this Safeway location is one of my goto shopping destinations. The Deli does a good job cooking Chicken though I only buy it if served by the staff. Store is a decent size resulting in most items being stocked, it's clean / comfortable, has ample parking, as always use the mobile application to lock in special pricing, and to qualify for rewards. my reason for this update / posting. i was absentminded and left a large insulated shopping bag that I have been using for several years in a shopping cart. upon returning home I realized that the bag was not with me so called the store. The Safeway customer service person advised me that my bag, and contents were at the front desk, and I could come back to retrieve the bag and replace the perishable items which was done later that day. read more

I visit this store almost everyday. Before work, I come here for either a sandwich or chicken tenders. Sometimes donuts for my coworkers. I always order a coffee from Starbucks. My only issue is that sometimes I am waiting a long time to have a sandwich made. I get it, people are working in the back, but it would be nice if at least one employee is assisting customers. Other than that, I have no problems. I may have a conversation with the Starbucks employees, they're always friendly. I saw an odd situation last week. A young man walked out with a duffle bag full of items they took, not paying. The security guard was next to the entrance doors and did nothing. Just kept looking down at his phone. Then right after, a woman carrying a large bag did the exact same. Employees were talking to each other about both situations. Why is security there, if that's the case. Anyway, every time I visit the store, they always have what I need. And the employees are friendly to me. The store is relatively large and welcoming, the parking lot is large enough for the amount of people visiting. I recommend using the restroom at home or somewhere else. Every time I have gone in there, it's never clean. I sanitize my hands thoroughly when I walk out the restroom door. read more

Maybe someone tomorrow at support can help me understand where I went wrong tonight in picking up my order. I went to Safeway twice after work yesterday and failed to pick up my online order. It was for a 9-10 PM time slot. I show up at 9:30 PM thinking it would be ready, as it's on my way home. I park and go to check in only to find out that I had an email saying it wasn't ready at 8:45 PM. Ok, I guess it's my bad for not checking, but I was on my way home. I get home to San Francisco, find alternative plans for dinner, eat alternative dinner, then I noticed at 10:45 PM that I have an email saying that my order is ready. 9:50 PM. So I get into my car. I get there at 11:30 PM driving from San Francisco back to Daly City. Upon arrival I tried checking in the app, but it said my time expired to pick it up. This should've been my first inclination that something was wrong. I walk into the store, approach the only working employee in the store that I see, the cashier, and am promptly told that no, I can't pick up my order and I needed to pick it up by 10 o'clock. I tried to explain the situation, but I couldn't get through to him in a way that had any influence on changing the accusatory tone that exuded from him, the impression that all of this was somehow my fault. Seriously? 10 minutes to pick up my order is all that I get? I get home from Safeway for the second time without my order. It was literally impossible for me to pick this order up. My guess is that they probably will have canceled it by the time I can pick it up. Also, driving home to San Francisco and back, and then back to San Francisco empty handed was not great with the rise in fuel prices. I understand things go wrong and orders are late and I have no problem accommodating that. At the same time, why can't Safeway be accommodating to me? Okay since my last review focused on the hottie in the produce section which I'm sure no one gives a fuck about, plus he's kind of rude anyways so moving on. About the actual store IT SUCKS!!! THE staff are great and the customer service is satificatory. Then again, I have a low bar so keep that in mind. I don't demand my ass be kissed and the world revolve around me. So workers are great but I feel ROBBED every time I shop here. The theft that happens here on a daily basis is mind boggling, and the customers nor workers stop it. In fact they defend it! The theft sickens me. I mean charging $3.00 for a candy bar $10 for a box of cereal, and I never agreed to work for free but if I don't give them my labor for free, then they steal my time. Giving a discount on overpriced food would mean they profit LESS AND profit is the name of the game not fairness and being morally straight. So Safeway knows the system works in their favor and the people are dumb enough to demand that it does at their expense, so they just tell us we saved money and got a discount, when the discount price is still 700% more then what they paid for it. So there is no discount!! It's all trickery and people fall for it hook, line, and sinker. They are so predictable too. Remember thee excuse they gave for why they now charge for plastic bags? Supposedly they were only doing that during covid as a reason to save plastic so it can be put to use making medical equipment blah blah blah bullshit story!!!! Just another legalized theft tactic. I knew once they started charging for plastic bags THEY WOULD NEVER STOP CHARGING US FOR BAGS! DUH ANYONE WITH half a brain would have seen that was going to happen. Just like anyone with a brain knew they would eventually charge for paper bags too. Yet even I did not think they would be such Theives and so cheap as to charge 25cents for paper bags WITH NO HANDLES!!! It is absolutely insulting the way they openly proudly and with support from the public steal their customers money, their time, and even now their labor, and they do the same trick on their workers. This entire time, I had been buying salad in a box by the front entrance. Little did I know that they had these Taylor Farms salads in the back, near the vegetables section. These Taylor Farms salads are significantly better and more affordable. However, be sure to check the expiration date before purchasing. I once had a terrible experience when I bought a salad in a box and there was a small caterpillar inside. I prefer self-checkout to avoid dealing with cashiers. We've been shopping in-store here for the last few years, and in most ways it's fine - a better-than-average Safeway. But one really annoying thing here is the super loud music, with the occasional ads shouting at you to buy bread, or whatever. Today it was causing me extreme irritation, and I couldn't wait to get out of there. Why does this Safeway have to have their music so much louder than other Safeways? Can you please just turn it down a bit? I had to keep asking my husband to repeat what he was saying, because I couldn't hear him. Reflexively, I want to write that this is a typical Bay Area Safeway, but it's really not. Unlike practically every other supermarket I've ever visited, the restrooms aren't at the back of the store. Instead, they're immediately to the right as you enter. There's also a security guard and one-way entrance-only gates right there, so I'm assuming they moved the bathrooms in order to prevent people from hiding items in their clothes to shoplift. (It's a lot more difficult to do that when the bathrooms are physically separated from the rest of the store.) So the bathroom situation is interesting, but what truly sets this Safeway apart, and not in a positive way, is its pathetic cheese section. Look, I get it; even supermarkets must respond to their particular customers' wants and needs, and maybe Daly City residents buy less cheese per person than the typical Bay Area Safeway customer. But the entirety of this location's cheese selection fits on two sides of a small island display. In most Safeways, the cheese selection takes up at least ten feet of an entire wall, meaning this place has one-fifth the cheese of a regular store. Even tiny Safeways like the one on 7th Avenue in San Francisco have more cheese. The parking lot is annoying, but it's huge. Beware, though. You can only enter the store from the right-hand side (as you're facing the building from the parking lot), or at least this is the policy at night. It's always way more crowded than I think it will be, and I've come here at some odd times. The checkers here don't seem as friendly as your typical Safeway employee. Groceries cut the week... received 6 bags.... 2 bags of detergent - (correct, ) 2 bags of someone else's order , frozen items & dairy item's (WRONG) 2 bags of spinach, tomatoes & avocados (correct) MISSING: salmon, steak, romain lettuce, dill, mint, olive oil..... (WRONG) ROUGHLY $70 of order was not received!!!! I have had so many problems with Safeway orders that I stood outside my home, with the driver and went through the bags with him. We circled all missing items! Somehow...2 weeks later... still fighting with customer service on fraudulently charged items!!!!!!! Problem so bad, I had to place an order with Whole Food for sand kittens on same day... in order to have dinner. While waiting to be served hot food from behind the counter in the deli I witnessed at LEAST 4 different people walk up to the self serve hot wings island and grab them with their bare hands, eat some and throw the bones back in to the serving trays with the others. Another was a group of young people that just filled up a container (that you're supposed to have weighed and actually purchase) and feed himself while walking around the store and was empty handed a few minutes later when I saw them again. Another was just sifting through them with his bare hands and then eating as he stood there. The bones left on the floor. These were not street people or homeless, but just freeloading scumbags. Called management and I am also making a formal call into the health inspectors office, as well. This setup is just inviting people to have at it with no regard to anyone. Almost every time i place an online/delivery order, the employee shopping the order seems incompetent. IE: out of 4 different sizes of the same cereal, they send a chat of what substitution I would like if out of the size I chose. So, within one minute, I answer the biggest one available. Chat says "shopper has finished your shopping and signed off". Nothing. Just marks it out of stock and ignores my quick reply. It's like that often at this location. Their prices went up also. Now they're incompetent and same priced as everyone else. Save yourself frustration and pay doordash or instacart to shop and deliver. They actually stay on chat to update you as they go. read more

It was a clean Safeway store. We walked around most of the store just trying to figure out what we wanted to buy to eat for dinner. The deli area had a nice selection of foods. Different salads and hot cooked foods. Went to the back and checked out the fresh seafood, tried deciding on what fish to fry, but then thought about how much more work that would take when we just needed something quick. They have nice selection of seafoods as well. There was a lot of people in the self-checkout, but it was actually going pretty fast. Can't remember how many self-checkout registers they had but I believe it was about 5, so that was helpful. read more

I've been a customer for a few years at Westlake Safeway and A LOT has changed. The good thing about it is that it's a big store and can somewhat easily find items, despite some things are locked up. Some of the employees are very helpful and friendly, and some know their regular customers by name or face. The downside to it is that they recently put up the electronic exit gate to prevent thief. Does it really work? Maybe, maybe not. It's makes other customer feel uneasy now walking into that Safeway. It's like walking into an airport and TSA is waiting for you on the other side. It's a a good idea to have the gates up but it's going to drive customers away from that store. I've recently shopped at other Safeway and they aren't that extreme. Other Safeway doesn't even blink an eye on retail thief, or just care on with it. I suggest to other people to avoid Westlake Safeway and drive a mile or two to other Safeway such as Pacifica Safeway, Chestnut Safeway, Westborough Safeway, or any other one. What's with the security guard guy taking pictures of me in aisle 15? not once, but twice, I was in the beer and dairy section; all by myself in that aisle I might add! just doing my shopping and I see this wannabe security guard holding up his phone and pointing it right at me! ??? This guy isn't a real officer or security guard, or even a wannabe security guard! He hopes to someday be a wannabe security guard! Why don't you go follow real thieves around the store? there are plenty of them here! So much about this store doesn't make sense to me! Like what happened to Mekayla for instance? and why do the courtesy clerks have to haphazardly grab multiple bottles of liquor from the cabinets without even having a little cart of some kind for the times when a bunch of people want a bunch of bottles all at once? What is it about this Safeway that attracts so much shoplifting????? Almost every other trip here I see some sort of crime drama. Most recently a girl with a basket full of stuff was on her way to the door - I don't know the whole story but apparently a male accomplice also had a basket but didn't go through the checkstand and was waiting to go out with her at the same time. The guard was wise to her though and tried to stop her from taking the cart - she actually grabbed the disinfectant spray bottle from the self checkout area and started spraying the poor guy. In the end the cart was turned over in the tussle (see photos) and police were called. Its really disgusting what happens here and that thanks to these people that think its ok to get something for nothing. Because of this much of the non-food merchandise is in LOCKED cases now.... Don't get me wrong - this is actually a decent Safeway with a good size and selection - its just a shame what goes on here. They seriously need to consider getting more security here....the single middle aged ones they have now are not enough... read more

Selling old bread now? I have been very disappointed when trying to get a baguette. For 3 weeks now I noticed that on Sunday morning the rustic baguettes are old. It is clearly old bread, even the paper bags are wrinkly like it has been touched by many people for days. Once I asked for a fresher one and the bakery employee got me one that was a really cold, proving they are refrigerated from the day before. I asked and they denied. Expired food on shelves. All the employees hate working here and the hate the manager. Skip the deli. Ambika will just say turkey doesn't exist because she doesn't feel like working. Deli employees prioritize standing around gossiping and texting. Waited 38 minutes because the staff wanted to stand around doing nothing. Ambika seems to hate taking deli orders. Pointed to a sandwich on their menu and she said it didn't exist. Eventually put JUST turkey and mayo into 1/4 of a bread roll after she was done texting and the line got really long. There were 3 other people standing around doing nothing at the deli. 38 minutes later Ambika claims the sandwiches posted on their sign don't exist. I asked the other guy standing there and he told me to wait! After 38 minutes! Wait? while he was texting on his phone using the same gloves he's touching his hair, face, clothes and all the food with. Spoke to the manager and her solution was just to tell me to go back in line or buy an expired sandwich they have on shelves. The manager is really as bad as everyone says. I knew I should've left instead of waiting for her when the cashiers said she was useless and lazy. This is the worse Safeway in the Bay Area. All the yogurt parfaits at the entrance were expired. Their packaged microwave plates aren't sealed like other Safeway locations. Most of the ready made sandwiches were expired also. Left with nothing after waiting more than 45 minutes. The manager was trying to hard sell me one of their expired sandwiches that are packaged since she knows they're all past their sell by date. The most disgusting people work here. read more

This place has given me, my mom, and my sister problems everytime we go to Safeway in Westlake. Most of the cashiers are rude and sloppy. Sometimes even the people behind the meat section are cold, rude, or sometimes insane. There was a time that my mom and my sister wanted to get some cut up meat and the front lady started to scream at them for no reason at all. The lady even called the manager, which he ended up not being the manager, but just a worker. There have been other workers who've followed my sister and my mom in the past like they're going to steak something but they were just shopping. While other people were stealing behind the security guards back. But that's not all, cashiers always try to rip off my mom with the prices and they get mad when my mom catches them. They get mad at her and try to steal he'd money but they never get mad when other shoppers are stealing in front of their faces which has happened when I shop with my mom sometimes. But this is some of the details that have happened in the past. Today, was the day that an incident happened that's given me the reason to write all of this. Today, is June 1st, 2024, a Saturday, my mom was paying for her food that she shopped with her hard money that she worked for. She asked for bags to a young boy, maybe Hindu, which he replied to it. But how he was handling her food was so impulsing. He was grabbing the food and stuffing it in the bags. He didn't put them in correctly and some of the food got crushed. But that wasn't all, he started to throw thingd in the bag and was rude about counting the change like he was throwing it too in the case register. The bags were messed up wnd crushed. It got so bad that I had to fix them. There were also signs that he ripped the plastic bags which one of his co-workers, a older lady, noticed that they were broken. He was talklng back to my mom and even was going to through the recipient at my mom like he didn't want to deal with her anymore. She confronted him about the matter which hid attitude changed. Going from being rude and talk backing at my mom to doing face that he didn't do anything wrong. What made it worse is that his co-worker got into the situation, which lead for him to hold his line back just to get into a situation that he was no part of. He was starting to talk back at my mom and even replied to "My cashier" about his co-worker. He wasn't the manager so he had no reason to even say that. He acted like he was the manager of the place which he wasn't and started to ignore his customers. They were starting to gang up on my mom but my mom confronted back at them and will inform Corporation (Texas) to report what happend today. It was so uncalled for and insulting towards her. That cashier was assaulting my mom's food and that other cashier wanted to start trouble which he had no business on. That cashier was a young tall Asian boy. It's so sad that Safeway Westlake is rude, cold, insulting, stealers, and arrogant narcissistic workers who have no business of working I places like thus. Wow can't believe i haven't done a Review at this Safeway. The last time i was here was 4 years ago when i was driving but things have changed. So here was my experience when i did come here for 10 years it was a love and hate Relationship here at this Safeway lol because you have nice and RUDE Employees and most of the Managers were really nice but had few bad Apples. One thing was the baggers they were always nice and helpful especially when you needed help getting your bags to the car. But the days not to come was $5.00 Friday because it was crazy because of the sale they were having and loved the monopoly game because love getting the tickets that you get FREE items. The parking was good here because of all the front spaces and was easier get in the store. When i did come here years ago they would substitute if they were out of the sale items they would sometimes give you a rain check and you had 90 days to used it but now Safeway changed it to only 30 days. As a Safeway app and rewards member I typical go here for the convenience and whatever specials are advertised. Located at Westlake mall, this location has ample parking space. Typical to most chain supermarkets, the customer service can be hit or miss. If you can find them. But when you do, for the most part they'll help you the best they can. And the staff do their best for restocking items and keeping the place well maintained. In terms of pricing, it's better to get the rewards card since you'll save a noticeable amount over the non-member prices. read more
