During our recent weekend trip to St. Gallen my husband and I visited this restaurant pub twice. First for drinks, and the second time to kill our curiosity and try some of their yummy looking food. Plus, the service was probably one of the nicest and friendliest group of servers that I have met while in Switzerland, we found we wanted to come back just to see them again. The restaurant is located centrally in St. Gallen and we found ourselves always passing by it throughout our trip, and it was always busy. The atmosphere was immediately inviting, and inside the décor is new meets old, but not in a trendy way. As we were only two people, we always managed to find a seat. The seating area is quite large, and you can also sit at the bar or in the separate smoking area. They have a full drinks and food menu. Based on the recommendations and reviews, we clearly stayed away from the burgers, and paid close attention to the rosti or spatzli options. I hear the St. Gallen sausage is also done well here. We both ordered the rosti and it was one of the best I have had. I liked that it wasn't drowning in oil at the bottom of the pan and had the right touch of crispiness to it. Overall the food isn't five star itself, but the incredible service put it at five stars for me.

Found this restaurant while wandering around the charming streets of St. Gallen on our first night. Noticing that they had a very extensive menu that included some Swiss specialties, like Rösti, and a variety of vegetarian options, we were sold immediately. It was crowded but we were seated immediately. The service is relatively hands off (both times we were here, there were only two servers for the whole place, and it's deceptively large), but both servers we had were friendly while they were interacting with us. We really enjoyed our food (Spätzle and Rösti), and they also have a pretty extensive beer/wine/cocktail list. We enjoyed this place so much that two days later, after we were turned away from the fondue restaurant, we decided to come back here. If you're looking for a place to eat in St. Gallen, I'd recommend Marktplatz for its central location and good food. When it's warm, they also have extensive outdoor seating.

Had a great late lunch/early dinner here with my wife! Very welcoming and major plus that the smoking area is separated from the dining area by a glass door. I had the St. Galler Olma-Bratwurst. She got the Gemüse-Spätzli. Both tasted great and we're happy to have tried food outside our normal palette. A tall glass of Weisser Engel beer helped even more. Great service, they kindly brought us English menus without us asking, and the atmosphere was comfortable. Price were on the high side, but worth the convenience and enjoyment.

My first Swiss Fondue experience was an immersive, cheerful, cheese-fest with great service, food,…read moreand drinks in a uniquely Swiss atmosphere. It's $26 CHF (Swiss Francs for my US readers) per person, and they bring you a boiling vat of cheese and a bucket of bread. The menu is basically a listing of what kind of cheese you want, along with some sharables and desserts. I have a deeply held, long-standing love for cheese. But, this experience tested even my limits. The rule is, you don't drink anything cold with it as it will harden the cheese in your system. Seems like a bit of an urban legend. But, the alternative is brandy and wine, which they bring in great quantities if you ask for it. The brandy shot is included. Ah, the Swiss :) The cheeses were delicious and the bread soft. We dipped and swirled with long forks. My only other Fondue experience was Simply Fondue in Texas, where you actually cook meats in hot oil. This was not that. Cheese only. We also tried some onion soup, which was wonderful and not at all like "French Onion Soup" as we call it in the US. Not even sure if that's really French. For dessert we ordered some fruit and a strawberry sorbet, also outstanding. Our server was happy and fun, walking us through our new experience. We shared it with some local friends, making for a memorable night. Highly recommended if you want some great local food!

Warning: this is the only game in town when it comes to fondue, so they are extremely busy. Came in…read moreon a Monday around 6:00, and was told there was no way to fit us in that night, but we could make a reservation for later that week. We did, and reserved 6:00 PM that Thursday (everything later was taken). We came in on time to our reservation, but found our waitress to be a bit on the unfriendly side. Although 95% of the tables had fondue, she seemed very put out by working, and she was difficult to track down when we wanted to order more wine (this is not by American standards, and we weren't yelling in English. I lived in Germany for two years, speak good German, and am accustomed to European service). The restaurant was very cozy. If you're a table of two you are likely to share your table with another party of two, and it's just warm and homey on the inside. The food was very good- we ordered fondue for two and a salad to share, and found that more than adequate in terms of amount of food. The prices were reasonable, although the wine was more than in other restaurants in the area. I've had fondue before and preferred that experience, but if you find yourself in St. Gallen, craving fondue, then this is a fine choice.
