I had some amazing, compassionate theology teachers, and one who made me feel like I was going to hell because I wasn't Catholic. Ursuline does prepare you well for AP testing, but in some AP classes that have multiple teachers, how well you do depends almost entirely on which teacher you get as some prepare you better than others. However, the school places WAY too much emphasis on sports, and a lot of the funding is funneled into athletics. When I was there, I was a member of the Speech and Debate team. We got no attention or funding from the school, and it showed at competitions. I had to hire a separate, outside-of-school forensics coach just to know what I was doing. It was frankly embarrassing to go up against other prep schools like Hockaday and Parish, both of which had paid coaches and did very well, with no support from the school. It never really felt like a team as much as it did certain individuals (who were very good but had to figure it out for themselves with no coach) competing.

Coming out of Plano public schools, it was soooo refreshing to finally make some girl friends that are worth keeping (nothing against Plano, but I found my classmates to be a lot of things, but genuine was not one of them). I will have it be noted that it has been 7 years since I graduated and I still talk to my 5 best friends from high school daily (via email.. but it still counts). Friends like that are a rare find and worth every penny my precious parents spent on my tuition here. A few months ago, I went to a dinner for Bay Area Alumnae. It was so fun to see generations of UA girls and get together to hear about what is new at the school. I am really hoping to be able to do it again soon. It sounds like some major renovations are happening and it is so exciting to see our beautiful campus being so nicely maintained. Not only did I make lifelong friends here, but I received a great education and learned to be a confident and competent woman. As a parent, that is all you can ask for!

This mix is unique, you won't find it at other schools. The social skills and friendships formed are as impressive as the academics. Speaking of that, The Dallas Morning News recently published that Woodrow is #1 in academic gains in Dallas. The school was redesigned three years ago into four college prep academies which offer AP and IB (International Baccalaureate). Woodrow and its feeder, J. L. Long Middle School, are the only two IB schools in Dallas. Transfers for those out of the attendance zone are available with applications starting in January. Unlike DISD magnets, Woodrow offers the full range of athletic and extracurricular activities. It is the quintessential American high school experience. The Lakewood area is a bit like a small town and many generations have attended the school resulting in many traditions and an extensive alumni network. My only gripe would be that the principal, going into his third year, is a little to strict on spirit and pep rallies. He does attend most sporting events, however. Unless your family has the resources to donate large sums of money, the "right" race, or gain favor through employment at the school, you are just a number--tolerated, but never truly included. The school's values are less about Christ and more about class and elitism. A tight-knit inner circle of donors, board members, and influential families call the shots. Everyone else is kept in their place. Diversity at Dallas Christian is performative at best. Minority students are rarely visible outside of athletic teams, and there is a pattern of recruitment that raises serious ethical questions. These students are valued for what they can do on the field or court--not who they are. And yes, there have been documented and disturbing instances where students of color have been called racial slurs, including the N-word, by both peers and staff. Consequences for these actions have been minimal, and accountability is nonexistent. The emotional toll is real. Kids who start off confident and engaged quickly become withdrawn, questioning their worth in an environment that measures value by status. The self-esteem damage lingers long after. Many of the glowing reviews online are not from impartial voices--they are parents on the board, major donors, or paid reviewers. Don't be misled by the marketing or manufactured praise. The reality inside is far different. Meanwhile, families who experience harm are pushed out quietly, without support, and without acknowledgment. Even staff members who happen to be minorities are part of the same exclusionary system--and they know it. There is no safe space here, only a well-oiled machine that rewards compliance and marginalizes difference. If your family doesn't "fit" their mold--racially, politically, or socially--you will be pushed out, one way or another. The environment is not just biased, it is hostile. And they'll use your tuition to do it. With the rise of school vouchers, this kind of systemic discrimination is only going to get easier to hide. If you are a minority family, a values-driven family, or seeking real faith-based education--run. Don't be fooled by the brochures. The truth is much uglier.

Bending Oaks help save my son. He is an amazing, intelligent kid who was miserable as a sophomore at Southlake Carroll High School. After years of believing Carroll was the best we realized a change had to be made. As Jane T. and Carrie C. suggest, we interviewed, visited and "test drove" the school and my son made the most difficult decision to leave his friends and commute 60 miles each day to Bending Oaks. He has not regretted the decision and nor have we. My Son feels Bending Oaks, help change his life. I agree Bending Oaks is not for everyone and as we found out, neither is Southlake Carroll. With any private school a parent and student should find the best match. I like to describe Bending Oaks as a Dot Com and other traditional schools as big corporations. There is a mutual respect between the "management" and "individual contributors" and all are invested in the success of the school. The proof of Bending Oaks' is in my son. He was a child full of life who completely lost his spark and regained it at Bending Oaks. As a sophomore at Carroll we were afraid he wouldn't graduate. He is a senior now with a great ACT score and has 100% college acceptances one is San Diego State University. SDSU is the most desired and impacted California State University with an acceptance rate of 36%. We are so very proud of our son and so very thankful to Bending Oaks. I find the reviews by Jane T. and Carrie C. not only insulting to the teachers and staff of Bending Oaks but also to the parents and students who trust Bending Oaks every day.
