It was impossible to even make an appointment, they put you on hold for over an hour and 1/2 The secretary told me that it's not their problem If l'm sick and not able to wait for that amount of time even after just being discharged from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Thoracic Surgical Floor from having a Total Gastrectomy and Jujunostomy, I'm not able to eat for the rest of my life. My Primary Care Physician says that he has nothing to do with Boston since he's not out there even though his name is all over my discharge papers. He said that they just do that. When I mentioned this to my Thoracic Surgeon on my next follow up he couldn't believe it.

My initial impression of Dr. Holtzman during my first and only exam on 10/28/24 was not an…read moreentirely positive one. I found his non-medical questions about my personal life unnecessarily intrusive. (I'd already been asked and answered a couple of those questions online as part of the required Zocdoc new patient intake by his office.) One of these was "What is your sexual orientation?" As with Zocdoc, I told him I was straight. He replied with a smile: "Maybe a straight guy who also sleeps with men?" (I believe his precise words were "Heterosexual meaning you like just women, or women and men?") Which left me slack-jawed. A couple unspoken thoughts crossed my mind in quick succession: "Huh? Wouldn't such a guy be a bisexual?" Followed by a recognition of his obvious insinuation, which I found as unprofessional as it was inaccurate. It may be appropriate for a physician to ask a patient's sexual orientation today (I'm 71), but hardly professional to suggest a different orientation to the patient. His next question was "When did you last have sex?" despite the fact that I came to this first office visit presenting no complaints, let alone symptoms, that might suggest an STD or anything else of a sexual nature. Frankly, I had to wonder what the dude's agenda was. He insisted on giving me a referal to his dermatologist colleague, despite my telling him I had seen two dermatologists ---working together--less than a year earlier as a part of the excision of a couple benign facial blemishes. Then when the results of my Qwest lab bloodwork of a week later came back, liver enzymes AST and ALT in my blood were abnormally high, so I messaged him for his interpretation. Unlike my previous PCPs, who would offer a brief interpretation via their patient portals, his terse response was: "See me." Which I interpreted as another office visit. Fortunately, I subsequnetly remembered that I had taken large doses of acetaminophen at the time of the blood draws due to cold symptoms, which temporarily elevates these enzymes' levels. (Mystery solved and money saved.) But I noted his attempt to turn my simple portal inquiry into a billable office visit, not (in fairness to him) unusual in today's profit-focused US medical industry. As physician/author Elizabeth Rosenthal has written: "The 'first do no harm' directive has been replaced with 'first leave no money on the table' ". In the year that followed, he cooperatively issued for me two gastroenterologist referrals with a recommendation for a colonoscopy, (although I should note that the first referral was for a gastroenterologist conncted to a facility from which a hospital approved post-sedated procedure ride home was unavailable to me, which limitation I had made very clear to him during the 10/2024 exam, thus the need for the second referral. In summary, I had no reason to question Dr. Holtzman's overall medical competence, but also no desire to remain in his practice.

When you go higher you get told things that are blatantly untrue (easilly proven) and that your case will no longer be reviewed. My entire family went here for years and had 2 good doctors. One has retired, one books 2 years out, the rest of the organization doesnt seem to remember who their clients are or why they are doing what they do. Sadly, I would not recomend at all.

I do not recommend them and did not renew for several reasons: * Dr. Donahue is not terribly responsive. There were several occasions where he said "I'll get back to you" and then never did. * Relatedly, I would have to call and follow up every time test results came in-he/the practice never reached out to me. Even the boring ol' dermatologists and ob-gyns of the world (in non-concierge practices) let you know your test was negative/positive/whatever. For $10k a year...can't Dr. Donahue or his staff do the same? * Inability to schedule online (every time I emailed to ask about an appointment--even for telehealth--I was told to call in to speak to someone live just to schedule the appointment). Every time they wanted to see me, they would email me and say "please call in to make an appointment." Couldn't you just have...sent some appointment times in that very email? Or call ME? For this (alleged) level of service and fees, I'd like the ability every hairdresser and nail salon has had since 2010: let me schedule online! Offices can certainly review and reject appointment requests, as these other professions do. * Dr. Donahue is relatively scatter-brained, to put it politely, to the point that it will affect your care. I experienced this a few times across my year in his practice, including in minor ways (e.g., promising to get back to me after he reviewed an article I'd sent him), but the most egregious example is that we had a entire appointment (reviewing test results and recommending actions for me) that he subsequently forgot about. I checked in with him about a month after the appointment to follow-up, and he emailed me to ask me to take a variety of tests before we met...which tests I'd already taken and discussed with him the prior month. When I mentioned the date of our prior meeting and the lab results, he sent an email apologizing. Still: if I were less meticulous--or forgetful myself--I'd have undertaken a whole new round of tests (not covered by insurance, natch). At various points throughout the year, I actually wondered if he might have early-onset Alzheimer's. * Dr. Donahue runs a LOT of tests--many of which are not covered by insurance--the results of which are not terribly helpful. For example, one relatively expensive test for 'food sensitivities' revealed some for me...I asked if I should eliminate those items that showed up in red on the test, at which point he told me the test could be revealing a sensitivity OR just picking up on stuff I'd been eating a lot of lately. That....would have been helpful to know before the test, when I might have modified my diet; when I mentioned this, he said that I could always eliminate something concerning me and then retake the test in a few months. * Dr. Donahue would frequently say things--especially early on, going over my medical history, etc.--like, "now THAT'S interesting!" if I presented a medical quandary or something bizarre or troubling. This language happened a few times, when I presented new issues or we got new test results in. Conversely, I got the sense he was a bit zoned out when we talked about your regular 'run of the mill' medical issues (e.g., high cholesterol), and that overall, the only way to keep his interest would require an ongoing litany of unusual troubles...like he's "House" or something. *At our first meeting/physical exam appointment, he cheerily pointed out a few times that he could do my ob-gyn work, too! I have a great gynecologist, which I mentioned--and he re-mentioned, again, later, that he could do it, too. I thought it was odd that he mentioned it first (I hadn't brought up ob-gyn work because I already have that taken care of) and more than once. I was attracted to the practice because I felt that Dr. Donahue's experience as a doctor in a more rural community may have given him the knowledge/wisdom a kind of old-timey house call doctor would have. Instead, what I got was part absent-minded practitioner, part woo woo medicine dude. No, I don't want to order oregano oil from your Personal Health MD dispensary at Fullscript.com, where you make a commission (and where everything you prescribed costs more than from GNC, Amazon and other online stores). Jeez Louise. That kind of stuff makes you feel like you're in a multi-level marketing scam rather than a pricy concierge medicine practice. If you definitely want to be part of a concierge medical practice, you can find several others in the area for much less money and with more responsive, professional doctors. If you're still on the fence about signing up for concierge medicine at all, I'll say this: you're in the Boston area, and there are no shortage of awesome physicians to choose from who are just part of the regular ol' conglomerates we have. Whichever way you decide to go, this guy ain't it.

While I do support and believe in alternative therapies, when they make sense. I believe in them after traditional medicine might not work, such as acupuncture or massage therapy and the like. I Don't subscribe to the idea that Supplements or Molecular and numerous Genetic testing should be used as a Primary approach to health care or in lieu of traditional medicine first and foremost. That's what Functional Medicine is, lab tests that your standard insurance carrier will not cover and will reject the claim as 'Experimental' because it is which might also explain the high annual membership cost. If you're looking for a physician who isn't interested in 'your' input regarding your medical needs and would prefer to 'tell you' what they thinks is best, than this is the practice for you. If however you want to have a meaningful dialog to work on a plan together such as discussing past comprehensive medical history or being 'asked' if you're familiar with a certain medication or protocol 'before' making assumptions and decisions...this is 100% definitely NOT the practice for you. The membership fee is very high and while you usually don't have to wait long for an appointment. The trade off is not having a traditional GP/Patient relationship. A traditional GP wouldn't sell me a $140 bottle of CoQ10 because my whatever enzymes were low for instance. Or some vastly overpriced liquid fish oil to help with joint pain, because we all know joint pain is based on inflammation and fish oil reduces inflammation...okay. (Which I found on Amazon at 1/3 the price btw.) Don't get me wrong. If this approach 'is' your thing and your not interested in a standard medical GP for your routine illnesses than by all means, enjoy the lovely persian rugs and fine china while you sip some herbal tea. If however you're looking for a Concierge Physician that practices standard traditional medicine or to provide routine referrals as needed. This is not the practice for you. I'll stick with a traditional approach where the emphasis is on treating the patients needs, it's never failed me before and you're valued a great deal more than in a Functional Medicine approach which prefers to ignore the symptoms and go off on tangents for the all important 'root cause'. Quick to schedule an appointment. Also impeccable bedside manner by the attending doctor and the…read moretesting staff. Two major issues with them. 1) They don't follow up at all. I went in for lab work, I was told I'd get results "within a week", both by the front desk and by their website. The day after I got an automatic email with a web-based account (mychart.bmc.org), where I could check my results when they were ready. Awesome & efficient, I think. 2 weeks later there were no results online (and still aren't 3 months after my visit). I called, and they gave me my results on the phone, with an attitude like they were just sitting on them for the last few days waiting for me to do exactly this -- call them when I thought they might be ready. I don't know what's worse -- making patients wait extra time to find out results, or how crappy it would be for someone with some major disease to have the front desk confirm their name on the phone and then give them their results in earshot of anyone waiting in the lobby ("Oh Mrs. Jane Doe? Last four digits of your social? 5555...let me check...yes, you came back positive for HIV. When can we schedule a follow up appointment?") What's the point of your online system if you don't use it? I still don't have any official lab results from my visit, either online or mailed to me, so if a partner wants you to show them a clean bill of health you are S.O.L. if you come to get tested here. Keep that in mind. 2) They are outrageously priced. The testing work is indeed free (I think), but that's it. I got an invoice after my visit showing they tried to collect over $60 from my insurance, got $40 (i.e. the MAXIMUM REASONABLE AMOUNT insurance thinks it should cost), and were billing me for the remainder. When I checked on it, the bill was actually for pharmacy services -- a single dose antibiotic to be exact, with a common retail price of $8-$10 in most pharmacies, but over $60 from them. I have no idea why it is so much higher. Maybe they insist on using brand name instead of generic, it wasn't discussed and I wasn't really given an option when they gave me the drugs in the clinic so I can't say. So just be mindful of this if you receive any treatments in the clinic, which is regular practice to do for common STDs before lab results are completed if you are high-risk -- i.e. you had contact with a partner who later informed you they found out they have an STD, which is probably why you're going to get tested in the first place. If you get treated there, you'll pay through the nose, especially if you came in without insurance because you thought it was all free. Maybe you'd be better off asking for a prescription for any drugs they want to give you, taking it to a pharmacy and paying 85% less -- do you really need a doctor coaching you on how to take a pill? Great medical staff, but an administrative cluster-F.
