I am giving the Royalton 5 Stars ... but be forewarned, its a dive, with a limited bar selection and the food consists of pickled eggs and bags of chips.
The Royalton is iconic and well placed. often there are very few patrons, the beer is very cheap (superior lager draft) and I have never known anyone to get sick from their pickled eggs.
Every place you look, you are reminded of the "former glory" from the iconic sign, to the former hotel lobby. If you are truly lucky, you might get to experience the "lounge" .. a very vintage environment, to the Left of the lobby.
The Owners/Bartenders are extremely friendly, and as long as you keep paying for drinks they will keep them coming. They are even courteous enough to poor the last few drops of your old beer into your new glass ... waste not want not.
Its a down to earth place. I am surprised more students don't frequent the place... all it needs is a few kids in tight pants and thick rimmed glasses, an it would be a hipster mecca. Thankfully, its just worn out booze hounds dreaming of former glory.
I love this place. No other bar in thunder bay captures the true spirit of the Lakehead like the Royalton does. read more
