The general rule of thumb is that when you find an awesome fish and chip shop, you stick to it. I…read morecan tell you that my attachment to my local fish and chippery, Fish's in Teneriffe, might be a little unhealthy. And not just in the beer-battered kind of a way. It has gotten to a point where I turn my nose up and any other option for the combination of potatoes and barramundi. Now that's good fish and chips! Although I usually indulge in the takeaway variety, Fish's is also a restaurant and has a relaxed, family atmosphere. Along with the usual fish and chips, there are burgers, seafood platters, meals, mussels, oysters, prawns and calamari also on offer. If it comes from the ocean, chances are Fish's have it! And it's as fresh as fresh can be. If you are looking for somewhere to get excellent fresh prawns for Christmas or a BBQ, theirs come highly recommended by me! As does the cajun fish. I veered away from crumbed fish a little while ago and lashed out with the cajun (a big deal considering I'm a creature of habit) and it is awesome! For reasonable prices, Fish's offer huge portions of (in my opinion) the best fish and chips in Brisbane. The wait is never long and the food is fresh and delicious. Get to Teneriffe for a taste!

Awkward. This super chic grocer is up there for me. Head straight to the aisles of jams, chutneys, and other such condiments. Packaging branding heaven. I used to live across the road from James Street Market (and still visit frequently) and yes, it is as dangerous on your back pocket as you might imagine but let's break it down. For a slightly higher price you're selecting top quality produce, specialty cheeses, sweets and other accoutrements. You've got access to a patisserie (French Twist), a florist, a butcher, a fishery and sushi bar. The produce is always fresh and the ability to walk out empty handed? Extremely difficult. Case in point: a friend and I were recently on the hunt for salted caramel for a cheesecake. Sure, we could have made it from scratch (and normally we might have) but to put it bluntly "Ain't no body got time for that!". We'd hunted a few different specialty stores we thought would be on the money but it was James Street Markets that came through with the goods. The staff member that looked after us found it on the shelf with such air and grace. There was no trouble for her to point us in the direction of the jar that held our salted caramel dreams.

You can usually pick up a few unusual mushroom types at Fine Fruit On James - enokis, King Oysters, wood-ear mushrooms but Asian supermarkets usually cover the same range. I repeat, it is their cheeses which stand out against their competitors. They have everything from camembert in the Adelaide Hills to Spanish manchengo. I became a goats' cheese convert after sampling their 'Lingot Chevre De Pelussin'. They also stock a decent range of gourmet deli products such as ice creams, pates, dips, oils, sauces and vinaigrettes. For an indulgent grocery shopping experience, Fine Fruit On James is the place to go.

It has all the market staples with food dominating, but clothes, home wares, kitchenware also featuring. The food stalls include produce from quite a few local growers including some organic ones, so you know the freshness is guaranteed. One thing that they do perhaps a little better than West End is live music. The organisers arrange a different group each week, with genres including from Jazz and Latin, so you aren't subject to the vicissitudes of the busker. The markets go until about 1pm but it's best to arrive early. Which means you will be there for your first weekend coffee. There are a few stalls doing good quality espresso, and my favourite is Bunker Coffee, who also have a small outlet in Milton.

Yet somewhere along the time-space continuum my Saturday mornings took a turn towards domesticity and became more about getting up early and getting sh*t done including visiting the markets for fresh fruit and veg. The Village Markets at Kelvin Grove are my preferred market destination. Not because they have the best range of produce (it's good and ample but there are better around) but because even when in peak hour you still feel like you have space to move as you walk up and down the walkway. Other more notorious markets in Brisbane have downsized leaving it near impossible to pass through the walkways without feeling like you're the newest sardine in the tin. Ney, Saturday morning market visits are for leisurely strolls up and down looking at each stall, coffee in hand (preferable from Rooster - formerly Bunker Stand). Once caffeinated take your pick from fresh produce, hand made yoghurts, a bunch of flowers for your beloved or for yourself.

I love getting a nice cold drink from the Lime man - all his products are Lime based. He sells amazing Lime cordial to take home - remember to bring my your glass bottle when you're finished and get $1 off your next bottle. He also sells Lime salt which is delicious on avocado, or to rim your margarita glass with. There's a couple of different German Sausage stalls to pick from, if you like a good german sausage and sauerkraut. The one up in the middle of the markets (just off the little side street) sells you the sausage cut up on a plate as an option, instead of in a bun - so good for people like me who want to limit their bread intact. There's also dumplings and waffles and crepes and coffee stalls, so don't eat breakfast before you come. There are plenty of delicious bakeries that sell organic bread, spelt bread, sourdough and other types of bread. There is also a man selling heavily discounted cheese that is close to the Best Before date (but still is good for a bit longer) so you can pick up some bargain cheese. There are heaps of fresh produce stalls selling fruit and vegetables. There's a stall that just does apples and has about half a dozen different types of apple (with sample and tasters available) and they also do amazing cloudy apple juice. Don't be put off by the fishy smell - there is a fish monger at the back of the store where you can get fresh seafood - I have never had a bad experience buying my seafood here. They sell a variety of seafood including fresh fish, live mud crabs, mussels, prawns and squid. You can buy the fish whole or pre-cut, if you do buy a whole fish you can ask them to fillet and skin it while you wait. You can pick up bunches of fresh vegetables here for $1-$2 and there are so many choices of ramen noodles, some starting from as little as 24c (just make sure you add some veggies to your noodles to add some nutritional value). When I was living on Struggle Street during my trainee days I could do my entire weeks shop here for $30 or less! So after a few weeks, on a night when my wife and I couldn't be bothered cooking we made an order. For two pieces of fish, chips, calamari and some potato scallops we paid under $20. We went down to picked up our order and found that the street outside was stacked with illegally parked cars and that The Codfather was pumping with people. My wife and I agreed that this looked like a good indication about the food we were about to eat. When my name was called out, the woman at the counter was really friendly. I was surprised when she said, with no second though to it, that we were new in the area. Happy with the in store experience we went home. We unwrapped the paper and were pleased to see a plethora of golden fried seafood and potato goods. The food smelled and tasted as brilliantly as it looked. The highlight was the potato scallops in batter, delicious. Needless to say, we are considered locals now.
