It's very a very special experience. On this night, we opted in for the Mexican restaurant choice and I will say they made the best ceviche I've ever tasted. All the flavors were there. We shared several dishes and everything was delicious. Another friend of mine is a member and invited me to join her and I can't wait to go back! You don't have to be a good bowler so everyone is welcome! It's a really great way to get out and have some fun with friends while meeting some awesome new people. The leagues regularly have a bunch of different teams to meet during and after bowling - the host some after bowling hangs complete with games. There's also trivia during bowling. Overall it's a really fun time and a great way to meet fun new people - give it a try next time they have registration open.

Well, know what you are paying for. the lanes turn on for 90 minutes. when times up, you're done. You will likely get 1 full game and an additional 3 frames. So you are basically paying 11 bucks for a single game. I saw no drink specials. every drink I bought was priced as was on the menu. Last time I was on a bowling league I was paying about 12 / week for 3 games. Everything else was as I expect for a typical bowling league.

One of my favorite things about our wonderful city of Boston is the abundance of active adults…read more Every day, I see more people running, biking or playing sports per capita than I have anywhere else. I am always quick to applaud the city and surrounding towns (way to go Cambridge and Somerville) for the wealth of outdoor activities, both solo and team-related, available to residents. One of my favorite such Boston-based young-people-centric outdoor activities is my weekly WAKA game at Roberto Clemente Field in the Fens. My team, the Electric Mayhem, has been together for years in the Ironsides League (there are several leagues in town), and through it I have met some of the nicest and most fun folks you can hope for. If anyone ever thinks that it's hard to make new friends, sign up for a WAKA team and you'll have a dozen new ones after a day. The Ironsides League (and I hear the same about the other ones) is just competitive enough to be fun. Teams have a vested interest in winning and playing hard, but not so much of an interest that folks get disgusted and enraged after a loss. Everyone's there to just play and have a good time. The leagues are all well-managed and that management leads to the quality of organization and general spirit of WAKA in Boston. So yeah, in short, get some comfy sneakers on and get to the field. It's game time.

The food, drinks, and live band also create the full experience. The non-special-event nights at the Fly are also fabulous. But it is usually one of the few places you can go to keep drinking after 2 AM so it's worth checking out after other places close. **Update**: it had been a few years, but about a week or two ago I was able to get into the place again after a messy night in Harvard Square and one too many Tasty Burgers. They still let you drink for free, which was great. I made some Harvard references and the club members seemed wary but OK with me being there.

There are just so many good things to say about this place that I'm not sure where to start…read more First, it is not a "shelter" in the typical sense of the word, and the staff and guests do not refer to it as a "shelter". They consider themselves a "community", and act as such. There are NO lines for anything at the WLP. The women are served their meals at their tables by volunteers, and their materials are bussed for them once they are done, unless they choose to self-bus. The food. Oh heavens! WLP prides itself on serving nourishing, FRESH food. Each meal will have all nutritional requirements met, and there is always a veggie option. We're not talking canned goods or sandwiches here, folks. No, this is chopped and diced fresh veggies, prime cut meats, the finest ingredients. If you're a good cook and after you've volunteered a few times, they are happy to let you get in the kitchen and help whip up stuff. The resident chef there, Gina, is wonderfully creative in the kitchen (and very nice), and from time to time, other professional chefs from local restaurants come in to put together a meal. The WLP isn't jsut a food place, although that's the highlight of the day. It also provides the women with full time advocacy support to help with finding housing, food, or other services. There is a computer room/resource room that the ladies may use. There is also a nap room where women can go to get sometimes some much needed rest, and also a quiet room for just some peace, solitude, and maybe reading or reflecting. Women are also able to get various toiletries and clothing that they may need. They may do their laundry and take showers. The Program Manager, Heather (also very, very nice and competent) has done a great job of making sure that there are interesting activities for guests if they choose to participate: yoga, painting, field trips, knitting, etc. Since the WLP is run as a "community", the staff are INCREDIBLY patient with the women, and if a guest is being disorderly or breaking a rule, she is not immediately tossed out, but is counseled and given more than one opportunity to redeem herself by correcting her behavior. Throwing someone out is a last option at the WLP. WLP treats its volunteers as the valuable commodity we are. We are appreciated, thanked, and made to feel a part of the "team". Added Perk: They also have really incredible volunteer thank you events! I enjoy volunteering here. I learn something new and meet new people each time I go. I don't have a lot of spare time to volunteer, but when I do, the WLP gets me all the time, every time. It's important to know that this place could not be so great without us- the community at large supporting it through donations, volunteering, contributions, etc. The staff, Regina, Linda, Joanna, Lauren, Linnie, and Cheryl are terrific- go meet them! This is just a wonderful, wonderful place. You will not leave here without your heart being touched in some way.

I've volunteered there many times, and the experience was wonderful. The staff is as open, kind and welcoming to volunteers as they are to their ladies. The ladies? Wow.
