The Broken Obelisk is an iconic sculpture sitting atop a reflecting pool. Six of these sculptures exist across the US and the one in Houston was dedicated to MLK at the request of John and Dominique de Menil in 1971. The Bird and The Bean…read more Love walking through the Cullen Sculpture Garden. It is free to visit on the grounds of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. My two favorite pieces are The Bird by Joan Miro and The Bean by Anish Kapoor. The Bean is really titled Cloud Column. It is a precursor piece to the Cloud Gate, "The Bean," in Chicago. It is lovingly referred to locally as "El Frijole," or "The Bean" in Spanish. I love looking at the reflections of these two pieces. "Adam" by Antoine Bourdelle is so much fun to photograph. Bourdelle was a student of Rodin and a teacher of Matisse and Giacometti. They are all represented in the sculpture garden. From generation to generation. Rodin has several pieces here. Once I sent a group of students on a scavenger hunt here to find "The Walking Man." They had to take a photo as proof. The problem? There was a fundraiser going on at the time. The solution? They explained the challenge to the staff and still were able to get their photos very discreetly. Alexander Calder's The Crab. Painted in Calder Red. Look closely to see the legs of the red-shelled spider crab. Love the playfulness of this sculpture. Tony Cragg. Frank Stella. Bryan Hunt. Joel Shapiro. So many amazing modern sculptors. Check out the calendar for events. Yoga. Zumba. Lion dancing. MFAH on the Move. A great place to enjoy art.

The garden is situated right next to the Kinder Building and Glassell School of Art at the MFAH, on the corner of Montrose and Bissonnet Streets. While located at a major intersection of the Museum District, it's tucked tastefully behind an unassuming wall, making it easy to miss while driving by but pleasantly tranquil while inside. The garden has a large number of contemporary and classical pieces by several notable 20th and 21st century artists, such as Louise Bourgeois and Henri Matisse. One of the most popular sculptures is the Cloud Column, a 30-foot reflective steel bean shaped column designed by Anish Kapoor, the same artist who created the famous Chicago bean. This sculpture is a fantastic center to take photos from any angle. The space is designed with a number of low walls to create a natural separation between the pieces but still making it easy for visitors to wander around without a defined path. The garden is completely free to visit and has a number of small tables to sit down, relax, and immerse yourself in the visual experience.

I liked how nobody came here because I was able to hear nature clearer. I've had no issues with any of these until recently. I am a woman. I decided to go and relax in the park by myself for the second time. The first time I came here a man parked his car and stared at me while I was sitting on the hill. I left quickly. Here's what happened the second time, about a couple weeks later: Thirty minutes into my sitting time an older man came and sat right next to me on a bench, which I thought was odd, so I just moved somewhere else. Why sit right next to me? This park is big. Then, a different man walking on the bayou kept staring at me but I had made myself comfortable on the grass and he left within a couple minutes. At this point I'm a little on edge and no longer relaxing, but I'm stubbornly committed to claiming this space instead of running away. I did end up leaving in quite a hurry because a THIRD different man (who I could clearly hear zooming down the street in a mobility scooter before reaching me) saw me, objectively slowed down, and did FIVE DOUBLE TAKES and was being so creepy!! All of these instances with different men happened within fifteen minutes. TLDR; If you are a woman and looking to relax in a park, I would not recommend this one for safety reasons.

This park is far away enough from Houston but still close enough for a day trip, which is what I did. It took me about 30 minutes to drive here from Sugar Land. As I approached the entrance gate, I saw that they had two lines of cars with gate booths, just like the national parks. A ranger came out to my car and I registered myself as a day visitor. A park map was given to me and off I went to explore! Brazos Bend SP is larger than I thought it would be. There was a large parking lot and a few trailheads not too far away from the entrance, but I decided to drive past it to the next lot. 2 miles on the road later, the next parking lot was equally large but with much less cars and visitors. There's an interpretive center that was closed when I went, but a water fountain was nearby where I refilled my water bottle. I ended up walking along a combination of trails to get a feel for the place. The trails are mostly flat with asphalt, dirt, and light gravel. The peacefulness of this park is what really convinced me of the gem that this place is. Along the way, I witnessed many birds, including several vulture roosts in the trees. I also saw the American alligator in a pond, which I viewed from a safe distance. It would be quite difficult to reach the river and the ponds because of the natural vegetation in the area, so there weren't any wild alligators on the trails. I didn't get the chance to fully explore this park, but I wouldn't mind returning here another day. The gift shop offers a variety of items to purchase and the rangers seemed knowledgeable about the history of the park. Overall, I enjoyed my time here!
