There was no "conversion talk" like other places. You can get a vegetarian lunch for free or almost nothing on Sundays. They do not ask you to spread the word of Krishna if you eat there. All they ask is you help your fellow humans. I love places that do not try to convert you. I will definitely go back again. I think one of the devotees hit on me the last time I went there.....nothing like a little flirting with the Hare Krishna devotees....may be he can teach me how to do their dance... But seriously, this place brings calm and peace to my soul. I feel at peace as soon as I step in.....there were days when I just sat on the floor and read a book while watching the devotees sing and dance in prayer.

For several years I worked at a daytime shelter for homeless men and women on Chicago's south side…read more While there I was a Case Manager and Skilled Assessor, helping provide needed resources to people experiencing homelessness. We helped with daily needs like breakfast and lunch, shower facilities, toiletries, clothes etc...but by far what most people who came to us were seeking was permanent housing. The nuns of the Missionaries of Charity would often bring women who lived at their shelter for mothers to us for services. I was impressed by the love and care they showed to all their guests. Through the intercession of God several of the ladies the nuns brought to us were, in fact, matched to permanent supportive housing! I was happy to be included in the charitable work of these admirable servants of God. The Sisters of the Missionaries of Charity are a blessing in the lives of all they touch.

We donate to this maternity home. It's run by Mother Teresa's sisters. This place has a great…read moremission. Women who are pregnant and in need can come and live here at no cost. If they have kids who are already born, they can live here with their mom as well. I think women can stay up to one year after giving birth. It's a really simple place - no TVs, for example, which can be a shock to people! Stock up on some good books! But it's a loving, safe place. I read a Trib article on it a few years ago. It said that in one year, 40 women stayed there. Some of the sisters speak different languages, so even if a person doesn't know english, she still might find someone she can communicate with, which I would think would be very important.
