The telford college is a new building and has a great studio space for courses such as millinery. This course takes you through the making of a felt hat, straw hat and fabric hat....(I've just completed my felt hat!). If you are not looking to dedicate so much time to the art of millinery keep your eyes and ears peeled for courses run by a charity called Hat Walk. These two day courses are run through the telford college and leaves you with a fabulously fun hat or two!

If you ever get a chance to have a look round do, but sitting exams in the grand hall with portraits of famous physicians staring down at you is quite intimidating.

A great venue for talks and lectures…read more There's one fantastic lecture theatre which is kitted out with all you need including a massive projector screen and microphones scattered through the audience. These make chairing a session a million times easier as you don't have to wear yourself out legging it up and down the stairs with a mic. Other rooms can be used as lecture halls and I must say that I felt well fancy giving a talk surrounded by fancy art and statues in a room with amazing awnings, blood red carpet and fancy gold fixtures. The catering they provide is also great. I've been here several times and it's usually a selection of sandwiches that's vast enough to suit everyone, some fresh fruit and various biscuits. The coffee is good, which is generally not expected when they're catering for 150 odd people! The foyer behind the lecture theatre is big, not decorated all the best but it's big and comfortable. There's a big cloakroom just off it, which is convenient but I imagine not very secure. When there's a lot of people wandering in and out of the building it would be super easy to slip in there unnoticed. Finally, the bathrooms are awesome...they're super fancy!

Craiglockhart campus is a modern University. The building itself is open plan providing different…read morestudy areas. It encompasses a very popular Starbucks which is always very busy particularly between lectures. I have found the staff to always be helpful and supportive. There is an open-door policy so one can get help and advice at any time. The computer facilities become full during the day and it is sometimes hard to find a computer particularly when one really needs one. There is ample parking but this is regulated by the University. As a result one must pay £48 to park in the car park. This pushes students out into neighbouring streets which I dont believe is favoured by local residents. I would recommend Napier Craiglockhart to anyone. This building is mainly for management, accountancy and law with other subjects being taught at other campuses. There is plenty of transport from the city centre as there is a bus which comes on campus. The staff offer real support making an enjoyable learning experience.

As you would expect for an informatics forum it is kitted out with good levels of equipment the students that frequent it. The Informatics forum's main purpose is to be the hub for informatics students (of course), but also the humanities and social sciences department and the student support service department. The design of the building is really great and is a true example of how modern architecture can really complement and cohabit amongst older buildings.

But somehow, probably because it houses people who might actually have careers (instead of the plain ol' geeks at the Dugald Stewart side of the establishment), it's actually way snazzier than DSB. I only know this because I went into the Informatics Forum for one of those hour-long above-minimum-wage experiments that you do when you're unemployed and desperate. They had paintings! Or, one painting. But that's one more than I've ever seen in the Dugald Stewart Building.

As a student at this university for the last three years I have developed my fair share of opinions. I am fully aware most people like to turn their nose up at QMU and don't class it as a "real" university. Heck half the students still mock it. I am under no illusions about QMU and am well aware that it doesn't take a genius to get into this university. That being said, it is actually a decent university. In some ways. The Halls are great. Flats of up to six bedrooms which are all en suite and have huge kitchens. All you need for causing all sort of trouble. As the uni is located on the edge of Musselburgh, this means there is very little to do so while living in halls you have to find your own entertainment. For me that included the purchase of mini scooters, a sledge and space hopper. The union is a tiny little building with one bar. Sells decent enough food, but is nowhere near the same level as other University unions (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee). I am an events management student so I can't comment on the social sciences or nursing courses. I spend hardly any time in class, and when I do it is usually business modules. Great for people who are lazy and like to spend most of their time in bed. The events part of the course is the better part. The events lecturers are some of the better in the university and as the university is so small it allows you to develop a relationship with your lecturer (not that kind). It also means emails are replied to quickly and arranging meetings is a painless experience. The events classes are probably the hardest, and no before you ask event management is not planning T in the Park. Well planning T in the Park does involve event management, but this course is so much more than that. The business modules are usually pretty bad. Generally thrown together at the last minute and with no clear direction, it gets to assessment time and my classmates Facebook status's are filled with panic. The lecturers can be okay, but there are some who make no secret of their dislike for the university. If you are thinking of becoming a student at QMU do your research. Figure out how good it is for your course and phone up the uni and talk to the lecturers. In some ways QMU is good, in some ways it is not. It has a new principle so I am hopeful that the university will improve and deal with the issues it has. The fact that it is such a small uni is a good thing, as is the modern campus.
