I have been a patient of Dr.Matthews for 26 years. During that time he has solved numerous issues I have had with surgery and other means. Recently I have suffered from Achilles Tendonitis in both feet which caused chronic pain and limited all my activities, even simple walking. I have had 8 procedures done in 5 foot surgeries. Dr. Roy Mathews performed my last 2 surgeries. My "Pes Cavus," extremely high arch led to severe metatarsal deviation and bunions at an early age. Besides hammered toes and first metatarsal bunions on both feet, I developed fifth metatarsal bunions as well. I recommend Dr Matthews for bunion surgery. I paid privately to have the surgery done at Dr Matthews office as MSP would not take care of my bunion until is worsened much more It was a preventative gamble which paid off. Now I am out of pain functioning normally. Had I waited until MSP would have taken care of it my condition would have been worse requiring more extensive surgery and recovery. If you are having problems with your feet look no further than Dr Mathews Clinic. Located on the 6th floor of a medical building in New West you would not even know it was there without having the clinic recommended by someone else! They are very professional and deal with your foot issues in a very timely manner. Like all doctors you may have to wait a week or so to get in to see someone but you have to expect that with any specialist and a week is such a short time to wait too. If you are having any problems with your feet don't let it get worse like I did just get in and fix the problem. read more

I cannot recommend Dr. Mathews. My consultation was a complete waste of time. He hadn't even looked at my x-rays in advance, and he would never had looked at them if I hadn't reminded him to do so during my consultation. He and I had exchanged email correspondence before my appointment, and he confirmed that the issue could be resolved surgically. When I met him, however, he reversed course without providing any explanation. His advice to me was to just leave my feet alone. I found a foot and ankle surgeon able to do what Dr. Mathews could not. read more

I have seen Dr Mathews before for an ingrown toe nail. He seemed decent on that visit a year or so ago. I contacted him recently about extreme foot pain and an orthotics appt. I was pretty astonished at his rude, condescending and unprofessional reply. At first I thought perhaps I read too much into it, so I posted it on FB for feedback. The general consensus was that he was very unprofessional and shockingly rude. So I thought I would share this as some people may not want to be treated like SHIT in dealing with a Dr when in serious pain. AVOID......I had enough problems to begin with. I went to their office 4 months ago. Immediately after he did warm laser therapy and vigorous foot massage I was in intense pain in the arches. I have not been able to walk or stand very much since then and am on opiates due to this pain. The day after treatment I called complaining about the pain and he said use Advil and Tylenol assuring me that the pain would go within a week. WRONG. Then he suggested an immobilizer foot brace. I have FM and other doctors told me ...DO NOT USE IT. Anyway I don't believe in chasing bad money with more so I never went back. My wife was in the room and watched his assistant massage my feet, She was wincing the whole time. Bottom line is Dr Matthews totally ruined my life. In my opinion.....AVOID read more

Dr. Matthews has been absolutely great. I had bunion surgery on my left foot 3.5 weeks ago and the experience has been excellent. He explained everything well and provided me with everything I needed before and after surgery. Staff are very helpful as well. The result is fantastic, I love the look of the foot and I am walking runners. Sure painful the first time you slip in the shoe after a literally pain-free experience after surgery, but I am following his orders, am bending my joint and walk a little bit more every day. I notice the progress by the hour. I will have my right foot done by him as well. Unfortunately that one has been operated by a surgeon before, who did do a poor job. So Dr. Matthews may have to do something more invasive (Lapidus). I trust he will do his best and choose the right method and I appreciate his straight and informative communication with me. read more

A friend referred me, as i had/have been suffering with a dreadful case of plantar fasciitis for some time. It was determined that i needed orthotics and a deposit was promptly made, to enable the lab he uses, to begin production of my orthotics. Being in a temporarily difficult financial situation, i sought the aid of an association to help me with the balance owing. I told him and his staff, that this organization required an official invoice, to approve the expense. I was assured that an invoice would be forwarded. There was an error in the email address and my rep called the office (after i notified her of the error) , leaving all her information on their voicemail, along with a request to be called back. They never returned her call. She called again many days later and spoke directly with the secretary at the Kerrisdale office. She presented herself, explained the situation and requirements and was told that the invoive would be promptly emailed to her. It never was. I called his office and left a message, asking that they please follow up, given that i never sit for the work that i do, as the doctor himself, is well aware. Days later, ie this morning, a message was left by the secretary from their New West office. She stated that if i needed an invoive, they could send one to me, but that their policy was never to forward any to third parties.... Why not say that to me at the time of the original request, i wonder?? I called back and finally spoke to the secretary. She said she had the correct email address to send the invoice to and promised to send it "today before noon". I apprised my rep of this and ask that she keep me posted... Later this morning, i get a call from my friend. She had received what sounded to have been a scathing, if not slanderous communication about me, by. Dr. Mathews himself. He stated that his staff "no longer wanted to deal with all tje extra work i was asking of them". He added that i was "harassing" them with all the calls and that they wanted no part of it any more. He intimated he had lost money and time with me and no doubt had some other choice words of condemnation, for a widow (me) temporarily down on her luck. I spoke with my rep that evening whom, after diligently checking her inbox, told me that no email/invoice from the offices of Dr.Mathews had arrived. To say that to date, my experience with this doctor and his staff has been unpleasant, would be akin to calling the plague, mildly inconvenient. The ONLY thing myself and my case worker are attempting (and unsuccessfully at that), is for his office to forward a digital copy of an invoice, to an email address! For a seven year old today, no more than a one minute task (?). I see no respect or concern for professional courtesy or good customer servicr here. No respect for my case worker's time and effort and worst of all, seemingly no concern for my urgent need of these orthotics . Ps. I had bunion surgery 18 months ago. Dr. Mathews was skilled, straightforward and accurate about what to expect, pleasant and funny. Very glad my GP recommended him. He provided all the info I needed to properly prepare for the surgery and recovery. The medication he prescribed was appropriate and helpful, and dealt with the short term post-surgical pain well. He monitored me for a while after the surgery and I had no complications. Not to say it's a piece of cake - it was almost a year before my foot felt fully normal. My foot looks and feels great now. His receptionist was also pleasant and when I called with questions I had forgotten to ask in my appointment, got me the answers right away. If I need my other foot done, I will certainly choose Dr. Mathews again. read more
