This land that would later pass to the Phelps family, who maintained the site as a public burying ground. For nearly a century, it remained an informal resting place, typical of 18th-century New England plots: irregular grave arrangements, portal-shaped headstones, and symbolic carvings like winged skulls and cherubs meant to guide the soul heavenward. In 1849, the cemetery was formally incorporated making it the first such cemetery in New London County, and it was expanded to reflect changing burial customs. Victorian-era sections introduced more orderly layouts and family plots, while later additions embraced the rural cemetery movement's emphasis on landscape and reflection. Today, the grounds span over 22 acres, with additional land across the street known as the West Grounds, once part of the Paffard farm. Despite being near US-1 and a Park and Ride parking lot, it was quiet and peaceful. Among those interred are sea captain Nathaniel Palmer, civil engineer George Washington Whistler, and a constellation of 20th-century artists and writers including Stephen Vincent Benét, James Merrill, and Eleanor Perenyi.
