Willow Tree Preschool was my son's first experience away from me, as well as his first experience with other children in a structured environment. The school was the perfect transition for him (and me!), as it was welcoming, organized and fun to be at, which gave him the right amount of structure balanced with the freedom to be himself. When I first met Kim, the owner, I told her I felt like it was what I had imagined that perfect preschool would be for my son--natural materials, a beautiful setting, and an outside play area and garden to explore with wonderful teachers and kids. My son truly enjoyed going to school each day and my husband and I could tell that he felt valued as a part of the school community. He had his own hook, cubby, cup and wash cloth at school, as well as a "me" book to share and a journal of his own to write and draw in each day--small details that made my son feel pretty special. He enjoyed the visiting art, music and yoga teachers that made each day interesting and dynamic. I know he felt safe and free to explore and discover. He came home happy, focused and even more open to collaboration with his younger brother. We loved that the school hosted events and field trips that included the children and parents, which helped our entire family to be a part of the community as well. My husband and I were always delighted to receive a "Daily Page" each day by email that recounted the day's activities and projects, which we shared with appreciative aunts, uncles and grandparents. Kim and her staff made special efforts to let me know how my son was doing, and I always felt like they were open to hearing my concerns and suggestions. We're sad to be leaving Portland this fall, but if we were staying, I'd want all three of my kids to be part of Willow Tree.

I was so impressed by the finished products - especially the artwork. I saw a huge difference in my son throughout his time at Willow Tree. He was so much more social and confident and inquisitive. He loved going to school and developed some really meaningful relationships with students and teachers alike. I would absolutely recommend this sweet little school to anyone.

The kindness and patience of the staff is amazing. Teacher Emily is an expert in child development and education through the Montessori method, recognizing individual strengths of each child. The staff takes great care to prepare and regularly rotate activities designed for different aspects of development. Their home is a safe environment with an outdoor space and conveniently located near two parks. We have seen so much growth in our son since he joined the OBS community. He had a speech delay and Teacher Emily worked closely with Multnomah Early Childhood Program for services. Not only is his speech improved, but he is more independent and has made friends. We are confident he is ready for kindergarten and are so glad OBS has been part of our village!

The care our children received was pretty good. I really did enjoy our preschooler's teacher. She…read moreseemed to genuinely care about her kids and enjoy being around them. However, my permanent impression of this business will forever be tarnished by our experience with the owner and her ethics. If it weren't for my comment above I would give this business one star. We were required to give a 30 day notice to end our contract with discovery gardens, which we did. The way our online payments are set through our bank and not knowing what our prorated amount for the month of July would be, we allowed for the payment for a full month to go through to avoid a late fee. My husband communicated this to the manager of that facility and she didn't seem to see a problem with this, as in we should have the money we didn't owe returned to us. I called the owner at the beginning of July about this. Not only did she not call me back but when i saw her a full week later she acted as if she may not be able to return our overpayment to us. She said the contract we signed didn't allow for "refunds" and gave me some kind of song and dance about how difficult it is to do this with payroll, IRS, etc. She also mentioned she thought it was strange that we made a full month's payment. She had no problem cashing our check though without checking in and asking. I immediately went and looked at our contract that night and it said nothing of the sort. Just refunds for regularly scheduled days. Anyways, she actually had the nerve to be rude to my husband later that week when he asked about it. She did tell him it would be 30 days to see a check. My husband said he was writing that down and she said to him " I don't care". I emailed her to confirm the day we would expect a check and, of course, she didn't respond. I am appalled by her lack of professionalism and business ethics. She acted as if she was entitled to the money, which was a decent chunk of change. What is worse, this isn't a business i had my car fixed at or a place i had dinner; we trusted her with the most important things in our lives, our children. If she treats parents this way, i can only imagine how she treats her staff as well. I am extremely glad our children's care are not being entrusted to her business and management anymore.

Their website doesn't have prices so I emailed their designated address. I didn't hear anything after a week, so I called and left a message...didn't hear anything back. I physically went to their office, but the one person that was nice and helpful couldn't talk about enrollment. She referred me to someone else, who didn't care that no one had got back to me. She took down my information and no one has got back to me yet.
