UNRELIABLE DELIVERY SERVICE....LYING CUSTOMER SERVICE SUPPORT.... UNRESPONSIVE MANAGEMENT After 10 years as a Safeway customer I am finally through with their delivery service. On May 3, I placed a delivery order. As usual the delivery window is four hours. On line I noted the order was picked up and out for delivery. Nearly four hours later (still within the four-hour window) I receive an email from a Doordash driver asking me to go to the lobby of my building to carry my groceries to my sixth-floor apartment. I said no. The service is supposed to take my groceries to my door. He says he does not have a cart and cannot carry the groceries to the elevator and to my apartment. I tell him I just had surgery and cannot lift more than 10 pounds. A few minutes later I get a phone call from a Doordash supervisor asking if I can pick up my groceries at the lobby. I repeat I cannot. Ten minutes later the groceries are at my door. However I discover the meats are warm and the frozen fish is dripping through the butcher paper. Apparently my groceries had been riding around in an unrefrigerated car for four hours driven by a Doordash driver and not the usual refrigerated Safeway delivery truck. I call customer service and explain I must throw the meat products out. I am not about to risk eating spoiled meat after having had open heart surgery. I receive a refund for the meats. I should have also asked for a refund for the dairy products. I also threw those away. On May 17 I place another delivery order. This time the order was not delivered within the four hour window. After four and a half hours I called to cancel the order and to receive a refund. The customer service rep puts me on hold to get a supervisor approval. The order is cancelled and I am given a Reference number for the transaction. Ten minutes later I receive an email from the driver saying my order is being delivered in another ten minutes. I text the order is cancelled. I received a text saying the order cannot be cancelled. I call customer service again and am told I cannot cancel the order. I say I have already cancelled the order and provide the reference number. I am put on hold and then told I need to call the store manager to cancel the order. I say I am not calling the store manager, I have already cancelled the order. The rep then puts me on hold, then informs me he called the store manager and that the order cannot be cancelled. Again I say the order has already been cancelled. He tells me to accept the order and that I will still be refunded the full amount. At this point I ask for a $10 credit for the inconvenience and the late delivery. Again I am put on hold. The rep gives me a reference number for the credit and tells me I will receive the full refund within ten days. After 10 days I have not received the refund. I call customer service and provide both reference numbers for the refund and for the $10 credit. I am now told the issue is "escalated". After insisting to speak with a supervisor and being put on hold again I am told I will receive the refund that day. Of course I have not received a refund or a credit. When I call back I insist on getting the email address for Mike Withers, the vice president for western operations. No one is able to provide that information but I do finally get to speak with a supervisor named Emil (no one provides last names) who tells me the order was delivered and that I would not receive a refund. When I insist I was told I would get a full refund and a credit and provide the reference numbers the supervisor cannot explain why I have been lied to. The supervisor tells me the store manager will call me. Of course, I have never heard from the store manager. Safeway delivery service is unreliable. When they fail to meet their obligation customer service reps lie about providing refunds and credits and issue meaningless reference numbers. And to top in all off everyone refuses to provide contact information for executive management so they might learn of the lousy service. read more

Safeway is the only store in the Portland area that divides foods up by racially-offensive categories. As of today, they actually have aisles called "Hispanic Food" and "Asian Food". If they're going to do that, then why not "African Food", "Australian Food", or "European Food"?...Because that would be absurd and unnecessary, of course! Why in the hell would a store divide food by continent, since foods are common across all continents? This is extremely racist. As an example, they have canned corn in one aisle, and hominy (which is also canned corn in a different form and a very common ingredient in foods prepared in Africa) in the 'Hispanic foods' aisle. 12-06-2025 (6:10 p.m.) Never have I ever been treated so poorly. After finishing my shift at work I wanted to grab some Pokemon cards to rip. I had bought 2 waves of things from the vending machine when I hear the employee from the cigarette/baby formula section come over say "No, no, no, no, no, your done I saw you tampering with the machine". Utterly surprised I thought they were joking, the employee then threatened me with security then being banned from that Safeway then stated they were going to call the cops. After I TRIED to tell this worker that tapping the green button on the card reader wasn't TAMPERING with the machine, she then proceeded to say that I was loitering (been there only since I had touched the machine not even 6 minuets). This is not okay Safeway, this wrong needs to be right. read more

There's never no long line at the register (heaven forbid they open a second one) and an even longer line at self-checkout (where at least two registers are always out of order. The staff are always flustered and impatient. The food quality is ... fine, just fine. But the experience of trying to shop here is just miserable. On top of that you're always accosted by people near the entrance and it's an unpleasant atmosphere all around. read more

I like this Safeway as it's usually not too crowded and pretty clean. They always have great deals on their meats. However, the last time I shopped here I felt I was followed around the store by employees. I'm not positive but from the moment I picked up my first item there was always an employee within about ten to 15 feet of me throughout my shopping experience. This is the best Safeway in Portland. Maybe I'm biased because I've had so many bad experiences at other Safeway. I lived in NE and shopped at the NE Broadway location for 18 years. Stepping over street people to get in, being followed and accosted. When I moved across the River to SW, I tried going to the "UnSafeway on SW Jefferson" because it's close, but every experience was so bad and scary that I just can't go there. So the bar for me & Safeway is pretty low. A friend recommended the SE Hawthorne location since it's a quick drive over the Hawthorne Bridged and it was recently renovated. Wow, I am thrilled to have found this place. There are times when you need the large chain grocery stores, especially during the current Pandemic when I shop in bulk every 10-14 days. I'm always going to go to Trader Joes, Sheridan's and some specialty shops, but sometimes you need to do a bulk shopping that goes beyond food items. At this Safeway, there is a huge underground parking with escalators, which i prefer because I feel safer than in an elevators. The store is clean, spacious, well organized and well stocked. Except for the "usual suspects" like toilet paper, hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes, they had everything. As I entered, a gentleman was wiping down the carts and baskets. There was a station with extra wipes so I did a double clean before venturing around the store, quickly. They have a Starbucks in the corner but no time to stop! At the deli I picked up some nice medium rare roast beef for sandwiches, sliced provolone and some great rustic sourdough bread. For more protein, I selected chicken breasts which were already thinly sliced, perfect for the chicken piccata and chicken parm I plan on making. At $2.49 a pound, it was a bargain. Stocked up on fresh fruit and veggies; all looked in good condition. Grabbed some pasta, the Signature brand at 4 for $5, and some condiments. Quick run down baking aisle for brown sugar and dark chocolate chips for the mandatory quarantine baking we all seem to be doing! When I went to pick up eggs, I noticed the Lucerne shredded cheese was on sale for just $1.50 for an 8oz bag so I picked up several, Italian blend and cheddar. Grabbed two bottles of laundry detergent, half price, and was good to go. The young lady that checked my groceries was super friendly, let me bag my own items and made sure all of the sale prices and coupons rang up. I was in and out in 15 minutes and the ride from my house is about 7 minutes. Definitely happy to find another store close by where I can get the bulk of my shopping done. I understand this location recently went through a remodel and it shows. I felt safe in my surroundings, the store was clean, food was fresh, and the staff is friendly and helpful. This is my neighborhood Safeway and I come here all the time! I've always had a great experience here and found everything I need. The staff is always helpful! One time I accidentally dropped a shake here and I was so embarrassed but the staff immediately came over and cleaned everything up and was very kind. Recently they've been having a great sale on kombucha- 4/$10, can't beat that deal! It's not a huge location but they have everything you need an always a great clearance section. read more

I popped into this Safeway in search of Zyrtec d, after being told by the pharmacy that they didn't have it in stock I turned around. I went back to the entrance I came in, when I realized there were security gates at every door and register. I walked the full length of the store front. After seeing a sign that said self checkout and store exit I headed that way. After also seeing a gate at that exit I turned to a manager I'm assuming and asked "how do I leave this store" he looked at me like I was stupid and rudely directed me towards the gate at the end of self check. I said " I didn't buy anything, I don't have a receipt so I didn't think I could get out and there's gates pretty much everywhere" he the proceeded to turn his back and walk away from me while saying " well they're working so you're going to have to get used to it. They will be everywhere" this attitude was not necessary and incredibly rude. I am a paying customer, I'm not stealing anything and you have made it insanely hard to leave your store. Don't lecture me about stealing prevention working when I haven't don't anything wrong. This is my neighbor hood grocery store but I will not be returning to this location. I don't always Yelp chain grocery stores (gotta draw the line somewhere), but I went to this Safeway during a weekend trip to Portland and was struck by how nice it was, given the mostly negative reviews. Matt B. and I went with Mike K. and Gino G. to pick up a bottle of wine to drink while doing face masks and watching Drag Race in our hotel room--the perfect end to any night. Safeway wasn't our first choice. We'd been hoping to hit a cute wine shop or liquor store--surely, we thought, Portland must be teeming with these--but everything seemed to be closed after 9:30 on a Sunday. We saw there was a Safeway on our way and stopped in thinking we'd grab whatever and go. This is exactly what we did--we were there for ten minutes tops--but I was still struck by the pleasantness of our Safeway shopping experience. Parking was super easy, and the store was clean and well organized, even affirmatively appealing. We headed straight for the wine aisle and found a huge selection of bottles, many of them local or regional. We picked up an Oregon cab Mike had been curious about for $33. Check-out was quick and easy, even with all four of us olds getting carded. I don't shop at this Safeway regularly, and I'm sure it's earned its 2.5-star rating, but if you're just looking to bop in for a bottle of wine, it should serve you well. We had a great night drinking wine out of our bathroom glasses, sipping carefully through our face masks. This would've been much harder to make happen if Safeway weren't open. read more

Don't shop this store. The price for an ice cream carton is $7.49 !! One reason for that is that the store Is overrun with theft. Almost every time myself or my tenants go in there, there is someone stealing stuff, sometimes huge amounts of stuff, and walking out the front door or the back door. The store does nothing to stop them. Because of this, they come back again and again for more. They are being hit many many times a day, all day long. And the store simply adds the losses onto the prices. If this keeps up, they'll probably just close the store and we need it in our close-in neighborhood. It is shocking what goes on. And yet they do nothing to monitor the exits in any way. Even if the store wants to blame the city, they still do nothing to curb this. These people actually feel entitled to just help themselves to whatever they want. They go for the expensive stuff, leaving me to carefully shop the sales, coupons, private labels, etc.. This is a really clean Safeway! This location was super close to our AirBnB, so we walked over to do some preliminary grocery shopping for a hiking trip we had planned the day after. They are very well stocked with all the necessities and everything is super easy to find and organized. Bathrooms are clean, parking is convenient, and staff is pretty friendly. Enough time has gone by they should be well seasoned at it (pun intended). So could anyone on this planet within Safeway/Albertsons system explain how they charge your groceries (plus all the fees), and lose the order, yet the order is in the refrigerator, but they can't deliver it because they are either short on trucks, or the 3rd party door dashers aren't competent. This has been by neighborhood Safeway for about 10-years, and for the 8-years before COVID and the two years since, there has been a dedicated core of staff at this Safeway who make it feel more like a neighborhood market than one of many in a chain. In fact, the staff are so friendly, patient, helpful, and great that every holiday I make point of getting the three our four "All Stars" and saying thank you. To give you an idea of how gracious one of the folks I adore is, Erica was so shocked at the simple thanks that she wanted to use the card to buy me coffee. These folks have worked long and committed hours at an incredibly tough time--and while I certainly sympathize with the very difficult social situation that many of the 'tougher' customers that frequent this location face...I also recognize how hard it must be on the staff to keep constant vigilance against shoplifters, known shoplifters, and blatant shoplifters...on more than one occasion I've witnessed the respectful way they approach certain challenging guests, explaining: I'm sorry, you're going to need to pay for that..." while always allowing the person being confronted to reconsider what they're trying to do with dignity. To do this day in and day out without losing it...is special. Remember, this is a big supermarket, a part of an enormous chain, and I can only imagine the ever changing corporate mandate these folks ALSO have to adhere to...if it is a nightmare...you'd never know it from the people who work here. The staff don't pick what the shelves are going to be stocked with--but they make sure the shelves are stocked, faced, and always looking sharp. Even the employees who get randomly thrust into the role of Barista at the in-store Starbucks have adopted a certain esprit de corps at this Safeway that I've experienced at none other. Go in and even if you're just buying a pack of gum, ask the checker how she or he is doing...or ask them to help you find the gum...or just smile and tell them thank you. First because they deserve it...second, because the smile they'll give you back...is alone worth the drive. read more

The banks and banks of ancient fluorescent light fixtures on the curved ceiling hark back to my preschool days in Idaho Falls, when my mom took me shopping at an identical Safeway on the Yellowstone Hwy (but is now a Jo-Anne's Fabric). And the ceiling tiles are nostalgic for me too, since they are the same ones we had in our rumpus room in the Idaho Falls house. So I hope they never update the interior here. If I want to shop at an updated Safeway, I can just go to the one at 39th and Powell, across the street from the swinger's club. A plus at Hawthorne Safeway is parking. There is always plenty . Never again will I spend one penny at Safeway. They are overpriced and when I was checking out the self-aware passive aggressive female clerk ar the register told me that two of the doughnuts within the dozen purchased were pastries and charged me and additional $2.98. The clerk instead of removing the alleged pastries made a bag girl go get two more doughnuts that she carried in hand uncovered. There was chocolate all over a bag underneath. Nothing on the doughnut case said what we bought were pastries. That is an unlawful trade practice under the Oregon UTPA and is something cousin to accusing me of shoplifting. The cashier working the self checkout was so rude to me when I visited today. I had clearly just made a purchase right in front of him. I asked if the store had a bathroom I could use. He sighEd as if really annoyed and said yes, then showed me a code written on paper. I said I had a hard time remembering codes and went to take a photo and he stopped me saying "we don't like people doing that, and the code changes tomorrow". I told him to forget it if it was such a problem. I hate to think how this affects elderly customers or people with medical issues who need immediate access to restrooms. Safeway is such a funny place. Their store generally carries brands and products that I don't use, however, they are a block away and it's convenient to go there for toilet paper, organic stuff, beer, wine and occasionally some kind of mediocre breakfast cake for a work event. I use my club card for the discounts and it must generate such a funny shopper profile for those marketers analyzing my shopping data. I'm sure they're judging the amount of beer and wine I buy. I'm also holding a grudge about Safeway, too, from the summer before last when they were building this new enhanced "Lifestyle" format. The construction was so annoying, literally doomsday death machines vibrated my windows all day long. It was such an obnoxious project and it seemed to take forever. The construction people would park their stupid vehicles by my apartment because they ran out of room in that entire block they were capitalizing on--not to mention having a block of SE 27th closed for an uncalled for amount of time. When the project was completed, this behemoth additional 20,000 square feet space of a grocery mecca literally blocked the sun from shining on my apartment. It's not like they use all that space. There's just stupidly high ceilings and empty guard tower looking things. I would have given this store only one star, but the reason I gave two is what keeps me coming back: the staff. Erika for one is awesome! There's the clerks that work the self-check out spaces and they're all great. The Starbucks guy is nice too, the manager is always friendly and i don't hear any of the supervisors treating the staff badly. Everyone smiles and I feel that over the years I've been in this neighborhood I'm getting to know these people. To summarize, if you like processed, mainstream proctor gamble bovine growth hormone GMO stuff, this store would be a 4 or 5 star. Don't order delivery unless you like waiting all day and then not receiving your order. You can call Texas and spend your time trying to find out what is happening, but they won't know. The store itself acts as if they have nothing to do with the delivery end. When I called at 10 pm trying to trace the order, they had NO WAY of contacting the order. Is this a national store chain that took my money and wasted my time, or some 2 person operation working out of a closet in someone's house? But this newly remodeled...actually completely rebuilt...space falls short in ways that I find confusing, but only one of which will I go on about ad nauseum in this review: They will pay someone to individually label the ripe avocados with stickers that say "ripe," but when it comes time to check out, and you've forgotten your cloth hippie bags in your OTHER Volkswagen bus, they will give you paper bags without handles. For a store that lives on a popular public transit line (shout out to Bus #14), in a neighborhood that prides itself on biking, skateboarding, walking, skipping, and jumping everywhere, why would you offer handle-less paper bags? After spending millions of dollars to build your snazzy new parking garage (where there is always, always, (did I mention always?) ample parking), is the cost savings that worth it? Even knowing that people can bike, walk, skip, or jump mere blocks down the street to either Freddie's or New Seasons and get handled bags? I was having a terrible day today. Popped into Safeway on the way home ready to be annoyed by the experience based on the kind of day I've had. Erika R turned that around. The line was long, I'd overheard from some employees talking to each other that a few people had called out, plus it was "rush hour." Erika was sweet as pie, though, even though it was obvious that she'd had a long day. She made me laugh, she was warm and engaging and made me feel like much more than just an obstacle she had to get through to reach the end of the line. She actually made me feel like a friend she had known for years. She was patient and kind with me when I messed up the transaction by putting in my card too early. I've had the pleasure of going through her line once or twice before, but today she was really the highlight of my day. I'd also like to mention that the young gentleman with brown hair and glasses who works at this Safeway as well (Justin? Jared? Pretty sure it's a J name). He's always awesome. The 5 stars are for the employees only. The store itself is just your standard, run-of-the-mill Safeway. It doesn't have ANY cell reception though fyi. read more

Every time I go to a Safeway I swear I'll never go back. For many reasons, but overall that the place just seems to work against a shopper, from the incredibly limited counter hours (deli, seafood) to the super inconvenient savings card (I carry different bags and everytime I go to Safeway I've gotta get another stupid card to save two bucks on shiraz, or whatever. moving on.) But sometimes I work weird hours. And Safeway is (for Portland anyway) the grocery equivalent of Denny's: "hey, it's late." And so the other night, after leaving work post Fred Meyer hours, I stopped by this Safeway to pick up some aforementioned shiraz. And as I approached the automatic doors a (small) rat ran out. My 13 1/2 month old daughter has been fighting a fever and I needed to get Pedialyte in a pinch. When I arrived just a couple minutes past closing which I thought was 10:30pm I was turned away and told to check Walgreens which was closed too. Thanks for nothing, Fred Meyer! Lost a customer even if you're closer than Safeway where I went next. There were still customers checking out. It was an emergency and I needed just one thing right next to the registers.
