I am not…read moreexactly an eco-warrior but it can't be good for us (or the environment) to clean everything we wear, eat off, & sleep in with that stuff. Plus, if we're going to embrace this whole "clean eating" thing we probably shouldn't ingest the stuff off our fork or through our pores. Ok. Rant over. What's great about the Ecostore is that, they actually work. Not like some of that other hippy-loving stuff. We've been using their dishwashing liquid, powder and body wash in our house for a couple of years now and everything always comes out squeaky clean. I don't know if I'll be giving up my heavy duty chemical oven cleaner or bathroom cleaner anytime soon, but it's a start. Yes, you can get a limited range of their products from the supermarket but their store is wonderful. They have a much wider range (including a great range for bubs) and other brands too. You can also refill your containers for a cheaper price! For me, these guys have not only made being eco-friendly a breeze but cost-effective too. Noiice work, Ecostore!!

During those 12 years one of the owners frequently went to America to buy the stock. And for many years they got special orders for me. But ever since the pandemic they have lost the plot. They refused to accept special orders and their shelves rarely offer me what I want. I have repeatedly asked them to figure out a new method of getting their supplies which they refuse to do. How they stay in business is a mystery without desirable stuff to buy. They're old and no longer seem to give a damn. I find it remarkable that they stay in business. Not worth the trip.

I was instantly hit with Americana as the doors spread open for me. No need to trouble yourself with pushing a door American, here let me automatically open for you. Star! Since the owner was clearly using her consumer... ahem marketing skills, the first sight upon entering was a stock pile of Stars & Stripes regalia. All that was needed was the Star Spangled Banner playing in the background. Independence Day is only a few days away, so stock up. Martha's Backyard which of course is a play on words, (think Martha's Vineyard) has many American culinary favorites from candies, seasonings, sauces, cereals, beverages and snacks. I walked out with Cholula, Louisiana Hot Sauce, Lawry's Seasoned Salt, a pack of Lawry's Taco seasoning, mini Butterfingers and 2 boxes of Cap'N Crunch cereal for under $40.00. Not a bad price for imported happiness.

In this particular one, I experienced the most outstanding customer service. Not only were they keen to help, and knew their products well, but apologized for being in the way while they were stocking shelves. I have never had a proper apology for that in any supermarket ever! They moved and offered to take down anything I might need from a shelf I couldn't reach. (also a first!) It really made we want to return, but unfortunately I moved quite far away, so had to change convenience stores. So if you happen to be living in the area or passing through, pop in!

And as it turned out, I was not the only vegetarian out there tempted by the meaty smells wafting through the market - the stall owner, Nathan, readily informed me that he had once in fact sold a sausage bun to a vegetarian woman, who subsequently devoured it without much remorse. Although I managed not to succumb to these cravings, my meat-eating counterpart confirmed that these organic beef sausages were in fact delicious and that I was truly missing out. For $6, you can get a roll with lettuce, two sausages and sauces of your choice, or if you would like to cook them at home yourself you can get a pack of eight sausages, pork or beef, for a well-priced figure of $10. Jimmy's is distributed by the larger organic meat company, Te Kainga Organic, which has been producing meat since 1867 and became organic 10 years ago. You can find Jimmy's sausages stocked at New World in Remuera or you can get a roll made for you on the spot at the La Cigale French Markets or the Britomart Farmers Market.
