We visited this lovely old National Trust property today. It was built in the 16th century. Staff and volunteers are very friendly and helpful. Mike at the car park entrance stamped our membership cards and directed us to park close to the entrance since my wife needed a wheelchair which we obtained from the shop. It was busy since it is Halloween.
The Great Hall of the house is most impressive. We could take pictures there but nowhere else inside the building. Tony, a volunteer, narrated the interesting history of Rufford Old Hall and its owners, the Hesketh family. He showed us various artefacts in the Great Hall, with particular emphasis on a large, solid oak screen which has been intricately carved. The ceiling and walls of the Great Hall are impressive. The rooms on the first floor were tastefully decorated. There were some nice paintings.
We had cream tea in the Tea Room, served by Kath, who was polite and friendly.
One can have picnic in the gardens but it was getting late so we did not have time to visit the gardens properly. A barge went floating down the canal that runs alongside. I think it is the Leeds-Liverpool canal.
We enjoyed ourselves. It is well worth a visit and it will not take more than a couple of hours to visit the Hall and the gardens. read more
