The lady who serves the table absolutely kind, efficient and excellent host, I think is the owner. This restaurant only open for Christmas Time. It is a must to do in St. Gallen. My first Swiss Fondue experience was an immersive, cheerful, cheese-fest with great service, food,…read moreand drinks in a uniquely Swiss atmosphere. It's $26 CHF (Swiss Francs for my US readers) per person, and they bring you a boiling vat of cheese and a bucket of bread. The menu is basically a listing of what kind of cheese you want, along with some sharables and desserts. I have a deeply held, long-standing love for cheese. But, this experience tested even my limits. The rule is, you don't drink anything cold with it as it will harden the cheese in your system. Seems like a bit of an urban legend. But, the alternative is brandy and wine, which they bring in great quantities if you ask for it. The brandy shot is included. Ah, the Swiss :) The cheeses were delicious and the bread soft. We dipped and swirled with long forks. My only other Fondue experience was Simply Fondue in Texas, where you actually cook meats in hot oil. This was not that. Cheese only. We also tried some onion soup, which was wonderful and not at all like "French Onion Soup" as we call it in the US. Not even sure if that's really French. For dessert we ordered some fruit and a strawberry sorbet, also outstanding. Our server was happy and fun, walking us through our new experience. We shared it with some local friends, making for a memorable night. Highly recommended if you want some great local food!

We did, and reserved 6:00 PM that Thursday (everything later was taken). We came in on time to our reservation, but found our waitress to be a bit on the unfriendly side. Although 95% of the tables had fondue, she seemed very put out by working, and she was difficult to track down when we wanted to order more wine (this is not by American standards, and we weren't yelling in English. I lived in Germany for two years, speak good German, and am accustomed to European service). The restaurant was very cozy. If you're a table of two you are likely to share your table with another party of two, and it's just warm and homey on the inside. The food was very good- we ordered fondue for two and a salad to share, and found that more than adequate in terms of amount of food. The prices were reasonable, although the wine was more than in other restaurants in the area. I've had fondue before and preferred that experience, but if you find yourself in St. Gallen, craving fondue, then this is a fine choice.

The food: the chef is definitely a magician of ingredients and presentation. I had my best risotto ever. I didn't know it's a Michelin star restaurant until I read the other review here, and I found it's true. From my Michelin restaurant experiences I think one star is very humble. Definitely should go there if you ever close to the area. There's peaceful and beautiful lake and this gourmet place to enjoy the food of the day. Especially for Americans, don't miss this gem, you know what I meant!

He got 17 Gault Millau points and a Michelin star because of his light Swiss cuisine that effortlessly integrates Asian elements and spices into it, without becoming a fusion or Eurasian cuisine. The amuse bouches were delicious, but the non-pastry highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the luxurious foie gras variation, the best of its kind. They offer a six-course gourmet menu for just CHF 140.-, great value for money. Be careful: You'll feel VERY full afterwards! The restaurant offers the best classic Swiss desserts I've had so far. What would be boring and lazy in other restaurants is made fascinating by the amount of love and attention put into the desserts. Marc Hohl, chef August Minikus' sous-chef, makes a cream parfait with figs in a spicy red wine jus that are just to die for! And their vanilla ice cream is the best in the country. Nothing comes close, not even Martin Surbecks famed vanilla ice cream. Very friendly service, supervised by the chef's lovely wife. Sunset is worth the visit, even just for a drink. Our dinner here was a mix of good and bad. First, the bad... A couple days in Switzerland and we've yet to meet anyone rude or indifferent to us (as Americans) until this dinner. The staff was a bit standoff-ish with us. The staff did their jobs, but our feeling was that it was just business for them. The temperature was too warm in the dinning area; also got loud at times. The pricing was very high for the type of food and the venue. And as a slight annoyance the table was wobbly. Now the good parts... The view was stunning. Parking was easy. The wine and food were very good. I had the Cordon Bleu and my wife had Züri Geschnetzeltes. The wine (Côtes-du-Rhône) was terrific! We did enjoy the evening. Not sure I would recommend Guggeien for a group larger than four, and then only for a special occasion.
