Decided to try this spot during Restaurant Week and we were pleasantly surprised. Fresh margaritas (not that fake pre-made stuff), pastelitos perfectly fried (not greasy), and a platter of mixed grilled meats and other delicacies. Truly, hard to imagine this place isn't packed all the time! If you haven't had Venezuelan food, you really need to try this spot. Cachapa is the corn pancake you never knew you were missing! Sabor Caribe was on the list to visit. It is advertised as a mixed Caribbean and Venezuelan restaurant. There are about 4 parking spots in the front of the restaurant. Per owner, there are parking spots in the back. There are other parking lots that you can park at, but it's like a block away. Upon entrance, there are about 8 tables inside. There is also patio seating outdoors that is covered. FOOD: Sampler Plate (3/5, Combination of 2 each of empanadas, arepas (per owner, this is like a pastry "pop"), patacones, and pastelitos): Empanada: These were good, simple chicken empanadas. They are savory corn turnovers filled with various ingredients. Arepa: Arepas are a grilled corn pocket with various ingredients. I didn't want to get the arepa dishes because they were a bit pricy for one. I did not think these were in the sampler; however, they are the circular pastries, slightly sweet with a cinnamon twist. Patacones: These were two quarter-sized bites of the chicken patacones, which did not do justice. I highly recommend getting the plate. Pastelito: I thought the pastelitos were the cinnamon pastries at first. However, these are the circular turnovers that had a spoonful of beef in them. Patacones Plate (5/5, Two fried plantain sandwiches with chicken and pork with cabbage, tomatoes, and cheddar cheese): If I had to explain this, this is like a burger with plantain as the buns. It is so good with the two sauces they have: cilantro green sauce and spicy orange sauce. I tried the chicken and pork, which had good flavor. You also have the option of black beans or beef. The service is good. The food comes out in a timely manner. The water never touched bottom. They also advertise a karaoke room here! Would I come back? I enjoyed the Patacones plate. What brought us in were the 2 for $9 margaritas, and they WERE good, available in many flavors. The service this Saturday afternoon was not great, really slow. There was only one server on the floor, but I felt like the issue was really in the back of the house. The ambiance is nearly nonexistent. However, the food and drinks we tried were very enjoyable. My husband ordered some chicken pastelitos, followed by this monstrosity of a heart attack burger called the Bomba B. It is stacked high with a variety of meats and a fried egg. He declared it delicious and actually finished it, but didn't touch the mountain of fries it came with. This was a real bargain at just over $15. I had a black bean arepa and fried yucca. The flavors of the arepa were good, but this is not finger food and nearly impossible to cut with a knife given it is served in a plastic basket. The yucca was, sadly, clearly massed produced for the freezer. They were more like yucca fries, starchy and disappointing. We might return, but with a fresh insight as to what to expect. read more

This place is a cute hole in the walk downtown with a nice clean cafe type vibe. The service was great, we were seated quick and served pretty fast. We had the Cuban sandwich--doesn't taste identical to back home but pretty close and it's delicious. Their black beans are very flavorful and we liked the Pastelitos with both chicken and beef. Decided to kick off my weekend by trying out this spot. I've seen several Instagram posts and added it to my list of places to check out. It was a last-minute call at the end of my work day, and im happy I followed through. We chose to park around back and entered via the stairs, which were a little slippery due to the weather. Music is blasting from outdoor speakers as you walk up. Our timing was great as there were only two occupied tables at our arrival, but this ch aged within the next 30 minutes. Waitress was super helpful in recommending the sampler platter. Venezuelan travel ($20.80) : beef epanada, chicken arepa , chicken cachapa, and chicken Patagonia with a side of Yucca fries. I couldn't pass up the XL passion fruit margarita I've seen on numerous IG reels. Latin music plays throughout the restaurant while you eat. Be sure to grab some of the green and red sauces; they taste mayo based- the green is an herby cilantro concoction. The red has some legitimate heat to it. Perfect compliment to the yucca fries. As for the burger, we'll, dang. Beef patty, fried egg, bacon, ham, pulled pork, tomato, cabbage slaw, maybe some potato strings, and the above mentioned mayo-based sauce. A pleasant buttery flavor kind of tied everything together. Much different, and with good effect, that any other burger I've had in town. Love this place so much! Honestly, I personally think it's a must-try when you're in Memphis (especially if you're gluten free). My two favorite arepas are the brunette, and the pork! A friend had shared a super large margarita from this place's IG page and we went after a long week at work lol. Though it was cold, we could see outside seating space for warmer months and I'm geeked to come back. Is kinda small inside, but we were early enough to grab a table with no problem and there was self seating. The server was really nice, she was patient with us as we were undecided and she made good suggestions on the menu. We had the passion fruit margarita which was fruity, sweet, and enough alcohol and the combination food plate with had an empanada, arepa, tostones dish, and one that resembled a pancake. She recommended this so next time we would know what we like which was a good idea! The arepa, empanada, and tostones were my favorites! They have a mild and spicy sauce for the table I could tell the mild one was full of cilantro by how it looked and I was happy because I love cilantro lol. Overall the service, food, and environment are great and I'll be back. They have limited parking in the front and more spaces on the back, you will have to climb stairs to enter from the back parking lot. Sabor Caribe is an authentic Venezuelan restaurant located in the medical district. The food is delicious and the service is warm, friendly, and helpful! This was my first time trying Venezuelan food and my waitress was super helpful in assisting me in picking my food. She recommended the arepas and fresh passion fruit juice to drink and I'm so glad she did! All of my food was cooked fresh to order, flavorful, amd filling! The arepas had the perfect amount of crunch and softness reminding me of one of my favorite southern things, hot water cornbread! Every bite was filled with meat, avocado, cheese, and goodness! I ordered a chicken arepa and shrimp arepa! I tried my best to eat both but it was so much food that I eventually just had to pack it up to take home! Authentic Venezuelan food in Memphis, Tennessee. My wife is from Venezuela and I met and married her there 25 years ago,eating at Sabor Caribe took me back. The experience started when we first arrived, the entrance is painted with the same bright yellow color as the typical houses in the Andean town of Merida. We entered and the restaurant was empty, so my wife and I got a little scared. Anyway we stayed and I am glad we did. food was amazing and PLENTIFUL. We started by ordering the Super Sampler Plate, more than enough for 2, 3 or 4, and has the best typical fritters Venezuela has to offer, try them all-Yummy. They bring a pink sauce and a green sauce to dip, the pink is a little hot, but not to bad and the green is creamy and garlicky, both amazing, I combined both and my own, but I am weird like that. For dinner we ordered the Mix-Grill that had grilled chicken, beef, spanish chorizo, yuca fries, arepas, tomato and avocado salad and white cheese, or queso guayanes, which is a hard, salty cheese, that tastes amazing, dont forget to use the sauce. This plate could feed 3-4 people easy. Loved the place, the food the owners, nice reaggeton music playing and Spanish discussions going on in the kitchen, loved it. If you are in Memphis, a must try. By the way the Madison Shuttle (Memphis Trolley) passes right in front of the restaurant in between Danny Thomas BLVD and Orleans Avenue. read more

A MUST-TRY! I've been here twice now. And both times I've left with a wonderful experience! The first time I went I wasn't sure what I wanted, so I got the Travel Plate, which allows you to try a little bit of everything. The flavors are unexplainable, and the sauces you can have with it are to die for! I left this experience absolutely loving the plantain sandwiches the most. There is something about their chicken that is so moist and juicy, when combined with their ingredients in the plantain sandwich that keeps me coming back for me. The second time I visited, I also organized a surprise birthday party. The organization and the outcome of the party was perfect. You can have up to 20 people in their private room. However, after 10 an order must be placed in advance. Everyone's order was perfect, all thanks to the manager of the restaurant. SHE IS AMAZING! Amazing food. I tried them as a part of the Downtown Dining event that Memphis has every year. I had the Venezuelan Travel Plate (pork arepa, beef patacon, black bean empanada and cachapa) with a papaya caramel dessert. A ridiculous amount of food. But so good. There was a sign for parking in back, but its only accessible from one side. Inside is a pretty barebones set up (But it is clean). Regular tables and chairs, not much decor. The menu has good looking offerings, but mostly the same stuff, but presented differently (pork inside plantains, pork in corn shell, etc.). THE FOOD: I ordered a combo type dish which had an arepa, a patacone, a corn pancake with cheese inside and on top, and I think an empanada. The corn pancake was delicious..sweet, cheesy, almost dessert-like. The arepa and patacone were kind of similar tasting. I was more bummed when I took one bite, tasted how good it was, looked back at the empanada, and realized the rest of it was empty. Saw this place advertising for 901 day, checked out the instagram and man is putting in the work on there! Everything looked so good we had to check it out. I got the Pabellón Arepa (by recommendation from the waitress) and my boyfriend got the Cachapas. We have never had Venezuelan food before but would definitely recommend to anyone looking for good eats. Also had the empanada, tequeños, pastelitos, and brunette arepa in a sampler platter and was very impressed. We got margaritas (passion fruit and mango) and liked them.
