If you're ever have the opportunity to visit Porto, Portugal, you're in for a real treat. Our short…read moretrip to Porto we ate at several very nice places and enjoyed lots of great wine. But by far our favorite evening was spent on the banks of the Duro river, drinking wine and ordering small plates of food at Wine Quay Bar. We got really lucky to get a primo spot overlooking the Douro at the wine bar; it was picture perfect. With the help of the server we ordered a Douro Valley wine - a dry, fruity white. It was tastilicious. This place had an all appetizer menu -- like tapas in Spain. We had olives, a sublime soft sheep's milk cheese, bread, sardines in tomato sauce and pigs feet ... indescribably succulent, all of it. This place is a no-brainer for some of the most amazing food and wine in one of the most beautiful places one could enjoy them.

Drinks: Thoughtful and well executed, though not mind blowing. Memorable enough, and among the better cocktails we had in Porto without being the best. Service: Really good. Attentive without overdoing it. Vibe: Feels like a neighborhood spot slightly off the main path. You'll walk a darker block or two to get there, but it pays off with a quieter, more local feel. What could be better: Cocktails don't quite reach standout territory. This isn't where you go for your top drink of the trip.

Orpheu offers one of the more memorable outdoor dining setups in Porto. The tables are arranged in…read morea very narrow pedestrian alley, wedged between buildings where foot traffic moves past you on both sides. It's tight and lively, but that's part of the charm -- the constant flow of people creates a bustling, energetic atmosphere that makes for excellent people-watching. We ordered the codfish bao, goat cheese with honey, and octopus. The codfish bao was a creative dish that worked surprisingly well. The soft bao bun contrasted nicely with the flaky bacalhau, giving the classic Portuguese ingredient a modern spin. The goat cheese with honey was simple but well balanced -- creamy and slightly tangy cheese paired with just the right amount of sweetness. The octopus was the highlight of the meal. Tender, well seasoned, and cooked exactly how octopus should be, with great flavour and texture. To drink, we had a dry white port, which paired nicely with the seafood and felt like the perfect Porto choice. Service was attentive and relaxed, with friendly banter that added to the casual atmosphere. Overall, Orpheu is less about space or quiet dining and more about soaking in the energy of Porto while enjoying well-executed food and drinks. If you like lively outdoor dining and a bit of urban theatre with your meal, it's a great place to stop.

If this is your taste, it's close to ideal. Drinks: Really solid classics. Precise, focused, no unnecessary flair. This is a bar that knows exactly what it's doing. Food: Charcuterie-driven and simple. Pairs well with the drinks without trying to compete. Vibe: Familiar and foreign at the same time. Tucked on a winding street just off the main flow, it feels hidden in plain sight. Small, intimate, a little artsy, with just two people running the whole room. What could be better: Not much. If anything, its size and pace won't work for groups or anyone looking for energy.

The interior looks like a quaint, old world, restaurant, but the atmosphere is more relaxed and friendly in a chill way! Food is lighter, international fare (onion bahjji, currywurst, falafel) while drinks menu, especially the beer, seems to be more of an extensive list. Owner's personal passion perhaps? Food was solid and everything was made in-house. Owner was very kind, originally from Germany who settled in Porto a while ago. They have flights, including one that's 15 euros where you let them know what you're looking for and they pick out the 3 bottles, which is very neat. I told them I was in Porto mainly to try Port wines, and didn't have much familiarity with other, non-fortified Portuguese wines, and would love an intro flight, but no roses. Got a mini-lesson in the wine regions of Portugal, along with a wonderful green wine, a great Duoro valley red, and a truly fantastic red from Alentejo, a wine region I had not previously heard of, but immediately went on my radar the rest of the trip. (They also sell bottles; I bought a bottle.) Note, they said they only guarantee they'll do flights (as opposed to full-priced full glass pours) after 4 pm, but if they aren't busy for the food lunch rush, they'll do them earlier in the day (on a rainy Thursday in January they were more than happy to.) Actually liked the place so much, I came back the next afternoon and had another glass of a different Alentejo red - they only had one open for tasting in the price range that fit the "intro"-priced wine flight, so I spent... I believe 11 euros on a glass of a fancier bottle they recommended. It was also quite good, though I think I actually preferred the first one. Also had one glass of a very reasonably priced tawny Port while I was there - they had several, but obviously, I was already well into my plan to taste Port directly from all of the nearby tasting rooms across the bridge, so I just picked one here. (Unsurprisingly, it was also quite good.) They do also sell food, but I can't comment on it. Great place for quick wine tasting, though.

Overall, a great experience. Originally found this via my Lonely Planet guidebook (yes, the…read morepaperback book, lol; old school, I know.) The space is upscale and has good air conditioning. I find the American country music playlist pretty amusing. The service is polite and the server spoke English well enough to explain where this wine came from, pairings for thiss and that wine, etc. I was only there for wine tastings, and maybe a snack to pair with. Good stuff overall. I love the menu! It's very explanatory; you could spent 30 minutes reading and absorbing some of the info about Portuguese wines, so definitely keep it after you order to browse and read. Pro tip: They have spit buckets. Ask for one and use it. Can taste more wines with less intoxication. Only miss was that they served me the aged white ports, which are chilled, a few minutes before the desert things that I was pairing them with. This let them warm up a bit before I could pair them with food, especially since I asked for small pours. Bathrooms: Spacious, bougie, clean, and functional.
