As a recent graduate from my PhD, I knew a ton about my topic but nothing about the job search…read moreworld. I was overwhelmed, feeling discouraged and disappointed in the lack of help the university and my past professors could offer. I phoned 6 companies, and as I asked my questions I ran into obstacle after obstacle. No one could provide me statistics on their sucess rates, no one provided me with any real world or tangible proof, until Resume Target. I had almost given up on finding help, and then I received a call not only from Amos, but Talya too. They answered all of my questions, provided me a basic plan, typical step wise progression, clarified what each "promise" and "guarantee" meant, and why they would recommend a particular writer for me. I suddenly had real world and tangible information, Linkedin was covered, reasons for cover letters, reasons why one of their plans worked best for me over another, and support. So much support. Those calls were not five minute marketing, those were 30 minutes of genuine time, and explanation. Amos and Talya then guided me towards ViJay, and I was impressed again. Vijay went thru 17 years of schooling with me, and sorted and identified the key components. As a PhD my entire focus is a tiny spectrum, not marketing myself and my knowledge. I felt so comfortable and uplifted by the sentences, phrases and wording the ViJay was pulling out of my pile of info, that I even confided in him the worst criticism I had ever received and asked him how we could go about honestly representing it. He told me that he could and would. Less than a half week later I received my first draft, I was blown away, I have never read something so amazing about my self that was so honest and flattering. I t covered my weaknesses in a beautiful sentence, and reading it made me smile. They over hauled my LinkedIn and less than a month after I am writing this reveiw, proud and happy to say that I got an email requesting an interview from one of their talent hunters. I paid for the highest level of service and feel I got it, and more. Could not be happier. Well worth the money, every step of the way.

However, I find that a lot of people approach it from the standpoint of "unpaid work"; simply building up your resume and accumulating hours towards a specific career path. I think that sometimes people forget that it is possible to gear your volunteer hours towards your own interests. There is nothing that says that you can't have a kick ass time while gaining some valuable and marketable experience. All you really have to do is find something that jives with your passions, and a great way to do that is by going to Volunteer Calgary. So far, my experience with Volunteer Calgary has been limited to their website, but that's due to the fact that I've never felt the need to contact their offices; they make finding volunteer opportunities in Calgary and area literally as easy as a click of the mouse. Simply hit the large "Volunteer Opportunities" button on their homepage, and you're connected to a database where you can search openings at specific organizations, by area of interest, or by type of organization. These searches can be further broken down by age group, location, and level of commitment, etc. It's a great way to get information about what's going on in your community, as well as to connect with specific activities that suit your needs and desires. Once you find a posting that speaks to you - and they say a lot - just apply to the particulars in the "Contact" section and wait for someone to get back to you; simple as that. And don't forget that that's only one facet of this nonprofit; Volunteer Calgary also runs a number of different programs and works in conjunction with a vast network of member organizations.
