If you're looking for a good pub, it doesn't get much better than this…read more Lovingly called simply "The Axe" by locals, this pub is in a different league to most other rural pubs. I'll explain why and try to be concise. The cuisine is exceptional. There's a good selection of quality drinks. The service is excellent. The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming -- the sort of place where complete strangers tend to strike-up conversation. The location is perfect, overlooking the Village Green, with a big beer garden behind, and a vast playing field behind that. It's a lovely village, nestled in the gently-undulating farming landscape of rural north-east Herts -- no wonder Braughing was recently awarded the prestigious "Village of the Year" accolade. The pub's menu always includes the best of local produce, from locally-reared beef to local pork sausages, alongside popular country pub dishes. (Braughing village is famous for, among other things, the delicious local sausages, and this is a good place to sample them.) Did I mention the pies? A different pie every day it seems, and you won't find better pies than these. I don't make a statement like that lightly.

This place isn't a corporate-type chain, but a wooden-beamed, crooked doorways, real, actual pub. Some reasons to love it: 1. Chequers is so cozy. There is a big fireplace and soft cushy chairs and sofas to lounge in. Even the dining room is warm and friendly and feels more like your grandma's house than a pub. 2. The menu. It is fabulous. There are a few favourites that you can always get, but there are always new dishes as well. They also have a vegetarian AND vegan menu--vegan friendly meals seem to be a rarity and I was impressed to find so many options. I've tried many different meals here and have never once had one that I didn't like! On the one occasion I wasn't keen on the options, they offered to make me something else. 3. The game room. Next to the bar is a small room packed with books, cards and board games. I'm a big-time sucker for a good board game and have wasted many an hour playing Scrabble in here. Everything about Chequers is welcoming and we're always happy to go back. Even my dog is welcomed with a bigh dish of water and last time was personally greeted by the owner. Definitely a winner for me!

The pub is beautiful and cosy, the landlady was kind and cheerful and the food.....oh god, the food! We both had a starter of pigeon, not something you usually see on a pub menu and it was superbly cooked and tasted amazing. For my main I chose the steak burger with chips and onion rings, the burger was big, flavoursome and juicy and the touch I like is that the tomato ketchup on table was all homemade, not from a bottle! We will certainly come back to this awesome place if we are ever near the area again because it was outstanding!!

*GUSHGUSHGUSHGUSHGUSH!!!*…read more I can't say enough wonderful things about this pub. This five stars is 90% based on the food. Best pub food ever! First of all, there are 5 or 6 veggie options on the menu, which is a rarity. Some of their options are a mushroom stroganoff, vegetables au gratin, ploughman's sandwich, and a mediterranean pasta. My husband had veggie lasagna which was served with chips and salad. I had vegetables au gratin - broccoli, carrots, aubergines (eggplant to my american friends), bell peppers and onions, drowning in a rich cheese sauce topped with breadcrumbs. Heaven in a bowl!! There was a lovely salad on the side along with a generous portion of coleslaw. There's a nice selection of homemade desserts as well, which seem to change every week. We sampled the almond cheesecake which was amazingly delish. Aside from excellent food, there is good selection of beers. The manager is a super friendly guy who remembers us every time and always stops to have a chat. There's a cool layout with the bar in the entrance and two rooms off to either side. There's plenty of room for groups, however it's still small enough to feel cozy. Lots of outdoor seating as well. The White Hart is now a weekly trip for us!

We both chose the chicken, spinach an mushroom pie from the specials board. There was also quite good new potatoes (nice alternative choice from chips, they also had mashed) and the vegetable side was a veritable garden. Green beans, broccoli, peas and carrots - all in a portion size that would have sufficed alone. The tomato basil soup starter was delicious. We were unfortunately too full to partake of any of the yummy sounding desserts. Service was friendly and location is quaint-true locals type of place we go out of our way to find.

There is also a lovely play area for children. We ordered food and was told that the food would take an hour and a half (they weren't joking) on their menu it states 'we don't make fast food, we make good food' something like that, well boy was that far from the truth. We ordered: Onion rings, garlic bread, breaded mushrooms, potato skins, tuna sandwich, and a burger. Garlic bread was awful it was a baguette with loaded cheese, the tuna sandwich was also awful. All that food came to £40. This pub got 3 stars just because of the location and the outdoor seating and even that is generous. There are much better pubs that have a good garden.

The King and Tinker is a very old pub (the oldest in Enfield, apparently) situated in a rural…read morelocation by White Webbs Park. It is in the London Borough of Enfield, not far from the border with Hertfordshire, but you wouldn't think you were anywhere near London. We'd passed the pub a number of times before while out walking but yesterday decided to stop for a drink and something to eat. We had a hot salt beef sandwich (a pub speciality) and poached fish of the day. Both meals were good. I also had a pint of Hobgoblin ale (not great, but drinkable) and a second pint, of London Pride (very good). The staff were very polite, friendly and helpful. What I particularly liked about the King and Tinker was that it hadn't been modernised or made to seem fancy (the dreaded 'country pub & dining'). It was just how typical country pubs used to be, with photos and pictures of local interest on the wall, regulars sitting at the bar chatting with each other and the staff, and no piped music playing. It seemed like it was more or less the same as it would have been 30 or 40 years ago, except for the fact it offers a full food menu, which many pubs didn't in those days. We enjoyed our visit so much we made a note to come back again when out walking in the area.

The decor is nicely done and clean, with two warming fireplaces, very comfortable chairs and very welcoming people working there. There are three real ales - one guest local ale (currently Tring Blonde). Also Greene King London Glory and IPA. There is an impressive food menu with very tasty freshly cooked imaginative dishes on offer. There is a light-bite type daytime menu and an a la carte for the daytime and evening. The quality of the food is as good as a posh London restaurant, the fish & chips (triple cooked chips!) is a favourite, as is the flatbread pizza, the Candlestick burger and the beef & ale pie. Good deserts, great coffee machine too. Can't fault it. On a nice footpath walking route and stunning scenery round about just the sort of place you want to midpoint after a walk in the country.

This place is fantastic, easy walk from Dover Castle and just so happens to be Dovers oldest pub. The menu for lunch is small, feels like it's because they want to do things right. The fish and chips- highly recommend. However unless you are starving I recommend you split it with a friend. When we arrived we were immediately greeted, service was excellent. For families like us, they do have high chairs. They will take your order if you sit inside. There's also an outdoor garden however you need to come to the counter to order. Same with drinks. Each room has a lot of history. Take one look around and there's a lot going on. Apparently this location used to be a part of monastery and has evolved over the years now to a great pub. Each dish we enjoyed, the vegetarian linguine was fresh, chips were delicious and the fish was wonderful. If you're cruising in and need a place for a good meal not too far from the port or to Dover Castle- I recommend you swing on in. Highly casual so you can come as is or for special occasion.

We were there early evening and the place already had a buzz to it, they'd also had the Rubgy on earlier but was showing outside which was fantastic as you could then choose to go out and watch it or stay in and ignore it as you pleased. The side part of the building was constructed in the 15 hundreds. Small doorways are a real treat. We started with the Honey-baked whole camembert which was a real treat. Had two ales which hit the spot and then debated for a while with the great menu options. We went with the pie of the day which was very flavorful. Joined with fresh veggies and chips. The mustard to go with the chips hit harder than a pimps slap. The chicken sandwich my friend got was good. Chicken very crispy and joined with chips. I went with Gammon steak with peas and chips and it was a good pick. Then to close it up we went with several pudding options and tea to cap off a great meal. Will be sure to stop in again and if you are nearby think you should be sure to check this spot out too.
