What an awesome day we had at Safari West yesterday!! It has been a bucket list item for our family for quite some time and we were thrilled when the stars aligned to make it happen! We took our kids, ages 8 and 6, and they LOVED it! Our tour guide, Nicole, was awesome! She has been at Safari West for 4 years and really knows the animals, their behaviors and all the fun facts (along with some great jokes!). The jeep tour was about 2 hours, but it is engaging the whole time. We were lucky and got to see several brand new babies of multiple species!! We were all able to take turns sitting on top of the jeep, but sitting on the inside was great as well. After a short break, we did the walking tour which was the perfect ending. Also, we highly recommend the lunch buffet (which must be booked 48 hrs prior to arrival). We were all pleasantly surprised with how great the food was, plus it was kid approved as well! We booked our tour about a month ahead and chose our date, but the weather had other plans and it ended up raining. Even so, we decided to go. Our tour guide, Megan, was wonderful, friendly, engaging, and great at making the experience enjoyable despite the weather. My little one was beyond excited and kept calling it "going on an adventure," which made it even more special. That said, there weren't as many animals out to see, probably because of the rain, since some were hiding inside. The stop and go process to open and close the gates along the way was also a bit annoying and felt like it slowed things down at times. Toward the end of our tour, the rain picked up from a light shower to a heavy downpour, but we were able to finish in time. Seeing how happy my little one was made it all worth it. She sat up top with her dad and had an amazing time. ***One thing to keep in mind is that there is no cell service at the location, so plan accordingly. We didn't stay overnight, so I can't speak to the Wi-Fi situation, but if you need connectivity, you'll have to drive back into the city.*** P.S. Avoid going on rainy days! read more

Went on a weekday (Friday) the ticket is a little bit less on the weekday. We booked a 10 am tour and a 1:00 pm lunch buffet. The tour started with a 30 min walking tour. The enclosed walk through of the birds sanctuary was amazing!! My daughters favorite part because she wants to study birds. We then rode the safari truck and Jeff was amazing educating us on the whole tour. You were aloud to bring your bag, snacks and water on the truck. If you wanted to sit up top everyone who wanted to got a chance to during the tour and change seating at stop in the tour. The animals are all well taken care of there are areas of shade for all animals. There was lots of up close encounters with the animals. Great tour! Recommend and go! We booked the 1:00pm lunch. It was BBQ chicken, option of pork, salad, fruit, potatoe salad, asparagus, Mac and cheese, beans, and a roll. You can pick what you want your plate or jus what interest you. They provide water, but if you want drink it's extra. All was good! It's worth the reservation. We did go back and see the birds again and then went to the gift shop for a souvenir. Lots available. If you have never been to Safari West I'd recommend at least going once. It s fun and educational experience! read more

Valentine's Day - Adult Only - Love Tour!!! Highly recommend this fun event for animal-loving couples. My wife and I love visiting the different zoo's any time we get to travel. While Santa Rose doesn't have an official zoo, the Safari West is an acceptable alternative. The normal cost per person is about $110 to $120 depending on when you go. For the special Valentine's Day event that we attended, the cost was $175 per person. This event included lunch for both of us with a coupon for a free alcoholic drink. There was also free tea, coffee and hot chocolate. The appetizers were oysters, which I did not try. Lunch was a delicious steak and shrimp. Not steakhouse quality, but still well-cooked and tasty. After lunch there is a 30 minute presentation talking about animal sex and mating habits. Our host was Denise and she was great. She mentioned she was a teacher at the local Jr. college and she had a funny, ADULT, and educational presentation. After that it was off to the safari. You will board a pretty cool jeep that has 3 rows of seats on the truck and 1 row up on top of the truck. Normally they will seat 4 people per row. But on the Valentine's event they specifically book people so that there are only 2 love birds in each row, so you can cuddle up and enjoy your safari. The Safari is 2 parts...45 minute walking tour at basecamp and then 2 hours out in the jeep in the enclosures. So worth it!!!! Valentine's Day 2026 was a cold one. Thankfully, they have blankets on the truck for those who want one. You will see Giraffes, Rhinos, Zebra, Cape Buffalo and various types of antelopes. Safari West is such a special experience and absolutely worth the visit. The tour starts with about a 30-minute walking portion, where you get up close with the birds, cheetahs, and lemurs, which was incredible and felt very personal and interactive. After that, you spend the remaining two hours driving through the preserve, seeing a wide variety of animals in a beautiful, open setting. The guide was knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about the animals, which made the whole experience even better. Everything felt well organized and thoughtfully paced. If you have kids, they will love this--there's so much to see and it really keeps their attention the entire time. It's educational without feeling like a lesson. Also worth mentioning: the gift shop is super cute, with lots of fun souvenirs and unique items to remember the day. We booked the afternoon excursion on Sunday, the latest time in summer, 4-7pm. Found easy parking in the parking lot, checked in for our tour inside the gift shop, explored the outdoor animal exhibits and habitats on site which consisted of monkeys, lemurs, cheetahs, porcupines, flamingos, and a unique collection of bird species including the helmeted guineafowl. Grabbed some refreshments from Delilah's snack bar, and were on our way for our tour. Our tour guide, Kimberly, was awesome. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and brought the personality, allowing us to have an educational and enjoyable experience. She explained how it's baby season in August, so we were lucky to see some baby animals on this day, such as a baby wildebeest, a baby antelope, a baby addax and its unicorn mom with one antler, and the most adorable baby rhino just a month old, running around and playing with his mom while the older male rhino took a mud bath. We even got to hold an ostrich egg and learn about the "happy accident" hybrid kudu we got up close and personal with. The Safari West tours and lodging options are certainly pricey, but the experience is unique, and they seem to put a lot of effort into offering flexibility and comfort for guests here, as well as care for the animals. I love the animals felt safe when the caravan drove close to them, which means they are acclimated and well taken care of. We learned that it takes a village to care for the animals and there are two vets on site. We also opted for the buffet which was a nice touch to end the tour. Recommend if you sit on top of the caravan to get a blanket (which they provide) in the fall months as it can get wet. read more

My family had an amazing time here last week! We stayed overnight. The rooms were pretty spacious and the bathroom was also big. We did the guided tour and our guide, Tad, was funny and very knowledgeable. My favorite part was getting to go inside the aviary. It was beautiful to be amongst so many beautiful birds. Bought 2 tickets off the VIATOR app. It was $110x2 so $220. Expensive it lasted 3 hrs , parking is free and not far from the start of the safari. You check in at the lobby building and they give you wrist bands which you meet your tour guide next to a shaded tiny snack shop. They have small snacks and a microwave. I had a bagel dog which is not tasty at all so make sure you eat a good meal because you me gonna be in the large vehicle for 3 hrs. , 5 min bathroom break, port a potty on the ways. 30/40 minutes is walking not too far and slow walking. We came on a perfect weather weekday Thursday. It was awesome seeing all these birds and animals. Tour guide was Cyndy, she was spectacular we tipped her. TIP if you don't have any loose cash I hand you can go to entry building where you checked in and you use a credit card to tip your tour guide and the will write the amount and your names for them to see. This was wonderful to be able to show your appreciation to the safari guide. The 400 acreage was massive, and the wildlife seemed comfortable and not overwhelming crowded. My favorite animal was the ostrich and the baby rhinoceros Oz. Ostrich was great to see ultimate close up and pecking at our vehicle. They have glamping if you want it spend the night too. Another TIP, the winding road getting there has dead cell phone zones and our phones went to SOS status our carrier is ATT btw. Inside was no issues . Bathroom are decorated and motion sensors and very tidy. I would recommend this place if you're in a staycation in Santa Rosa. We had people from Minnesota and a family they came all the way from Columbia! Picture are encouraging and everyone has a chance to sit freely on top of the vehicle, there is not a bad seat in the vehicle as the seated rows are bleacher style like the movies. Really cool seeing giraffes up super close. I really enjoyed not too far from downtown , just not a whole lot of fast food I this side of town. Go to Windsor or downtown Santa Rosa we found a phenomenal Himalayan restaurant which won many awards and it didn't disappoint. We were celebrating our Anniversary and we didn't bring our children. Lol. They had a marine biologist talk and s'mores too. Our tent #18 was wonderful. Our tour guide Angelina was awesome. The little snack shop had lots of awesome things including complimentary coffee. The bbq dinner was really good. Amy was a wonderful server. I love that coffee, tea and hot chocolate are available anytime. Breakfast is available the next morning and they had a good selection including delicious fresh squeezed orange juice. We came here for their standard tour. This could be singular to hitting rainy weather, but our experience was lackluster. Maybe the company name set the bar too high, but I definitely would not call this a safari. We didn't see that many animals up close. Many were behind gates and fairly far away / hard to see. We would drive and our driver would have to get out, open a gate, drive the jeep through the gate, shut the gate - it was a very slow process that left much to be desired. The experience might also vary based on your guide - ours was perfectly pleasant but there wasn't much engagement. Overall it felt like going to a zoo in a jeep and with fewer animals / worse views. I would not come back. That said if you plan to do this the general advice I got was to book the early time slot when animals are more active. Would also request the top seat. If you hit rain and can't reschedule like us, they did allow us to walk to see the giraffes. Overall this felt like a tourist trap! read more

We had a wonderful Safari tour with Nicole as our guide, Nicole was vey informative and explain the animals well to our grand children who asked lots of questions, The only improvement I could see is for there to me more automatic gates to make it easier for the tour guides. Safari West is located in Santa Rosa, CA. Reservations are required so I recommend planning ahead during the tourist months especially. I recommend scouring their website as they tend to offer discount codes. We got lucky with the fall discount which dropped a $120 ticket to $96 which was appreciated! We did add on lunch for an additional $20 which I recommend by all means as the buffet was absolutely delicious and filling! The tour itself is around 3.5 hours. We did the general safari tour which consisted of a walk of the grounds about a mile long (hour and 30 minutes) to see the bird sanctuary and other animals such as cheetahs, foxes, primates etc. Our tour guide for the grounds was Alex and he was incredibly knowledgeable. Once you complete the on foot tour you will do a safari tour of the Sonoma Serengeti on a safari tram which was truly breath taking. Our tour guide Rebecca was so friendly and informative! The scenery is majestic and although there are not a ton of animals it still makes the experience enjoyable. We were able to see the giraffes, rhinos, antelopes, buffalos, ostriches and zebras. Keep in mind that all their animals are based on animals found in Africa, Tips: FREE PARKING Wear sneakers, no open shoes. ABSOLUTE NO CELL PHONE service once you pull into the parking lot so keep that in mind as you will be there for 3 plus hours. Reviewing the safari- as we didn't stay overnight or dine there. We visited Safari West in March and had an incredible experience. Our guide, Jeff was great. He clearly knows these animals inside and out -- not just the facts, but the nuances -- and he answered every question from our group with confidence and patience. What stood out most was how attentive and engaged he was with everyone, regardless of their age or question. You could tell he genuinely loves what he does. The experience itself delivered so many memorable moments: a two-day-old baby cape buffalo, Ozzy the white rhino calf, giraffes, wildebeest, and antelope -- we saw a lot of them (and learned that while all gazelles are antelope, not all antelope are gazelles). The weather was warm but comfortable, and the group we were with was engaged and curious, which made the whole tour even more enjoyable. We did a walking portion before boarding the open air vehicle, which was a great way to ease into it. The gift shop was well-stocked with helpful staff, and being able to grab food during the break was a nice touch. Overall a really well-run operation from start to finish. We visited this place on May 3, 2026. We did the Safari tour, had lunch at the restaurant, and did the rhino experience. The overall experience was outstanding! The safari tour was fun and our Driver Justin was friendly and informative, as well as funny. The animals are right there to see and the tour did last about three hours. It is bumpy so you if you have lower back pain, I would caution against it. We had lunch at the restaurant afterwards, and the food was quite delicious which was surprising because our experience with things like this is the food is not that great. However, that was not the case with this place. I went back for Second and my two boys who are picky. Eaters went back for thirds. Afterwards, we did the rhino experience and that was great as well. We all got to pet the rhinos which are my son's favorite animal. Justin was our driver for the tour and Lori was our person for the rhino experience and they were both fabulous. I recommend this place wholeheartedly. Sidenote: I tried to leave a review on Google for this place, but I could not because they wanted me to answer a bunch of other questions that I did not have information about. Had a day off so decided to take a day trip with our 8 year old to check this place out. Being only an hour away from SF, this is a hidden gem I never knew about! Tickets were a little pricey, but considering the length of time the tour takes, it was worth it for an almost full day excursion. We first walked the grounds to look at mostly their monkeys and birds. The jeep ride took us all around the property and it was so fun to get up close and personal with giraffes, zebras, and buffalo! Our guide was super passionate and funny, but our group was a little bit on the quiet side so I could tell he was wanting us to ask more questions and keep the dialogue going. We also opted for the buffet lunch, since we figured we would be starving after the tour. For the price, it was worth it. The food was simple but hearty and delicious (salad, veggies, chicken, mac n cheese, fruits). Will definitely return once my younger son hits the minimum age limit! read more

We stayed overnight in one of their many tents. I was so pleasantly surprised at how spacious it was inside and how clean it felt! And the bathroom was huge and included a shower. It does get cold at night, in high contrast to how hot it is during the day and early evening. We ate at the Savannah Cafe onsite for dinner, which was buffet style. The buffet wasn't very extensive, but the food that we did have was solid. Drinks aren't included unfortunately. We unfortunately weren't able to do a safari tour because my daughter is only 3 (you need to be 4+ years old to do the driving safari). We instead did the behind-the-scenes tour which was quite pricey ($275/adult, $15/toddler), but it was excellent. We got to get up close and feed warthogs, porcupines, birds in the aviary, and giraffes. It was incredible to be so close to the giraffes--they are beautiful! My toddler enjoyed herself so much. My husband did, too. The guide was amazing. He was so friendly and kind, great with my daughter, and he was so knowledgeable and flexible during the tour. He encouraged us to take photos and offered multiple times to take photos/videos of us feeding the animals. It was notable how fantastic all of the employees were--from the man who drove us from check-in to our tent and gladly helped us with our luggage to the waitress at Savannah cafe to the tour guide, etc. They were all so genuine and friendly and great with our toddler. Whoa! I didn't know Santa Rosa has this unique Safari resort in their backyard! It's surprisingly such a hidden gem as a resort for kids and adults alike! If one wants to venture out safari style, do glamping and have a resort stay in the Bay Area, this place checks all the boxes. It's so pleasant here and one feels like you're on a zoo campground if you're glamping. I like seeing the cheetahs, giraffes and kudus. We weren't able to do the actual safari because we brought our newborn baby and there's an age requirement. No biggie - we will definitely return when he is of age! I'm impressed with their dinner. Their homemade bbq sauce, went well with their tender trip tip beef and I adored their spiced rice that was on the nice dry side to soak up their bbq sauce. Wonderful service and friendly staff all around. One has to reserve dinner and lunch. It's buffet style. Continental breakfast. They have a great selection of tea, the little things of providing both soy and oat milk for coffee and I love their freshly squeezed OJ. They have servers at that time to serve the portions of scrambled eggs and toasted bagels. Their oatmeal was well made- not too dry and if so, one can add milk that they provide on the side. Ayce. Checking in was a bit delayed since their system had to ask for a physical credit card and they couldn't use the one that we booked the stay with. Also, one can't drive your own car to your unit. They drive you to the unit so we had to unload and load everything we had. A bit inconvenient, but that's house rules I suppose. Our glamping unit 26 had a very nice front view of the water at the balcony. The decor and glamping furniture is pretty cool. I wished that they have a mini fridge though. Instead, they provided a chill box and a bag of ice at check in. They make you check out at the gift shop, which is a smart move because it entices you to peruse through their souvenirs. I ended buying South African hot sauces and braai sauce. (It's delicious by the way. I highly suggest on getting a few for those bbq days.) It's relaxing here and I felt like one with nature while being with my starter family. One doesn't have to roam around too much to get a glimpse of wild animals. I took my sons, ages 6 and 8, to Safari West this past February, and we had a wonderful time. My youngest had just met the height requirement to ride on top of the vehicle and was so excited. We got to see the animals up close, with great explanations from our guide throughout the tour. One of the highlights was witnessing a baby antelope being born and attempt its first steps -- such an incredible moment. The boys had a million questions on the drive home! This is the second time we ventured on this Safari up in the mountains of Santa Rosa, which is right next to the petrified forest. We opted for their lunch one hour prior to our Safari tour, which is a buffet. They also have a great wine selection. Now there is a four seater on the top of the vehicle which people will take turns if they choose to want to view from the top. The ride portion is two hours where you get to see 18 species and hundreds of animals starting with the giraffes the must see ostrich is the lazy rhinoceros and a bunch of antelope. It's a nice ride very educational and after the ride, there is a 45 minute nature walk where you get to see some of the birds and their cheetah. The experience is well worth it. Tipping your driver is highly recommended. They are very knowledgeable and is what makes the tour more enjoyable. read more

An absolutely unforgettable experience! We did the safari package for our anniversary, which included a 3 hour safari, dinner and breakfast, and one night in a yurt on the property. Dano was our guide and he did a phenomenal job on the safari; extremely knowledgeable and engaging. The dinner was a delicious bbq style buffet, followed by smores around the fire pit. The grounds are so beautifully maintained and the variety of animals was impressive. The yurts were gorgeous, equipped with a full bathroom in each one. No lions or tigers or bears but OH, MY!! Safari West is a wild animal encounter in the hills outside of Santa Rosa. One of their many options was the ability to spend the night in a luxury tent (hardwood floors and a bathroom with a shower) and that's what we opted for. We arrived at 3:00, settled into our tent perched next to several of the wild animal enclosures (lots of antelope-type critters and llamas right across the road from us) and went down to the buffet BBQ dinner at 5:00 (for an extra charge). The food was plentiful if not spectacular but the s'mores were a nice touch. As for the accommodations I'm sure that somewhere in the literature it says "wear sweats and socks to bed because the floor heater doesn't do jackshit and you'll freeze your nipples off!" Unfortunately we were ill-prepared but the frigid night of sleep was the only negative. After a chilly night's sleep and lack of a good internet signal we headed for the continental breakfast which was fine enough. Then we headed back to the tent, packed our bags and checked out in time for our 10:00 "safari" start time. What a great three hours were ahead of us. Our guide, Dano, walked us past the flamingo enclosure and through the huge aviary, pointing out the many varieties of birds as well as the family of tiny blue duikers, then took us around to see the cheetahs, a few monkeys and lemurs and various other animals. After a bathroom break we boarded the safari jeeps and set off for the safari part. I won't bore you with a list of all we saw but suffice it to say we were not disappointed. We spent the next two hours riding through the hills seeing most of what you would find on the savannahs of Africa--highlighted by nine giraffes and three rhinos--with the sightings punctuated by Dano's incredible insights and knowledge. (We lucked out because he was a trainer at Safari West and has spent a fair amount of time in Botswana.) For someone who has always wanted to do the African safari thing but didn't want to commit the time and effort to actually doing it this was the perfect compromise. read more

We Had a fun day at Safari West in Santa Rosa, yesterday. What a neat place! Our Safari Driver, Robert, was super knowledgeable about the animals within the park and taught us many facts about these African Animals. Did you know a Zebras stripes are hair and if you shave a zebra their skin is all black underneath? I thought that was a cool fact. Also, they have Glamping tents here too! We had SUCH a wonderful time here today!! A Truly magical experience. I have to give a HUUUUGE shout out to our tour guide Killian, what an amazing human. So knowledgeable, and beyond entertaining! We were there celebrating a birthday and could not have asked for a better experience!! The baby rhino was seriously one of the cutest lil things I've ever seen in my life!! Our visit to Safari West was truly unforgettable, and it was one of the most special experiences I've ever shared with my son. From the moment we arrived, we were immersed in an environment that felt both adventurous and thoughtfully designed, with incredible animals, stunning scenery, and a real sense of care for conservation and education. Seeing my son's excitement as he spotted giraffes, zebras, and rhinos up close was priceless--this is the kind of experience that creates lifelong memories. My favorite were the Two female ostrich. They definitely gave us a good show. What truly elevated our visit, though, was our guide Killan.She was absolutely phenomenal and made the entire safari come alive. Her knowledge was impressive, but what really stood out was her enthusiasm, warmth, and ability to connect with both adults and kids. She explained everything in a way that was engaging and easy to understand, answered every question with patience and passion, and made sure everyone felt included and excited. My son was completely captivated by her stories and insights, and it was clear how much she genuinely loves what she does. Killan's energy, professionalism, and kindness turned a great experience into an exceptional one. Safari West is a must-visit, especially for families, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you're lucky enough to have Killan as your guide, you're in for something truly special. We left with full hearts, amazing photos, and memories we'll be talking about for years to come. Really enjoyed spending a weekend afternoon exploring Safari West! I wanted to give a special shout-out to your Guide Manager, Leslie, who graciously stepped in for another guide at the last minute. She made our three-hour tour unforgettable -- weaving in conservation stories, sharing details about the newborns and their parents, and fielding nonstop questions from a very curious young boy with so much patience and care. Every answer she gave was thoughtful and perfectly tailored for his inquisitive mind. At the end of the tour, I told her what I'll say again here: thank you for teaching empathy and compassion for these animals. We need so much more of that in the world right now. read more

100 times yes for the safari! Alex really made our safari special. So knowledgeable and just a fun personality. We saw so many just born babies and spent so much time with each animal. Even though it poured rain it proved to be the best time to see animals as animals love the rain! We kept warm with blankets and umbrellas they provided but glad I also brought my own poncho (though they had those too!) absolutely would do this again!! read more

Where do I start? Safari West is a great experience. We first walk into a large aviary. Beautiful birds. Large flock of flamingos in a different section. Playful lemurs. Robert our tour guide drove the custom safari vehicle, we sat at the top seat and what a great view from there. A little challenging getting up there. Robert would make stops and gave us expert information on the animals, great time for photos. He is passionate about his duties. He also had to move an very large ostrich blocking a gate for vehicles to drive through, ostrich was not having it but eventually moved. Later he said there is a 'bonanza' up the hill meaning lots of animals together. He stated he has not seen this in years. See my pix. We get very close to animals, some maybe 5 feet away. A giraffe approached us curios why we were on his road. Zebras staring at us like we were their entertainment. We pre-paid for lunch and I was impressed on the quality of the food. Melon, caesar salad, grilled asparagus, mac and cheese real cheese, fancy bean dish, shredded pork, chicken breast with wing attached fancy. The grounds are very clean and the animals look well cared for and happy. A short story can be written on how magnificent this place is. You should come u leave feeling happy. This was worth every penny. read more
