I'm not one who usually writes reviews for the services I receive, but on this occasion I felt compelled to express my overwhelming satisfaction with the "haircut" I received. Best "haircut" ever!! I wish my hair would grow faster so I can do this all over again sooner rather than later.
I'm a middle-aged man with a bald spot the size of a large coffee mug adorning the top, back of my head. For years I haven't cared much about my hair or how it looks. I just keep it short for simplicity and because I find long hair on a balding man kinda silly.
I've been going to Ruberto for over 8 years now and I've always found the customer service to be excellent and the quality of service fine for my needs. With the spread of Covid I sheltered as much as possible and as a result I didn't have a haircut for 7 months. My hair was starting to dangle in my soup. I looked like Howard Hughes in his final, senile years.
As salons and restaurants opened up I waited until I believed that the decision to open these types of businesses was safe. And in the middle of August I pulled the trigger and arranged an appointment. I was expecting to see my regular stylist, however, Sweeta (the owner) told me that she wasn't available and I was assigned to a new stylist, Marianna.
I was expecting the usual "cut", but she had some other ideas. As mentioned, I didn't care much about my hair so I went along.
After a magnificent wash and scalp massage, I sat down in her chair and quickly realized that this was no ordinary stylist. This was an artist. She doesn't speak English well but once I realized that I was witnessing an artist working on my head, I didn't want to talk.
She was meticulous, passionate, careful and dedicated to make sure my cut was just right. She seemed to pay attention to each one of my hundreds of remaining strands of hair. She politely asked is she could use "the machine". I wasn't sure what "the machine" was but by now I was so impressed with her artisanship that I trusted her to do whatever she felt she needed to do to my head ("the machine" was an electric razor. I've never been asked by anyone if they can use an electric razor before. This was typical of the gentle kindness I received).
After about 40 minutes in the chair Marianna finished and I felt that my hair looked better than it has in many years.
Marianna is an artist. I feel that calling her work a "haircut" is insulting. She took a lump of clay and sculpted it into a lump of clay with a beautiful hair style.
Humour aside, I sincerely give my highest praise for Marianna's work and passion and my highest recommendation for her services. I can only hope that she doesn't get scooped up by some salon in Yorkville offering only the best at exorbitant prices.
She is a tremendous bargain for the reasonable prices charged for her services at Ruberto's. My only caveat is that you set aside the time necessary for her to complete her work. I was usually out of the chair in 20 minutes. You need to set aside an hour to get your hair done by Marianna, but it is time extremely well spent.
