Excellent stop for Indian food. This bustling place thankfully had a spot for a solo diner. If you are coming to the Ghent area, it may be of value to make a reservation in advance. I popped in around 8:45 so a later dinner probably helped me. Sticking to my routine, I ordered chicken tiki masala and cheese naan. I will say this is some of the best, most tender chicken I have ever had in my masala and the cheese naan was on par to be the best cheese naan I have had...and I eat lots of Indian food, it is pretty top on my food group list. If you are like me and like spice but not too much spice, I ordered the Belgium spice level 2. Now I pride myself on being able to handle heat and I suggest this level or maybe even one lower if you are similar. I was surprised at the level of heat for a Belgium level 2. Came here for dinner on a quiet Tuesday. Cultural interior that's greatly decorated. Ordered the butter chicken along with some naan bread. Food was pretty good and had an authentic taste. Owners were checking regularly on customers and that was pretty nice. One of the owners was busy throughout the evening with a certain table which made the meal enjoyment a little less comfortable. This is mainly a review on really poor and insulting service. I came by to celebrate diwali, looking for Indian food that'd remind me of home and was met with poor service. I walked in asking if they had place for 1 and they said "no, they're fully booked" , I accepted and started to walk out but a white couple walked in right after me, asked for a seat without a reservation and they made a plan for them and seated them immediately. It was truly insulting. I will not be coming back to this restaurant, with their treatment being inconsistent with customers. Please be better. It's further insulting when you look at some of the low reviews you already have and see you have the same issue recurring. You clearly show some kind of discrimination and need to improve. The food might be good here (based on the ratings) but I would not recommend this to anyone purely on principle. The owner unabashedly shows discrimination based on skin color and is rude, I supposed I should have read the negative reviews before going here. Nothing "Royal" about this place. We ended up having a very lovely evening at a nearby vegan restaurant called Epiphany's Kitchen after a terrible experience here. The sign said "fully booked - table available after 9pm". We happened to be in the area at the door at 9pm and politely asked if there was a space for two and we're told "sorry we are fully booked". Two people walked in right behind us when we were waiting to exit the restaurant without a reservation and were seated. When we confronted the hostess about this, she made an excuse saying "when you were here we didn't see a table but then we saw one, let me get someone else" which is such a pathetic excuse. We were not going to give them our business after such a treatment but wanted to bring to their attention that their behavior is wrong but turns out owning up to their mistake is not an option for this business. The owner (presumably) then came over ready with a made up response and rudely said "I know those people, what now?" clearly contradicting the hostess and demonstrating how they run their business on excuses and lies. read more

Royal India has a lot of amazing vegan dishes in their new menu. They also have amazing vegan naan bread; regular, garlic and filled naan. The owner is vegan and so friendly! The way to dine here is to order a few dishes and share with your friends, that way you can taste all of the amazing spices they put in each dish. You will never be disappointed dining at Royal India. I hope they get the chance to go fully vegan soon, so they don't have to serve dead animals anymore read more

A little bit hidden in the city centre of Ghent, you can find this authentic Indian restaurant called Royal India. They have a very elaborate menu with vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. I went for the Chicken Tikka Masala and Naan. It was even possible to adjust the spicyness of the dish. The food was amazing. The taste was very similar to the Indian dishes I had before in London. The loafs of Naan were huge. I really had my fill. The owner of the place was working in the restaurant himself, he was very kind and dedicated to 100% customer satisfaction. If I have to make a remark about something: I had a mango lassi drink, I wish size of this drink was a bit larger. I had it finished in no time. I think I really might come back to try out the other dishes. read more

This was a nice restaurant in Ghent . The food was really nice compared to what you normally get in Belgium . Spice level was adequate and the hospitality was splendid . We ordered Butter chicken and kadhai chicken along with Naan bread . The food was to my taste and I really would recommend it to others travelling to Ghent . This restaurant is in Gent Centrum but in a quiet narrow street. The place is small and seems to be full till about 9 PM. The owner recommends making a reservation if you plan on eating before 9PM. We spent 3 nights in Gent in mid August 2018 and we had dinner here for 2 nights. We arrived before 9 PM on both days but we were lucky to get a table in 10 minutes. The owner is a great guy who knows how to indulge his guests. My wife who is pretty chatty was enjoying her conversation in Hindi with the owner. We are vegetarians and the food was awesome. I wish Southern California had good Indian restaurants like this. We highly recommend eating here. I walked in to this restaurant on a Sunday evening knowing that It might turn out to be an expensive meal with small portions and bland Indian food. Being an Indian and vegetarian I still couldn't resist. My experience on the contrary was terrific! The food was very tasty, service great and most importantly the owner and his wife are excellent hosts. I had the Kadhai Paneer, Bhindi (Okra) masala and tandoor roti and everything tasted great. The tandoori roti is amazing. The portions are decent and more than enough...I got some leftover packed to take back to the hotel and it still tasted fine the next day. I loved the food so much that couple of days later when I ordered a takeout the owner had some musicians over and insisted that I dine in and enjoy listening to the live Indian music. I ordered dal tadka, jalfrazi and roti...though I must say that I liked the Khadai paneer over the Jalfrazi. However Mr. Nagender and the musicians made me feel like 'Home away from Home'!!!
