Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden is located on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University. The actual location is in the corner of University Drive and Starr Avenue.
The gardens were created in the 90's and encompasses more than 8 forested acres along Lana Creek. It features more than 7,000 evergreen and native azaleas (more than 500 named varieties), Japanese maples, camellias, and other unique plants. It is one of the most diverse azalea collections in the United States.
The trail that leads through the garden is paved and about a mile in length. There are many benches along the trail inviting you to stop, sit down, and enjoy the trip.
The day we visited was an unusually cold and wet day for early April. The severe storms that had rolled in over the last couple of days really did a number on the blooms. Even with that, it is a very beautiful and calm place to visit. It's hard to believe no one has written about this place before now.
Will I return? Definitely when back in this part of the world. read more
