I love rye bread, especially the sweet variety - which might be a bit tricky to find in Edinburgh. Sure, they do sell it in Peter's Yar, but I found a shop closer to me :)
It was a cold Wednesday afternoon and I was looking for lingonberry jam (as you do), and decided to pop into the Russian Baltic Food supermarket on Leith Walk to see if they have it. The surly girl behind the counter pointed out they only have cranberry sauce, so I looked at what else this shop has to offer.
Well, it is a pickle paradise! If you like gherkins, you will love this place. They have so many different jars of pickled gherkins and sauerkraut! Also on offer is a variety of polish food stuff.
I bought a sweet lithuanian dark rye bread - 600g pack for £2.50.
Not sure who was in charge of the shop window decor. It is covered with pictures of jars and crisp packets. Very unusual. Don't let this put you off though, you never know what you may find here..... read more
