was upset that there was a lot of people trying to buy things at customer service because the workers at the checkout. There were about 5 customers crammed in front of her in a small space and she just kind of displayed her irritation quite openly. read more

Lots of anecdotes. This one is about soda pop. Safeway itself is gouging prices. The 12-pk that used to be $5.89 (and still is at Fred Meyer etc) is now $8.09. And I guess there was a run on it. None at Fred Meyer. So I ordered THRU INSTACART at Safeway. They were having a sale: Buy 2, get 3 free. Safeway is pretty bad about putting sale prices into the computer. So I ordered 5 pk with the instructions :SHOULD BE BUY 2, GET 3 FREE. IF SALE PRICE DOESN'T COME UP DO NOT BUY." But of course the shopper did. 5 pks at $8.09. I've now been wrangling with Instacart for 5 days. But they managed to not retain any instructions. So they won their excess $24.27. read more

This review is regarding the Safeway Grocery Delivery service, which, as I understand comes out of this store. I have used the service a handful of times. I have never been completely satisfied but as I am unable to physically get groceries myself, I continued to use them. Until today. My order arrived with 14 items missing and 2 produce items growing mold on them - overall, a total of $84.40 of undelivered or rotten goods charged to my credit card. I waited for 23 minutes on hold to even get a hold of anyone on their support line. The man begrudgingly refunded me the amount to my card but only after trying to simply give me store credit. Why would I need store credit? I am never using this service again. Appalling. read more
