It is one of BSA's premier camps in the Mid-west. They offer 9 weeks of summer camp located in Hoosier National Forest right on Lake Monroe. They offer boating (canoe, kayak, sailing, motor), private dock for swimming, gun and archery ranges, horseback riding, climbing tower, high-ropes course, and so much more. Wild Orchid has a somewhat hidden location, and doesn't look like it should be there. It's in almost a garage and has plenty of parking. From the outside, it is pretty inconspicuous, but on the inside, Wild Orchid has a very vibrant and clean atmosphere. Taking proper precautions for COVID, stations for each student were spread 6 feet apart and there were sanitizing stations and sanitizing procedures taken before and after our class. The class itself was fabulous. Anita instructed our class of mostly novices and did an excellent job of both being engaging and breaking down the basics. I definitely struggled with some of the techniques she presented, and she ensured that I felt confident in myself and corrected what I was doing. I highly recommend looking into taking classes at Wild Orchid, whether it be as a group or as an individual. It really pushed me out of my comfort zone and I am looking forward to returning soon!

The teachers are poorly trained, unorganized, and usually unhelpful. Foundations is their best foot forward, and it only goes down hill from there. Still, the park is unfenced and visitors can use the nearby parking lots to access the shelter, playground, and courts within. There is one shelter and another building that looks more like a maintenance building than a true shelter. It did have picnic tables by it, so you'll have to inquire about its function. The playground has a variety of slides and swings, but doesn't have much of a base to protect from falls or keep kids from getting dirty if it has rained. The coolest thing about the park is the hippopotamus shaped drinking fountain where kids have to stick their own heads in the mouth to get a drink. Review #2675

They have plenty of stalls for the horses of their patrons, and they provide all the needed amenities necessary for horse campers. What's nice about Midwest versus regular camping is that it is really set up for horseback riders, and they make it very convenient to bring your horse and trailer. My wife and I have visited Midwest annually since she got me into horses and we have not had a bad visit. With Midwest being on the edge of Hoosier National Forest, you have no shortage of trails to ride. The Midwest trails are well maintained, better maintained than in the national forest in fact. Best part of visiting: no cell phone signal. You are in a nice quiet place you can relax and enjoy yourself without the stress of the outside world.

I had the privilege of meeting the wonderful folks who started MTR. What wonderful people. I remained impressed as the business changed hands. However, the current management has a lot to learn when it comes to how to treat the people who pay their hard earned money to travel and stay there. I was unpleasantly surprised at how rudely I was asked to move my rig. Courtesy goes a long way with me. Just be polite and remember --we are the customers. I have spent a lot of money in their tack store and have been a weekend and day rider as well. The people who run it now need to remember that they are not the only access point into Hoosier National Forest. Sadly this will be my last visit. I have absolutely loved meeting horse campers from all around....it's just the disrespectful and rude treatment from the female manager/owner that has convinced me to go elsewhere.

My friend visits the beach every weekend with her boys and others join her from time to time. She had lived in the area for several years before she knew it was there. We drove down for the day earlier this month and really enjoyed it. The beach is a little rocky and muddy, but I suppose that's to be expected in Indiana. It's a nice little spot to lay out, hang out with friends and family, or take out your floats, paddle boards, kayaks, etc. I would visit again. I give it four stars for a couple of reasons. 1. The difficulty in getting down to the beach area since there is only one small walkway. 2. The restrooms are not well-marked, and are thoroughly disgusting. Although a DNR employee sits near the restrooms, they don't seem to do a whole lot. There were people using one of the grills near the restrooms who thought it would be a good idea to play soccer on the sidewalk instead of the grass. They made no effort to move or stop playing as people had to walk by to the restrooms, and the DNR employee cared more about asking someone to move their vehicle than ask those disrespectful guests from hitting others with their soccer ball.

There is also a small shelter with restrooms there , but there was not any picnic table under the shelter. The play ground has a duck rocker, a bank of traditional/toddler swings, a sandbox, a sit and spin, a medium jungle gym with slides, spiral pole slide, and tic-tac-toe, and a large jungle gym with tunnel, bridges, monkey rings, and slides. One of the slides is closed with a piece of plywood through. The equipment is well maintained, with the exception of the broken slide. You will find a bench and a picnic table just off of the playground area where caregivers can sit and watch their littles play. The park dates back to 1917 and was originally named Washington Park. In 1918, it was give its current name Wilson Park, for Woodrow Wilson, who was president at the time. The park is also home to a bunch of horseshoe pits, with a small shelter next to it. This park has 4 very nice and newly installed pickleball courts. The courts are fenced in and there are benches just outside the fence for people to sit. I really like this low key park. The larger and also fairly new play area in the rear near the dog park is also a winner. It's next to the water park, which is a bit of fun in the summer! As of now, there is currently a very large project that has been going or a while and has made parking here more difficult. I don't know what it' supposed to be, but progress is slow.
