I met with Gary and Sal and we came up with the fees and started the work. Did I get canceled on or have to wait in the conference room for 15 minutes at times, sure, but that's not why I'm writing this. Once the books were "scrubbed" from the other accountant, the taxes were done. After I received notice that everything was done, I received an email from Gary asking for more money, which took me by surprise since we already worked out pricing. Once I told him I wasn't agreeable to pay more (he should've just told me ahead of time things took longer than expected, although there were never any delays). From that point on it was nothing but unprofessional, rude, and disrespectful attitudes from Gary, Sal & Ana. I tried getting my QuickBooks backup file to avoid paying $800 to have the new firm bring them to date...but Capata is telling me they don't have them. I don't have my own QB software, so were the books even worked on? A chargeback for the amount they charged me for bookkeeping will be next. I speak with a lot of business owners about their frustrations with CPA firms. Do yourself a favor and move on from this nightmare company. **UPDATE** As soon as the reviews went live, we received calls from Managing Partners, Supervisors, and people I never even met at CAPATA. Within 24 hours we had access to our QuickBooks backup files, which is all we wanted in the first place. SINCE THEN, WE HAVE BEEN SLAMMED WITH NEGATIVE REVIEWS FROM CAPATA, BEEN HARRASSED DAILY TO REMOVE OUR NEGATIVE REVIEWS, ETC., If they would've spent a fraction of this time getting my QuickBooks files, we wouldn't be having these issues. My old CPA was just not getting it done. Never knowing what I owe until a few days before the deadline and having to scrabble to come up with $80k in 48 hours isn't fun.... but with CAPATA, I feel like I always know where I stand quarterly. Monthly P&Ls, quarterly meetings, tax projections.. it's just feels so good...n when business starts to slip, they alert me instantly and help me get back on track. Ya, they are a bit more $ then other places, but the quality of work shows. I sleep so much better.. and save way more money then the fees I paid. There was little to no communication & our tax form was returned to us the day prior to April 15th for review. Quite literally, everything was incorrect. Our overall income was wrong, our address was wrong, and our daughter was not listed as a dependent. This almost caused us to miss out on a 2k tax break!! The lack of care that went into this was outstanding. We are a young couple who cannot afford this huge of a mistake. When we emailed back that there were mistakes found we did not hear back & had to scramble to find alternative help. Instead of a resolution we received a $675 fee due. I emailed again saying we will not be paying the fee for services, as it was all wrong, and received an email back with no effort to reconcile the situation & a "best of luck" in finding alternative help. Although I put my time in understanding and preparing everything, previous accountants dropped the ball with communication or missed ends. My wife (who I met in LA :) and has her own proprietorship) and I met Jenny Lau & Bob Topp for our accounting needs in early 2019. We were impressed with Jenny's experience working with medical practices in the area. - Immediately, I appreciated Jenny's straightforward nature when it comes to financial and time quotes for work needed for tax preparation and personal / business filings, including 1096 and 1099. - It was an especially difficult task, considering my numerous spreadsheets and unreconciled ends left from previous CPAs. - Through a friendly and receptive staff (especially Ms/ Kimber Spickert), sensitive information is communicated both ways in a timely fashion. - An encrypted portal is used to manage the uploading/downloading of all forms and supporting material, including signature forms. - All extensions and filings were completed on time!!! Furthermore, Topp & Lau partners with an excellent payroll system (Heartland, associate: Michele Holmes) that has been instrumental in our personal and business transitions to W2 where applicable. As mentioned, the firm is straightforward with costs, utilizing an engagement form and including fees for technology costs and time need for reconciliation of disparate accounts. Their pricing is on par with that of previous CPAs and my understanding of the market in Los Angeles (though their firm in in Orange County). ***However, we were very happy with the work that was completed for our businesses, including both savings and ongoing considerations as we bought a house and have a child on the way! I look forward to seeing how our relationship with Topp & Lau will evolve over the year. Definitely a strong recommend to both individual/families with personal accounting needs, as well as young companies and practices looking to get started off on the right foot!

It's now been 6 months since I ended the relationship…read moreand I'm receiving notice after notice from the State Franchise Tax Board, EDD, Los Angeles City and other entities demanding money because Semaphore filed incorrectly and obviously had me pay incorrect amounts. I don't know what I'm supposed to pay (that's what I hired them for), and pay whatever they tell me. Not only that, I had another CPA look at my 2019 Returns which Semaphore filed and found they made a $25,000 error! Luckily they're able to amend the returns that Semaphore botched and get this money back. They forgot to stop paying one of my contractors for months (even though our very clear email thread stated the end date) and even though I gave them all of the needed information months in advance, they told me the day taxes were due that I had to write a $90,000 check within 8 hours to the government. No heads up. No "by the way, this is coming down the pipe, let's prepare." Just, tax returns are done, you own $90K today! They had months to do this. They nickel and dime you for every additional service, like a $6 refile fee with the city they'll charge you $250 to handle. Beware! They have carved out a niche in the creator community, but they are completely negligent and you will be sorry you went with them in the long run.
