It's clean, though the times I've been there there was the same woman, and I had more help from the customers I came across than from her. -- Okay, I recently came back, and there was a gentleman who helped me out in choosing the right salmon roe. Horrible customer service. Went in today to get an item in preparation to the new year. Got yelled at for not making the selection fast enough or for not agreeing with the rude help??? Still not sure. Oh well, maybe it's time someone reminded them they are no longer in their third world countries? On another occasion bought some of their pre-cooked food. "Is it fresh", I asked? "Yes, made today" was the answer. Got home to discover the food was covered with mold. In between, right where I couldn't see. Had to make the drive back to get my money back. Horrible. The funny part is that's exactly how it is back in mother Russia. Not coming back, just going to order online. Not worth the drive. And not worth the reminder of the Russian terrors. read more

Ever since my childhood next to the iron curtain, I've been searching for those elusive smells and textures of brown bread made by hardy folk in a land filled with pine forests and ten thousand lakes. It was a blisteringly gusty twilight and I was curb crawling the malls of Herndon searching for a bagel with lox... when I saw the words "Russian Gourmet" and pulled an o-turn into the parking spot. Inside, the shelves are well-stocked with pickled everything, instant everything, and drink everything. I wandered around enjoying the writing I couldn't read. I sniffed at the bread varieties and finally settled on Lithuanian (close but no cigar) after smelling and reading the label (made in New York by The Bread Company). As a perpetual Dane-spotter, I noticed that the only Nordic item was a can of smoked cod liver from Bornholm. I bought it. I stood at the counter admiring the sausages and other giant extruded meat products. I admired the caviar and looked at the prices. I asked about the jar marked $19.95 and was told, "the best one" (they have learned something about sales after all). This store is functional and the owners were this side of friendly. Absolutely a treasure. The proprietors are helpful (and occasionally a little stoic). The selection is great and reasonably priced. They obviously cater to the NoVA Russian community, but for everyone else it is a great treat to visit and shop for such delectables as smoked fish, caviar, Russian candies and cookies, as well as many kosher delicacies. read more

As a german immigrant with family who has lived in Russia for over 20 years (and both of my grandmas cook super russian foods) I was hoping to find something special here. Yes, there are definitely tons of authentic russian items. But everything is too expensive, in my opinion. Especially the things that were NOT imported. Like the Pelmeni (meat filled dumplings), for example - They are made in Brooklyn (not imported, probably because it's hard to import meats) and cost $7.50 for 500 grams. Way too expensive for something that was made three hours away! I was hoping to find a good deal there, but it's not really for me. For now I'll keep making the Pelmeni and Vareniki myself or rather wait for when I go back to Europe for a home visit, to get my hands on stuff like that. If you can't cook russian foods and don't get to travel, then this might be your place. Service - well, you might want to ask if you have a question. Europeans are not as crazy about customer service as the Americans are... I know so, I am one. Check it out if you're desperate for some russian foods. read more

I am happy to have found this place for some of my european essentials like Davidolf and Kronung Coffee in addition to some fine chocolate. The Deli is definately a winner here with premium imported fresh cuts. The salads....well some great - like the Beet Root Salad which I love..but the mushroom salad did dissapoint... Ah yes - the pickles selection is super good and varied. they have a small selection of wine and liquors from Russia..and Eastern Europe..which is always and added plus! read more

This small Russian store sells prepackaged items and freshly made Russian food. I recommend their sour cabbage, borscht, and sour cream. They don't always have borscht or the sour cabbage. Service is slow. They have a good size selection of imported Polish and Russian items including chocolates, condiments, beers, juice, etc. I am giving this place four stars based on the quality of the items I have purchased. The store itself rates more around a 3 star though. read more

They bake their own rye (Borodinsky) bread. The fresh bread was just awesome. They have a great Kvass from Canada (in the fridge), that's the best you can get just about anywhere this side of the Moskva river. If you don't know what Kvass is, it's a soft drink made from bread crumbs, yeast etc., in a process similar to how beer is made (maybe). Nice cold cuts, cheese and tasty delicacies. A bonus book section. The sales ladies are nice. read more

Stay away from this store. Every time I went there, they tried to rip me off. Once they pretended that their scanner didn't work, and charged me ridiculous amount for pelmeni. Last time they charged me $3 per pound more than the posted price for candy. I will never set my foot in this store, and I live in Herndon, If you want Russian food: Taste of Europe in Gaithersburg has excellent selection and prices. Troika Gastronom in Falls Church has excellent selection section, higher prices that Taste of Europe, but cheaper than Russian Gourmet. The European Delight in Rockville isn't bad either. read more

Is there anything more fun than two very serious stern Eastern European women running a store that does a great job representing Eastern Europe? (rhetorical, but the answer is No Way!) First off, this mall is absolutely amazing. As you pull in you first see KMart and Panera Bread in somewhat of a rundown mall. It doesn't scream park your car and come on in! Once you look past that, there are 15-20 local restaurants and shops from South American, Kabobs, and European to Indian, Pastries, and Italian. Really Amazing and all "Mom and Pop" shops. Awesome! Tonight I drove to this mall parked and tried to figure out where I haven't eaten, when I look up to see Russian Gourmet. read the Yelp reviews and had to stop in and say hello. When you walk in you notice the store is a pale white and and feels cold. It also looks very sparse but as you start shopping the amount of great things starts multiplying. Starting at a large shelf of European beers and wines, past the pickled foods and dried fish, and I arrive at the meat, cheese and fish counter. "Would you like to try something? You can try something but not everything!" So many cured meats and cheeses, but I saw my "something"! Head cheese. As she was cutting a slice for me I noticed blood sausage and she pointed out that they have blood sausage head cheese. Are you freaking kidding me? Even with the age difference I almost proposed!. I looked over at all the caviars, and started asking about them. Most were Salmon and in the 5-10 dollar range. I asked about Paddle fish and she said "you don't want it! It is very expensive-50 dollars for a little portion". I kept looking and came across this crazy pale orange jar and asked what it was. The ladies couldn't figure out how to tell me in English, when a customer pointed out that it was Cod eggs...OK so I have my beer and Cod eggs, just need my Russian rye bread. I have never had bread so heavy and dense. 13 lbs....Ok it was only about a pound but very dense. I don't know that I'd shop here every week but from the looks of the staples, its easy to see that many do. I had a pretty darn fun time.! read more

Yesterday was a really bad day, they did not have the kefir I was looking for and the lady working there could not understand and answer me. Unfortunately I also grabbed one of their meat pies and barely survived the night. I do not remember the last time I had food poisoning this bad. Decent selection representing majority of food items ex-USSR people would usually crave and that would normally be hard to find in regular supermarkets: e.g. buckwheat, sausages, pickled herring, traditional confections, salmon roe, dumplings, etc. Friendly staff, clean if a bit dated store. Great pastries (I had the farmers cheese and something else (?)) and fairly good selection of grocery foods. I also had the carrot salad; when I go back again it seems like it would go well with something with a light flavor. The farmer cheese was super sharp with a great,creamy flavor. Going by what other people had said about the pastries, the owners when I went pointed out to me which foods at the counter were fresh, so I guess it depends a lot on what you get and who you get it from. read more

Great store. Nice selection of Russian and Eastern European groceries plus Russian style salads and fresh made savories. They have great frozen pelmenis (pierogis) in many different types plus Russian ravioli. They have great sour creams and butters and even have good breads. The people working at this store are shady, on my first visit, my total came to $6 which I had cash for. Without even asking they assumed I was paying with a debit card and immediately mentioned there was a $10 minimum, which I can understand, but the fact is I was paying cash. I handed the cashier a $10 bill, she placed inside the register and quickly closed the register and said that she could not open the register, said to grab more items to equal the amount, I let this slide on my first visit, but I thought I give them another chance. Went back for a second visit, this time, same scenario. Very unacceptable, why are you ripping off your customers over a few dollars to lose them for a lifetime, won't be going there again. Great little store here. Very nice selection of sausages, salamis, smoked and pickled fish, caviar and roe, Russian dumplings, and all sorts of canned and jarred stuff. I don't know what most of it is so it's always fun to try something new. Prices are probably a tad on the high side but you can't get this stuff many places so it doesn't bother me. Worth checking out if you like to try new things, or if you like any of the things I mentioned above! read more

I pretty much threw everything away that I bought here. The borsch tastes sweet (which is bad for non-Ukranians out there). I don't know where they get their russian dumplings, but every brand they carry uses low-grade meat that tastes like cartilage and ligament. Prices are high, but that is actually true of all Russian grocery stores. However, for high prices, you expect high quality. read more

The woman who is at the register is a very rude woman. Is she the owner? No wonder the store never has any customers. She should go back to Russia with her nasty mouth. Last time I was there she was yaking to some other woman, and when I interrupted her to pay for a product, she told me that the product was outdated and she couldn't sell it and then took it from me and threw it in the trash. (The product was some herbs and the expiration date on the packaging was for 2013.) read more

Awful customer service! We have no other similar stores in the area (Herndon VA) and had to buy some of our favorite russian food there on few occasions but will never go back. Every time we went we had a pretty crappy experience with the rude attitude from behind the counter. Their customer service makes you mentally go back to the soviet times. Hello, we are in 2012 in the US now, change the attitude! On top of that some foods were plain spoiled / expired while they claimed that "everything is fresh in the store". We had to go back to return the inedible items that were expired and old and we are certainly never coming back. They clearly don't care about keeping their customers. Find another store! read more

My Belarus friend was bringing me chocolates from Belarus and told me where to get similar ones here....the Russian Gourmet store!.(My appetite for them was bigger than she could provide.) She kept bringing me things from the store and I wanted to go myself and get more... I first had the meat pastires and potato pastires and bought the shelved goods too. I love the unshelled pumpkin seeds, cookies, candies, have given the beers as presents, as well as come home with large bags of the small individual chocolates wrapped in the cutest decorative foil with bears, and squirrels on them. These are my favorites. When I first got the squirrel ones as a present (I do some wildlife rescue), I said Oh, it has squirrels in it.???. (I was joking).......to my friend who gave it to me........and she laughed and said.... it has NUTS in it...Squirrels like nuts! I love the lithuanian cheese - its wonderful and I have tried one of the "tortilini's packets in the frozen section and they were very nice - a much different taste than italian variety.. I am no expert on Eastern europe or Russian goods, but very nice store and I now go to Fairfax Store too. Lots of neat things in there. The heath section is very good too. Difficult to find items in there. read more
