They are not open until midnight. My daughter asked me to run out and get lettuce for her guinea pigs. I got there at 11:55PM and the current manager rudely refused to open the door saying they'd shut down the registers even thought the hours said open until midnight! It would have taken me about 30 seconds to be in and out, but my lord did this person give me an attitude -- no way to treat a long-time customer! After over 20 years, I'm no longer shopping at this Safeway until this rude night manager is gone. Looking at some of the other reviews, seems like others have been treated similarly by current staff - not surprising given how rude the current manager who was closing tonight was. For a small store, it is a Safeway after all and they do carry it a little bit of everything so it's nice than when you were looking for that special item that they'll probably have it even in the market this size. The shelves are well stocked, and the customers are very happy. Aside from the generous meat department and produce department. They have a nice little bakery and they have a pharmacy inside which makes it convenient. There's always plenty of parking outside. The store is also convenient and clean. read more

Safeway supermarket in Solano in Berkeley California has a great selection of pretty much everything you might want at a supermarket. The deli serves delicious chicken breasts and sometimes bean burritos, french fries and Asian style chicken tenders. They also have gourmet items like Judy's bread sticks in coffee or sunflower flavors. Many kinds of ice cream in the cooler and about 5 kinds of yogurt. Fabulous! And the staff do not care about trying to give their job a good reputation. Four employees told me Safeway doesn't accept Safeway digital gift cards. How is Safeway doing such a poor job of training its staff? That was the main takeaway from this visit, but I will also mention that I saw another customer wait several minutes for an employee to open a glass door in order to select an item that was inaccessible. I finally hit one of the other buttons to notify the staff that there was still (at least) someone in need of assistance. I don't doubt that they had other work to do, but the customer service is really lacking at Safeway as a whole, and particularly at this location. read more

The employees here must hate their manager and/or job at this location. Surly employees at the counters and working in the aisles. Straight up angry and unhelpful. Hi, over the years me and my family have spent probably thousands of dollars at this location because it's so close by to the schools and our home. And i have to say the customer service has become disgraceful. Not only does your self checkout constantly have issues? But your staff who should be manning the self checkout area are severely incompetent. I have had to stand at the self checkout with an error screen waiting for a staff member for over 25 minutes. mind you this has happened several times at the location! as well as your staff blatantly are rude to customers and your online coupons sometimes just don't work, even the ones you have up as the price tag IN THE STORE. When i showed a staff member this, he did not offer me any help. while i do not think its the stores fault since tech can be iffy, i would like to see better hires the next time i come to the store, that is if i do. Because from now on, the Berkeley location will become my main store. as well as several times when shopping i have purchased food that was one day out from expiration. not best by, expiration date. If you go there for any time if cold medicine or even a vitamin don't expect to actually get the product. They lock up the entire section and when you press the button for someone to help, nobody comes. Happened on multiple occasion. I try not to be a 1 star reviewer, because... because. But, the people need to be warned. This store is gross. It's small, but oddly, quite a bit of parking. Product inventory is super limited. Prices are high. The place is just dirty. 2 of my items were already opened when i went to pay for it. Don't count on this store to be open 24 hrs - it isn't. Safeway website, app & Google search all say it is - it ain't. You'll be greeted by an unwelcoming black residential door. Even the door sign says 24 hrs. At least a half dozen other unhappy customers walked up to the locked door in the short time I was parked. This is literally the worst grocery store I have been to in every way. I have never just left a grocery store because they don't provide basic needs - until this one. I stopped here because it was the nearest Safeway on my way back home - big mistake. It clearly is terribly managed by whoever is in charge of this location. Products were completely bent and mangled throughout the store, if available at all. Most of the shelves were completely empty. It honestly shocked me that it was possible for a location to even be in operation still with such a low standard of quality and organization. I left this Safeway and went to one on Shattuck. Not for the first time, I waited over half an hour for my "Drive Up and Go" grocery order. No one answers the phone at this store, and eventually I had to unbuckle my kid, walk in the store and find someone to help us. Apparently the one employee who both answers the phone and brings out the groceries was on break. If limited employees means this service can no longer be offered - STOP OFFERING IT. I will happily take 45 minutes to shop for my own groceries, but next time it will be at a different Safeway. read more

Had not eaten all day and it is 3:40pm. My dental appointment is at 4:00pm. I decided in a simple sandwich Short story: A decent Boars-head roast beef on a soft roll. A puny roll, maybe 5"? The Albany Safeway is open a wide range of hours which means if I wanted a snack super early in the morning or late at night, this is the place I would come when I was living in Albany. If I wanted to pick up a few items I would also stop here, though this did not become my main Safeway store in part because of the lines. They were the longest lines of any of the Safeways I frequented in East Bay, and they would form at random times like three in the afternoon. The workers were frequently strained and they handled the lines and us customers well. No flippant behavior that I encountered. When the pharmacy at the North Berkeley Safeway was out of my medicine, this was the location I would get my prescription filled. My interactions at the pharmacy were good and they were tolerant if I came at an off hour when they were about to leave and still helped me get my prescription filled. Kombucha, the occasional meat and produce, frozen novelties, yogurt, almond butter, and chicken from the deli section were some of the items I commonly bought here. Good prices and selection with good 'just for U' in-store deals using the Safeway app on I downloaded for my phone. My last meal in the state of California when I moved home to Washington State consisted of fried Chicken from this Safeway and scones from the Trader Joe's at El Cerrito Plaza. Perfect food for eating on the road as I my dad and I drove my belongings north from Albany, California to Shoreline, Washington. It hit the spot and made the drive more enjoyable. read more

Racist security guard and greedy employees, I recently went over to solano's safeway and had to deal with a rude security guard that wouldn't stop staring and following me and my friend. I am a mexican and so is my friend, we came in with another group and split at the doors the other group was fully white and had no issues or weird looks from the guard. After being tailgated the entire time for a single bottle of water I go to check out and have my change pocketed by a cashier in the front of the store and have argue with him after refusing to hand me over my change. All of the reviews about how terrible this location is has turned out to be pretty accurate, unfortunately. And my latest incident was truly egregious. While checking out, I noticed that my Safeway offer on my card did not load when the cashier rang me up. After I pointed it out, a lady who I'm guessing was the manager on duty quickly came over and immediately asked me if someone in my family or I had already redeemed the offer. Implying that I was trying to redeem the same offer twice. I told her noone redeemed the offer, and I asked the cashier if I could try entering my phone number again. The cashier obliged, and voided the transaction and re-processed it, and unfortunately the offer still would not show up. I showed the manager my Safeway app, clearly reflecting the offer still on my account. She quickly stated that I obviously entered my own phone number wrong (twice at this point), snatched my phone out of my hand, scrolled through my app, and pulled up the account settings. At which point, she showed me my screen, stating "THAT is the correct phone # to use!" (as if I don't know my own #). We decided to try the transaction again a 3rd time, and on this 3rd attempt, the register finally registered the offer. Instead of apologizing or acknowledging some sort of system delay/failure, the manager decided to double down on blaming me and asked: "did you JUST scan it?!?!" My puzzled response was: "Scan what?!?!" Manager: "The offer! You need at least 15mins after you click into it!" I let her know that I actually added the offer in the morning (a good 9hrs+ ago). And promptly grabbed my item, receipt, and walked out. As I had about enough of this rude engagement at this point and did not need to waste anymore of my time getting insulted. Horrendous customer service aside, this is also a smaller Safeway with no bakery, no self-checkout, and had only 1 register open when I got in line. Save yourself the headache of shopping at this location and just head to the El Cerrito location on San Pablo. read more

I came to this Safeway at 3:53 AM to get some Tylenol and it was closed but Google, Yelp and the front entrance shows that they're supposed to be 24hrs. This Safeway Pharmacy has rude and ill informed pharmacists and assistants. I usually avoid writing reviews, especially bad reviews. But this pharmacy is unprofessional and unpleasant. We are elderly and qualified for our covid boosters. The unpleasant pharmacist is not following CDC guidelines and refused to give us the vaccinations that we had scheduled online. We were able to receive our vaccinations at another non Safeway pharmacy where we were treated respectfully. The store is neglected and is taking up valuable real estate that is better used for housing. read more

The young man who helped me and rang up my food was great. But there were no weekly ads. I spent time clipping a deal for the Gatorade - supposedly $1.69 but the digital sale didn't show up at the checkout. I've suspected the deals don't come through when you buy lots of groceries. I isolated the digital coupon items; one went through & one didn't. The clerk said turn off blue tooth & wifi for it to go through. I feel frustrated by the app - its not easy to use it. read more

The worst place ever! I work graveyard shift and went in to try to go get some lunch only to be disappointed when I reached the door and there is a handwritten sign saying closed , I'm calling the Safeway phone number and it says that it's open 24 hours, and finally an employee that sitting down walks up to the window and asks me what the hell I want, I say isn't the store open 24 hours he says, it used to be. I said well when is it going to open up and be 24 hours again he says whenever the hell they change their mind and open it back up we're shortstaffed! I live nearby and have been going here for almost 12 years now. It's gotten worse as the years go by. The worst grocery store I have ever gone too. Horrible management, customer service, expired goods, dishonorable with return policies, and dirty. Plus, their security guards do not help keeping the theft and crime down. I have been pushed aside as people steal items and walk out the front door. Too many homeless people, most of them very aggressive and some violent, frequent the store. I used to love this store but it is beyond ridiculous now. I keep telling myself I'm never coming back but due to it being close to my house I give it chance after chance. I'm not sure who the manager is because every time I want to talk to one it's a different person claiming they are. The staff all walk around with ear buds in their ears and when you ask for help they seem upset you interrupted their phone conversation. There is one or two cashiers with long lines while a group of staff members stand around talking. This has been the case the last few visits I've had. Thank goodness there are so many other options not too far. I'll drive a little further to get better service. read more

I have been shopping at the Solano Avenue Safeway for about 56 years. It has had its ups and downs over the years, but mostly it has been good for me and my family. I appreciate the consistent staff there over the years, especially Cindi. Today I was fortunate to have a wonderful new checker named Ariel help me. He is familiar to me but not at this store. What a pleasure. I came away smiling. A nice smile and a friendly word, especially about the Warriors, goes a long way in making your shopping experience a good one. After having ankle surgery and unable to ambulate and bear weight for several weeks, I decided to utilize Safeway online delivery service. The first order belonged to someone else. Had to replace and wait an additional day to receive my order due to their error. I decided to give them another chance and place another order on 11/28/22 for some cold pressed juice that serves as healing for pain. I place the order 4 eight bottles of juice and specifically declined substituting the items for alternatives. Well, low and behold.... they substituted my item and experienced an allergic reaction because the substituted items had totally different ingredients. When i called the customer service number at 877-505-4040 and spoke to Shannon, she was the rudest and most argumentative person ever..... I explained over and over that I had never opted for substitutions and she treated me like i was lying to her. She refused to provide a refund and told me I "need to bring items back to store". even though I repeatedly informed her that I had ankle surgery and couldn't ambulate. No apology, empathy, or compassion for others. I also requested that she have a manager call me back and two days later- no call. I called back on 12/1/22 and spoke with Delphia. Although he was somewhat pleasant, he was condescending and in a covert manner insinuated that I made an error in my selection. He informed me that I' will give you a one-time refund this time, but next time call us before you place your order to ensure their website reflects accurate order information. When I walked him through the online screen, I pointed out that the substitution option was never selected. He went on to say: you have to select several options to avoid substitution of items. Does one have to take an online tutorial to order from "Safeway"? No accountability for defects in their system. This was a horrible experience and I will use "Sprouts" as my go to store in the future. read more

Excellent selection of food. I haven't been here in years. I picked a beautiful cabbage from the produce section and took it to check out. That's when I discovered the sad truth. There were long checkout lines from hell, and the people totally ignored social distancing. Yes, they wore masks, but we all know how useless masks are. It was not safe. My review from several years ago is still pretty much on target, but in light of the COVID 19 shut down of most businesses, this Safeway's approach and handling of the situation requires special notew. I'm not a fan of Safeway, but the store did well in a couple of areas, and it speaks well of management. The things I liked: a) The security guard: I have no idea what her name is, but she works mornings and, in my experience, is pleasant, friendly, and helpful. Also, having a nice person employed by the store engage with people entering the store helps alleviate the damage that will inevitably be done to customer relations by the omnipresent shitty employees. b) Fast restock: One reason to go to this Safeway, the thing that really surprised me, was the speed of restock. Okay, so this is a smallish Safeway, but in a time of shortages and supply disruptions, this Safeway always, always, always stocked what they had before or just as they opened, and they always had a line on the hard-to-come-by items (at least in the mornings). Yeast, flour, meat, dish soap, and a wall of toilet paper (after the whole "toilet paper hoarding" episode of the COVID-19 outbreak, it almost looks indecently ostentatious. Almost.) were all here, and these things all went onto the shelves when they became available. c) Prices: For all of it's faults, this Safeway does have some good prices when minimizes the getting treated like shit at the cash register. The down side is that you need access to a Safeway Club Card account to get the most benefit of the low prices. Crossing the finish line: 3 stars: adequate service generally, an awesome security guard, and a literal wall of toilet paper. read more
