Review Date: July 2009…read more This note is a testament to the real estate broker services Barry Newman provided to my daughter Tricia Lee, and to myself as a first time homebuyer's parent. We randomly encountered Barry as we searched real estate listings on the internet. Tricia was looking for her first home and with her apartment lease expiring in 3 months. We found that Barry made good use of internet access and advertising, as his name came up on numerous occasions, so we contacted him. I made a cold call to Barry on a Sunday afternoon, and asked if he could meet us that very same day. Tricia travels occasionally with her job, and is also in graduate school part time, so our opportunities for house hunting were limited. Though he was conducting his own open house, he promptly made an appointment with us that very afternoon at 4pm, and showed us a few townhomes in Northbrook Green. He was always available to show us a listing. Tricia was looking for something under $300K, and Barry gave us his full attention, though we know he has sold million dollar homes as well. He never once pressured Tricia to make an offer. We made the offers when we were comfortable. He always offered words of wisdom from the heart - be it about resale value, schools, neighborhoods, what he perceived to be good value, or an overpriced property. If we wanted to make a $228K offer on a $269K property, Barry did not try to talk us out of it. He would honor the ask ("his fiduciary responsibility to his client") and made sure the seller got our offer, and saw that a counter-offer was pursued. In the end, Barry helped Tricia close on the purchase of a new townhouse. He negotiated a price we are convinced we could not have gotten for ourselves, and he knew of the levers that were important to the builder in making those negotiations. I have bought and sold 3 homes, so I have an idea of what Barry did for us. The anecdotes mentioned speak to Barry as a true professional. He did his job, and he did it well. We also have found that Barry has a team of highly competent associates whom we utilized, including a home inspector, and a mortgage broker. We really needed competent people as Tricia executed an end-of-month closing within 12 days of committing to purchase. We have learned that if Barry makes a recommendation to us, we have to seriously consider it. Even if we might not agree on a point, Barry was professional about it, and would move on or work around it. In the end, what makes Barry special is that he is a good person, he is a fun person to do business with, he has principles and standards he upholds to, and he is committed to meeting the needs of his client. We all know brokers work for commission, but with Barry, you also know that it will take care of itself in due time, and the commision incentive does not drive any negative behaviors. We hope to utilize Barry's services again sometime in the future.

As a first time homebuyer, aspects of my townhome search - filtering search results, viewing…read moreproperties, and negotiating price - were at times overwhelming and stressful. Enter Barry Newman. Barry's expertise, business acumen, and recommendations as far as individuals who could help me successfully close on my property of interest in a tight 12 days were extremely sharp and helpful. He made a real effort to put himself into my shoes to help find the type of home I envisioned for myself and kept my priorities of location, home accommodations, and resale value at the top of mind. Barry is a "make it happen" type of broker. From my experience with closing on my townhome on an extremely aggressive timeline, I highly recommend him to anybody interested in buying or selling real estate. Without a doubt, I will be leveraging Barry's services for any future real estate endeavors I pursue.

Pam and Wendy did give us a significant amount of their time and energy over the months it took us to complete the purchase of our new home, which was greatly appreciated. That being said, due to circumstances that could and should have been avoided, we now find ourselves in a discouraging and extremely costly situation as we work through several issues that should have been identified through the home search, due diligence and inspection. We trusted the inspector Pam and Wendy recommended to us would be thorough with a critical focus on protecting us from major issues - this was clearly not the case, and the shortcomings of the inspection and related negotiations have left us having to pay tens of thousands of dollars out-of-pocket to remedy. On a related note, the 'experts' Pam and Wendy recommended during the inspection/attorney review period were equally poor, particularly a roofer that gave us an estimate for repairs that we now know was 95%+ underestimated (as proven by four subsequent estimates for the same work), and gave us a false sense of security in terms of what we had ahead of us. Maybe the most unsettling part of the experience in hindsight (which should have raised our flags in the moment) was when Pam and Wendy clearly put the best interest of the sellers ahead of ours (their client) in the context of pressuring us to sign the deal on a condensed timeline so the sellers would not have to relist the property. Finally, neither Pam nor Wendy made themselves or a legal representative available to represent us in person during our closing, and did not give us a heads up that we would be there alone, leaving us with a fairly sour taste on what should have been a celebratory day. Overall, as we continue to work through issues daily and try to recoup our losses, we do not feel our best interests were prioritized and feel the advice from Pam, Wendy and their recommended subject experts was critically underwhelming and insufficient.

Pam and Wendy differentiated themselves from the beginning because they knew the estimated costs of various projects, and where we would get a significant return on investment should we decide to sell our home in the future. We truly felt that they had our best interests in mind, and were always available to consult on various ideas. When we heard about a home coming on the market in Evanston, Pam did not hesitate to reach out to her contacts and ensure that we were the first people to get into see. Once we knew this was the home for us, Pam and Wendy knew how to navigate the negotiations with multiple offers, and her competitive yet sensible drive kept us calm and focused throughout the stressful process of buying a home in a pandemic. After the house was ours, Pam and Wendy's work did not end. They connected us with their favorite vendors for roofing, carpeting, lighting and more. They ensured we were connected with the best lawyer and loan-officer and were on-call to help us navigate several unforeseen circumstances throughout the process. We truly feel that our "forever home" today, would not have been ours without this incredible team of professionals assisting us throughout the process. We can't recommend them enough!
