The restaurant is small and only has standing bars inside, but I was lucky enough to visit on a beautiful day and got to take advantage of the outdoor seating and a table (note: there are only two tables outside! Plenty of chairs, though). If you are looking for something fancy, this isn't the place. If you are looking for a delicious and hearty soup - this is it! Though the menu is in German, the lady working there showed me each of the soups and told me what they were in English. She was so nice and helpful!! They had 3 vegetarian and 3 meat soups. I opted for a broth based curry chicken with vegetables like carrot and cauliflower. It was lightly spicy- as someone who is is very sensitive to spice, it was the perfect amount of heat! The flavors were spot on and it was just hearty enough to be a filling lunch without weighing me down for the day.

We stopped in for a mid-week lunch, and while it wasn't packed, there were several other tables, and one was speaking thai (always a good sign). Service was friendly, and we had no trouble getting by with our pidgin German. The menu was in both German and English, except for the weekday lunch specials page, which was German-only. Since we never get to do so, we both went with something off the lunch special list; chicken curry rice for me, pad thai for my wife. Lunch specials come with a bowl of soup and a little dessert as well, in our case a chicken and rice soup to start, and a bowl of tapioca mango balls in sweet milk. The soup was fantastic; the broth had a nice flavor of chicken, ginger, garlic, and maybe mushroom, and while it was't a huge portion, it was plenty to start the meal and warm up after a chilly morning. The curry rice was also quite good; cooked well and not soggy or mushy. It had a touch of spice from the sliced green chilis in it, but wasn't spicy per se. The pad thai was what I would refer to as German-style; cooked well and with all the right ingredients, but with a touch of what seems to be tomato paste or ketchup in it that gives it a slight different flavor than what you get in the US. Certainly the best pad thai we've had here, but it does taste different than we're used to. The tapioca mango balls in sweet milk was a fantastic way to end the meal. I would describe it as a sort of out-of-season mango and sticky rice flavor; the mango tapioca balls were a little chewy like mango and sticky rice, and the sweet milk was just like the sauce that gives over the top. Like the soup, it wasn't an American-sized dessert, but it was plenty to leave you with a sweet taste at the end of the meal, and a damn good reason to come back if we are in Koblenz again!

Meal: Lunch, eat in…read more All Ratings out of 10: Quality of food: 8 Food to Spend Value: 8 Quality of Service: 7 Overall Rating: 8 I was heading back from a business trip in Europe with a coworker, and we were spending the day in Germany. We were in the Rhine River Valley in Sankt Goar near Rhinefels Castle (a wonderful spot to visit if you are in the area!), and we were hungry for lunch. Restaurant Zur Loreley had a great looking menu with authentic German food and great reviews to go along with it, so we decided to check it out for lunch. Like many (most?) restaurants in Germany, they have a single brewery they are linked with, so I got the pils on draft (sadly the name currently escapes me). It was very light but had a great flavor, and it served to remind me yet again how fabulous German beers are. I decided to start with a soup, and the tomato cream soup sounded wonderful. It was indeed wonderful--thick, creamy, with a nice robust flavor. It was the perfect start to the meal. I should also mention that the menus were available both in German and in English, which helped quite a bit since I don't speak German. We ordered 2 entrees for lunch. My coworker ordered a schnitzel which came covered with mushrooms and accompanied with pan fried potatoes. I decided that I was pretty hungry so ordered a 3 filet sampler that included 2 pork loin filets and a beef loin filet, served with mushrooms, pan fried potatoes, broccoli, carrots, and other veggies. The schnitzel had a great flavor, with a light fried batter outside and very tender, moist meat on the inside. It tasted amazing with the mushrooms, which were perfectly tender. The potatoes were also quite nice, with just the right texture and crisp. The 3 filets were prepared very well, again being tender and juicy and satisfying the taste buds. The mushrooms and potatoes were identical to the ones that came with the other dish, but they were equally yummy. The vegetables were also good and made for a well-rounded meal. The restaurant is attached to a hotel and was very quaint and homey inside. The service was very friendly and accommodating, particularly for 2 Americans who don't speak German. Not only was the food delicious, but the portions were quite large. They do offer smaller versions of plates if you are not so hungry, and we could see why given that we were unable to finish our food. The prices were also quite reasonable. Hotel restaurants are generally stereotyped (at least in the US) as being mediocre, but this certainly did not apply to Restaurant Zur Loreley. If you are visiting Rheinfels Castle (or just happen to be in the area), you should definitely stop by, as you will not be disappointed.
