Went I the first time, and I found the smell of the place off-putting; it smelled like meat. There is a meat station in the back. And this is the way a meat market should smell. But I'm just so used to the sanitized versions we have now at grocery stores. Here the meat smells like meat should. The grocery items there are great! I need to go by again when I have an hours time to spend there. My boyfriend found his favorite German snack candy here! I will definitely return, and I will update this review. It took me a year to make it here. Hahaha! I've returned a few times, and each time I spend a lot of time perusing the various areas that many think I'm lost or need assistance. Haha! But I don't! I enjoy my adventures here at Ruben's! Today I purchased some powdered morínga! And the man who helped serve me a smaller portion was laughing and had others smiling, including me, because the powder was showing signs of static electricity! I know! Weird! He was very helpful earlier discussing health issues with some women purchasing some other powered nutrients for a healthier lifestyle. The only grocery store for all of your Latinamerican culinary needs. Pickled chicken feet, Uruguayan sugar cookies, yerba mate tea, homemade corn chips, Mexican sugar skulls, Argentine meat rub, Cuban mops (I kid you not), Peruvian beer....literally anything you need out of South and Central America (yes, and Mexico), Ruben's has it. Be warned the surrounding area is also very appropriate in that you feel like you're driving through a Colombian slum. But there's a security guard in the parking lot and I've never had a problem. Reasonable prices for things you'd otherwise have to have internationally shipped to you. Even if you don't have something in mind, go here and I'm sure you'll find something interesting that you can't live without. read more

I've heard of this store before, in how you can find some things you normally don't in many mexican stores. I decided to stop to buy carrots and oxtail for caldo. The store was a bit difficult to maneuver and I wasn't thrilled with the quality of the carrots. Overall I was not impressed but disappointed. It did not help that as I was checking out the ladies were complaining about some customer. Really unprofessional. I gave it 3 stars because I did see certain roots and items I have not seen in other places but ill stick to la michoacana or juniors they have better vegetable quality. read more

I called in an order for 2 pounds of chicharrones. They took my name and quoted me a price of $6.99 a pound, and said it would be ready at 11:00 A.M. the next day. When I arrived, the order wasn't ready. Nobody seemed to care and nobody apologized for it not being ready. I waited quite a while and finally someone brought the order to me. When I checked out, it rang up for $8.99 a pound rather than the price I was quoted. When I got to the car and opened the bag and looked at it, it was not good. It looked old, certainly not fresh or just cooked. When my daughter and I tasted it, it was awful. It was so bland. It had absolutely no flavor! Many of the pieces were soggy and the meat, what little there was, was rock hard. The fat was not only soggy, but it was tough and very hard to chew. It looked like it was left over from the day before and they threw it back in hot grease and tried to revive it. My dogs enjoyed it though. Needless to say, I won't make a return visit and I can't recommend Ruben's. read more

Fantastic hidden gem with folks that are willing to help. We went in for some goat cheese and steaks and met Ruben who was so fun and energetic! This is our new "go to place" for wine, cheese, and meat while we are in the valley. Fantastic variety of eclectic hard to find delicacies we haven't seen in Texas. He has a great wine selection and some of the best goat cheeses we have seen. When he told us about the Alaska king crab he made a patron for life. We will be back. read more

I am soooo in love with the grocery store! First of all, they have a nice selection of argentine goodies. I was blown away to be able to get alfajores, such a great assortment. Then! I got to meet the owners, such awesome guys! so much fun to talk to them :) they make the mom and pop store such a great place to have in McAllen. I was also very nicely surprised to see they have made their own argentine chorizo, I made a choripan~ man, oh man~ I was in heaven for a bit. Everytime I go by, find another little treasure. This place has a variety of spices and goodies from all over latin countries. Gotta stop by and check them out. read more

This is a crazy place! I first went here for a cut of "arrachera fajitas" and I've been back 5 times now. I'll break it down in a couple sections because my mind is always scrambling after every visit. 1. Meat market, they have everything! Goat, bacon, arracherra fajitas. My first time there I was told they sell the elusive arracherra fajita. When I went to ask, the butcher asked how much and how I wanted it cut. He saw a glaze over my eyes and suggested the fajita cut. Awesome. I noticed the newspaper cutting posted on the wall, they import Alaskan king crab (overnight) place orders in advance. Wow! I saw bone in rib steaks/$3.49/lb. I thought they were ribeyes and bought all of them (I thought they made a mistake). Next trip, fajitas, all the rib steaks, and goat? "How do u want those goat ribs cut?", again honey glazed eyes.... "Are you going to BBQ or..." Stop! U had me at BBQ. I asked the butcher why the ribeyes are so cheap? He said, "that's a rib steak, we have ribeyes. Would u like some ". I stop at Bob Starks for bone in ribeye at least once a week. The rib steaks here are awesome. The butchers here care and educate (unless there is a line). 2. Variety - a new dimension, first isle loaded with clay pots for simmering and cooking beans (no lead as posted), estropajos for bathing, and a variety of authentic cooking devices and utensils from Mexico. Next few isles are what you would see in the "ethnic" section of HEB scattered with weird black salts and other eclectic food items. Pass the meat market and get into the cold section and you have the largest variety of roots, Jack fruit, and other exotic tubers, edible flowers, etc. Next isle, fruits and veggies. Large selection of fresh mints, and varied other greens including spinach, verdolagas (heard of that?) and fresh cut watermelons and papayas. Here is the kicker....a cut of Papaya was 88 cents, a quartered watermelon was $1.49. I'm thinking to myself that I can buy the perfect portion cheap and its cut and won't go to waste. The isle over filled with crazy cheeses, cold cuts, and more unrecognizable eats from all over the world. They have a hot sauce isle, frozen crazy from all over the world food isle, wine section, exotic beer section, and a very cultured deli. For some strange reason they sell cat food and soap. There is no reason or rhyme to the madness. 3. Customer service- again it's eclectic. First time I went there it was busy, take a number (they have an old school number machine. There is a guy named Hugo running the store who can cure anything with food if u ask him to. I saw him on my first visit talking to some winter Texans about the benefits of Jamaica. I felt like he was selling snake oil but I grabbed a bag and in a week dropped 10 points on my BP. On my last visit he was giving a class. I walked by and 5 minutes later he asked me what I was looking for and if he could help. "I'm just exploring the store while the butchers get my meat ready". My first thought was that he thought I was putting a can of beans in my pocket then he circles around and said, "don't leave before I give you some spice". I've bought the season all at the meat market before (dirt cheap and way better than Tony's or lowery's) and I expected him to sell me on that. He met me at register and made me try the "badilla" spice and gave me a couple ounces on the house. It was outstanding. Your visit won't always be nirvana. This store is another dimension. It's nestled in the hood of lower N McAllen and you will wonder why you parked between a new Lexus and a 72' Ford. It truly is a diamond in the rough and wouldn't be that if it wasn't. Never been there, but have ordered very specific food items from south america and have received them promptly without any problems and shipping fees are very reasonable. the website needs maintenance, so you need to call to order, but you can get just about anything from Ruben's. Good operation as far as I can tell. I will be ordering from them again and again. read more
