I don't believe I want to buy meat from any other place. I like the idea of eating animals who were healthy, dispatched humanely and quickly, a prayer said over them acknowledging the respect for one giving a life to sustain a life. The employees are so nice and helpful and when they found out it was my first time they walked me through everything and were very generous. I am blown away by the prices too. The chicken I got for Thanksgiving was delicious, brined for two days and baked with a compound butter under the skin... best tasting chicken I've had in ages. I also had two quail which I will get again. I love them tasty little birds!! Great fresh vegetables here too, lots of fresh eggs as well as cuts of meat and offal you don't get elsewhere. I love being able to get fresh meat locally. Over the years I've gotten chicken, duck, rabbit (I tanned the hide), quail, squab and more. They also carry some veggies that are rare to find in chain stores like okra. The service is always impressively fast. Parking can be a challenge though. That's the only negative for me. read more

Everything inside looks delicious! Fresh fresh meat you can't get anywhere else. A hidden gem! Love getting fresh chickens at this spot. They have deals on Thursdays. Upon entering it does not smell bad like some other meat Department. Everything looks pretty sanitized. The whole goat and lamb looks amazing behind the glass! : ) Service is a bit slow due to customers requesting fresh meat, I guess? I usually just buy chicken but wanna try their lamb/goats next time. It takes another Cantonese to understand a Cantonese's frustration that she (me) can no longer find the chicken that's good for white cut chicken/poached chicken (think Hainanese chicken). Even worse, the anger was accumulated to a point that ones from my Cantonese grocer, chicken grocer in SF chinatown and Weee are all under-age ones. For our standard, a chicken that's raised under 150 days are not flavorful enough. This is how I ended up at Saba. The meat hanging quarter speaks for itself. The line was pretty long for a Saturday morning so you may want to consider going on the weekdays. I got 2x $17 older chicken and cooked 1 of them the same night. Juice, chewy meat with exceptional chicken fat on the skin. Both my mom and I (it was a field trip for both of us) are happy with it. You see all sorts of people there. Mexican, African-American, Middle Easterns and Chinese/Asian. If you don't care much about the meat, you won't wait in line to pay for it, get the number then wait in line to get the meat again. The smell is not very pleasant here but for an immigrant like me, it's ok. The owner (grandpa looking) came out to deal with the broken credit card machine. While I was waiting for my chicken outside, I saw him and asked if they sell the goat with skins on it (goat with skin stew is a Cantonese winter delicacy). I think he said yes but later I figured maybe only when I buy an entire goat. I can't eat an entire goat but am one happy Cantonese chicken eater. read more

Saba Live Poultry is for those that want to be able to get their meats super fresh. Nothing here is frozen. The animals are literally right there staring at you and waiting for their inevitable fate. I've seen rabbits, black chickens (whose meat and eggs are also black), ducks, quails, turkeys, and several other bird species. It's birds gone wild up in here... and what's interesting is that the lines are super long with customers. That alone surprised me... people want those exotic birds on their plates. Wow. So we've purchased chickens from here before and lamb... and they were quite good, but overpriced. They charged us around $15 per chicken. I could have just went to Safeway and for that price probably gotten three organic chickens... and lines out the door. But I believe they are all prepared halal so maybe that has something to do with it, plus we aren't here very often. Service here is ok, it's just speedy like an assembly line, and you need to know what you're getting by the time you get up there or you will get a slight attitude by the person behind the counter. In their defense, you have been waiting like 30-40 minutes in line by the time you get up there, so I don't blame them for getting a bit aggravated, plus signs which display the pictures of the animals and prices are right there on the wall. Waited over 50 minutes to get 3 chicken while everyone that came after me got their. Did even tell people that machine to help de-feather chicken was broken so I could have come back later when it fix to buy the chicken. My go to place to get fresh meat. They are so fresh, the chickens don't have that typical smell other chickens have. They cut and clean it for you too. They also have whole lamb. The prices are probably cheapest in the Bay Area. Wait time for me has been between 10 mins and 40 mins. 40 mins was Christmas Day which is understandable. All the employees are very friendly. They are quick at the same time courteous. The street is always full of cars, but I have always managed to find a spot. Downfall is that it is a few cities away from me, but that won't stop me from continuing to go. Highly recommend them. read more

This place is a lie. Typically, I would support halal businesses but this place merely fools customers into believing that. The chickens and poultry here are kept in unbearably cramped conditions. They are not being free ranged or living in open pastures. They are suffering! They have a variety of animals such as bunnies, pigeons, ducks and occasionally goat and lamb. I came here out of curiosity. I did not know such places exist in the Bay Area but it appears Saba Live Poultry is a business that runs in more than one location. They were shockingly busy and had many customers from different ethnic backgrounds. I understand most people eat meat and some prefer freshly butchered which is no problem. The thing that upsets me is how terrible the animals are kept. They are slaughtered in front of each other. Death can be heard throughout the building. The chickens were panting of thirst and had no visible access to water. They had hundreds live poultry in crates stacked on top of each other. My heart broke for them. It would have been better to end their suffering than leave them in such unbearable living quarters. This does not count as halal -- there is nothing humane about how the poultry and livestock is kept. I am not kidding. You can visit and see for yourself. A note to the to the owners of this business: PLEASE PROVIDE BETTER LIVING CONDITIONS FOR YOUR BIRDS WHILE THEY ARE STILL ALIVE. read more
