There are very few things in this world that I love as much as RuPaul's Drag Race. It's the only reality TV I watch, and the only show that keeps me up late reading reviews and message boards and watching endless clips on YouTube. It's also the only thing I'm so obsessed with that I'll pay money to go to a fan convention. I've been to two of the three DragCons to date, both times with friends who flew in for the event. (I feel like there are as many casual Drag Race fans as there were undecided voters in the 2016 election.) The first DragCon was, in retrospect, magically intimate and easy to navigate. I met two of my favorite queens, Trixie Mattel and Latrice Royale, at relatively tame meet and greets with short lines. My friend Claire H. was staying with me (she came in from Chicago), and as a gift to both of us, she bought tickets to an Untucked meet and greet with Katya and Ginger Minj, capped at I think forty people. (There were obviously more people there, some of whom sneaked in without paying; one of these dudes stood directly next to Katya the whole time.) She also hot glued together a Comrade Kitty doll to give to Katya, which Katya proceeded to place on her tuck as she did a handstand split. I skipped last year's DragCon because I had no one to go with, but this year, my friends Mike K., Gino G., Viv G., and Daryll M. flew down from Seattle. Three of these superfans are from LA, but they all stayed with me and ignored all other friends and family because we were on a mission, and the mission was DragCon all day. Daryll and her sister made purple MAKE AMERICA FIERCE AGAIN hats, so we went in looking like a gay Asian Latino fusion tour group (I was the straight fifth wheel) looking to maximize on our two-day passes. On the second day, we were joined by another Drag Race fan we met on the train downtown. He was visiting from Ecuador and going solo, and we ended up spending the whole day with him. Drag really does bring people together. DragCon has apparently blown up since year one--we were not expecting these crowds. When we showed up on Saturday at 11, just an hour after opening, there was a line that might have been thousands of people deep, a thick rope of people winding around the convention center. It moved reasonably fast, but it still took over half an hour just to pick up our passes. We used this window to grab some food at the food trucks parked in front. (The next day, we packed lunch, because time was of the essence.) This was a packed, high energy event, the kind of thing I would usually hate, but I loved every minute of it. The people watching was amazing--so many fans in varying degrees of drag, not to mention the like hundred actual Drag Race contestants wandering through the halls. The main room was set up with rows and rows of booths, with vendors selling everything from fan art to cosmetics to Boobs For Queens. Several of the queens also had their own booths, where they did meet and greets. We spent most of our time in this main hall, with one jaunt to watch a panel on queer cartoonists (my friend MariNaomi was a panelist and got to hang out in the green room; I was seething with jealousy). With some strategizing, we were able to meet several of our favorite queens. There were some long-ass lines, but the only ones that were straight-up cut off by the time we got to them (VIPs had priority access) were Katya's and RuPaul's. The longest lines we stood in were for Sasha Velour and Valentina--I think two hours for Sasha, and more like three for Valentina--and since we were a big group, we were able to take turns standing in line so we all got to explore the rest of the convention, buying merch and even standing in shorter meet and greet lines in the meantime. Oddly, Shea Coulee's line was really manageable. (Do you all not love Shea? She and Sasha are my two favorites, and I think Shea's going to take the crown.) We also met and took pictures with Acid Betty, Nina Bonina Brown, Kennedy (in her long night of hookin' chicken drag!), Bob, Chi Chi, and Tatianna, and we cheat-met Kim Chi by dropping off a Korean pastry for her at the front of the line (we were going to ask her merch guys if we could give it to her, but when she heard that plastic wrap crackling she looked right at us and took her tribute, posing with it hanging out of her mouth). We also saw Mama Ru in the flesh, passing through Sasha's signing line. Everyone screamed when he walked by. We had a blast fanning out at DragCon and I'm going to lobby my friends to make the trip down every year. Next time, I'd be open to shelling out for the VIP pass, which comes with priority access to panels and some signing lines, as well as early Saturday-Sunday entry and a ticket to a Friday night preview event. I'll bet next year's will be a big one, what with Drag Race reaching season 10. I can't wait to see what sickening surprises Ru has stashed in her wig. read more

While I had a fantastic time, I was not impressed with how the panels and runway shows were handled. It's impossible to see all the panels or even more than 1 or 2 because they are scheduled at the same time. The queens had such long lines and sometimes disappeared for hours at a time. Also as a wheelchair user I was disappointed to see that if I wanted to join a competition on the runway there was no ramp or anyway to get up there. I am in love with my photo of the meet and greet with Ru but why wasn't she in. Quite a few of the queens walking around were very snotty and rude. I get that it's a long day and you are in drag but isn't that the point? The staff and security were all very nice and accommodating. I would go back, not all three days again but I would definitely return. read more

I'm so glad that an event like this exists. Thank you to RuPaul to have the chutzpah to be who you wanted to be. Look at what RuPaul has created. Industries, originality, artistry, and some fun wacky people who can let it all hang out. This event moved me. It was more than a convention. It is a tribe of people who except each other. Who love each other. Who don't judge. We are people that love colorful, wonderful, individuality. I'm a straight, married white girl. But I greatly support my LGBTQ communities, and I'm forever grateful to RuPaul and my husband for opening my eyes. I've got one thing to say....Moesha, moesha, moesha! read more

Lots of fun. Three stars as ticket price gets you into convention only. That's it. If you want to meet the Queens you have to pay a Meet & Greet fee which varies by Queen from 20 to 50 Dollars per person. We met another attendee in the Yvie Oddly Line who had Spent $3000 to meet Queens. YOWSER. No group rates. Parking was $25. Food choices limited but who goes to DragCon for the food. We met Yvie Oddly and Jada Essence Hall who were both gracious and kind. We did not pay for anybody else as we didn't think it was worth it. We did get to see many of them taking pictures though with other people who were willing to pay. VIP is worth it if you have budget for M&Gs as the line moves more quickly than General Admission. Otherwise, VIP Ticket not worth it. Lets you in one hour early but none of the Queens are there yet so you just end up walking around a bunch of empty booths. We went to Dragcon 2023. read more

Had a blast at my first Con EVER. I definitely recommend getting VIP otherwise expect to spend a lot of time waiting in line. The queens were super friendly, and many will take a photo or do an autograph for free. Can't wait to go back. read more

May 7, 2016, was my first time at DragCon and it will not be the last. I was completely star struck as Violet Chachki, Kim Chi, and Bob the Drag Queen casually walked by me on the main floor. I can't believe I was able to meet and interact with some of my favorite queens from RuPaul's Drag Race! The easiest and most efficient way to review my experience is a Pros/Cons list like Patricia D. so here we go: PROS -I was able to meet Trixie Mattel, Joslyn Fox, Katya, Chi Chi DeVayne, Cynthia Lee Fontaine, Pearl, Sharon Needles, Ivy Winters, Bob, Milk, Stacy Layne Matthews, Mimi Imfurst, Tyra Sanchez, Jiggly Caliente, Ginger Minj, Candice Cayne, Miss Fame, and Alyssa Edwards (I think I got them all) -I saw Chad Michaels, Latrice Royale, Violet Chachki, Courtney Act, Alaska, Raja, Michelle Visage, Thorgy Thor, Acid Betty, Max, Naomi Smalls, Robbie Turner, KimChi, Derrick Barry, Nebraska, Laila McQueen, India Farrah, Manilla Luzon, Jeffree Star, Naysha Lopez, Detox, Tatiana, Delta Work, Miss Kasha Davis, Darrien Lake, and SO many other queens I'm forgetting from a distance. -All of the merchandise I bought from a queen was signed by that queen. -Most of the drag queens are very personal and are worth waiting in line to meet them. -Everyone is super nice here! We are all friends. -They don't check your bags at the front, so BRING FOOD!! -Each queen had their own sharpies. -A lot of cool items to buy at vendor booths. -You will seriously meet more people than you could imagine! -WORTH THE MONEY! (I did one day admission and the ticket was $35) CONS -The food truck lines were OUT OF CONTROL. We waited an 1 hour and 1/2 to eat! And we started waiting at 3:30 for lunch. They closed the restaurant inside because they probably ran out of food. BRING YOUR OWN FOOD! -The lines for some of the queens were outrageous. We waited 2+ hours to meet Trixie. -The lines to meet the queens were not monitored well. People could easily cut in line! -The staff was a little pushy. Alyssa Edwards wanted to meet all of her fans that bought her merchandise, but the staff members were constantly rushing her to finish up. -Parking was $15 which is not THAT bad. -You had to buy merchandise to meet most of the queens. That pisses some people off, but I was totally fine with it. They have to make that money! Overall, it was an unforgettable experience. If you love Drag Race or drag in general, I would not miss this event!!! read more

Drag Con is a way for drag race veterans to make more money. I don't enjoy wandering around, looking at merchandise, buying stuff, and listen to empty discussions with no real intellectual content. My friend bought me a ticket, and that's the only reason I was there. That being said, I thought the dance floor and special events were fun! I love that RP is trying to bring drag into the mainstream, it helps with social acceptance. The family/children sections made me feel like we're really progressing. It was exciting to see the show's veterans and judges walking around. There are really some beautiful things about this idea. I love the television show, but the lines were long to see any of the queens, and I got bored real fast. read more

Gosh, my first dragcon was in NYC2019. I was super excited got up early to not miss anything. Well its not as big as it looks. I walked in and saw Darrien Lake, waved at her and she looked at me crazy, Vivacious had people take attenders to her stand somehow I ended up paying 10bucks for a picture I didn't want. No queen takes photos for free, not at least the ones I saw there. I paid 20dls for a M&G with Gia Gunn, there was no one there yet I had to wait in line to meet her because she was fixing her outfit, she never acknowledged us while we were standing in front of her. Cynthia Lee Fontaine's stand was empty as well, lol, when I tried buying a shirt I didn't want from her just to support, the guy said they will be back and they both walked away. They all seem so stuck up it crushed my dreams. Why would I pay over 40dls on merch for a photo when I can see them at my local bar, get a performance and a better attitude for free! read more

I'm a huge fan of RuPaul's Drag Race! Love the show. And so you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that RuPaul launched the very first drag convention in Los Angeles. I missed the first one in 2015, but attended the ones in 2016 and 2017. And I immediately noticed what many other people have noticed who have attended all three conventions: Drag Con is rapidly increasing in popularity every year. In only three years, the Drag Con attendance has tripled! RuPau'ls Drag Race and drag culture is becoming more mainstream, and as a result, they are gaining a larger, more diverse audience (from kids to adults, different ethnicities, etc.) That being said, I hope that in future installments of Drag Con, the organizers really think it out more carefully. Now that they are seeing how explosive and popular Drag Con has become, I hope they take the following into consideration when planning future Drag Cons. 1) The hallways on the second floor for the various drag queen panels were JAM PACKED. There were so many people in the second floor hallways that it created a lot of confusion and disorganization as to where the line started and where it ended. Even people with VIP badges had trouble finding where the VIP line started. There were so many people in the hallways that it created a true fire hazard. It took my friends and I minutes just to get back to the staircase and go back downstairs. By the second day, security had to make people wait downstairs before each panel in order to reduce the fire hazard in the hallways. The organizers should spread out the locations of the panels across the convention center so that the panel rooms are not literally next to each other. Packed hallways was a major complaint I heard from many people. 2) I also hope that the organizers find a better way to create waiting lines for the various drag queen booths. Again, lots of confusion as to where the lines started and where they ended. I thought the waiting lines would have been a lot clearer than they were in 2016, but I was wrong. Lots of people complained about the way the lines were organized. 3) No one should have to wait 4.5 hours to meet one drag queen. That is unfair and unacceptable. There has to be a more efficient way to get people in and out. That was another huge complaint that I heard from lots of people...especially since many of us were purchasing simple t-shirts for $25 just for the chance to meet our favorite drag queens...and in some cases, $40 for a t-shirt just for the opportunity to meet other drag queens. I waited 4.5 hours for one drag queen and missed out on two great panels I really wanted to see. After waiting for 4.5 hours, I lost interest and had no desire to stay for other panels and other drag queen meet and greets. People are spending a lot of money during the convention and they shouldn't have to wait hours to meet one drag queen. I would have rated Drag Con higher but the 2017 installment really tainted my experience and love for drag culture. I'm not sure if Drag Con 2018 will be worth it for me if things don't change. read more

Sooo disappointed. We came from TX bearing gifts for 8 of our favorite Queens. We are big fans of the show so not knowing what to expect, we purchased a Sat pass. Spent 2 1/2 hours in one line, moved to the next line and spent 4 1/2 hours in that line!! My daughter jumped out of line at one point and waited 1 hour for another Queen, then passed one in the hall and got a quick photo. 3 Queens in 8 hours!!! Didn't get chance to enjoy the panels at all or eat all day. Bought another pass for Sun. Ran to Katyas line only to be told after an hour that the limit was 200 for the day!! Goodbye.. jumped to Alaska's line, yeah, 2nd in line, waited 1 hr 45 min after being told she would be arriving no earlier than 12:30. Then, bam, Alaska would not be there at all!!! Goodbye... So unprofessional. We met Trinity, (lovely, beautiful, and her profrssional team) and the amazing Michelle Visage a sweetie, and the gracious Evie Oddly (who joyfully met us after hours). The only positives were the great dispositions and graciousness of Trinity, Brooke Lynn Hytes, Ariel Versace, Michelle Visage and the amazing Alyssa Edwards who stood in heels for 4 1/2 hours, no break to meet every one of the 500 or so fans. Wow. Katya, Naomi Smalls, Plastique limited their lines thereby preventing many fans from meeting them. Shame on them. Many fans were grumbling about being cut from lines or not being able to meet their favorites. We did however, manage to spend over $500 on tickets, mandatory meet and greet fees, and some merch only 2 waters, no food or other drink in that cost. So I guess no one will care that I wrote this.
