You close your eyes and feel the scorching sun washing over you and the sounds of not so distant waves are drumming out a relaxing beat against the shore. That was my welcome to the Bervie guesthouse on Achill. The place itself is beautiful with years and years of love infused into it. The rooms are bright, airy, clean and comfortable and the hosts are lovely people. They do an awesome deal for a weekend B and B with one night's dinner for around 160 Euro. This is all great but I haven't even started talking about the food yet. The breakfast was out of this world. Proper full Irish and every ingredient tasted fresh and delicious. There was a great buffet option as well with cereals and fruit etc as well as some lighter options like poached eggs and Salmon. Then we had the dinner. Wow. Best food I have tasted in an age. I had confit duck, lamb sausage and haricot beans for starter. Steak, amazingly done, with mushrooms infused with wine and veg and mash and roast spuds. Followed by a passionfruit crème brulee. I don't think I can even describe how good this food was but you can see the pics for a rough idea! The whole guest house is superb, right on the beach in one of the most spectacular spots in Ireland. I will be back, lots and lots. I cannot recommend this place enough! I'd give it 10 Stars if I could!

It had been unseasonably hot for Ireland so I had not packed adequately and purchased some shorts and t-shirts for the 85 degree weather. By the time we arrived in Keel I had worn all the clothes I purchased so we asked Elizabeth if there was a laundry nearby to wash them. She would not think of it, she took the clothes and washed them for us. I'm extremely particular about my laundry, I only air dry my clothes and Elizabeth was so accommodating to hang them outside to dry. The room was perfect and only finished second to the amazing views from our window. The beds were as comfortable as home, the beach is only 200 meters outside your door, and Elizabeth even got us a bottle of wine to enjoy as we watched the night fade over the ocean. We could not have asked for a more perfect experience.

We'd been calling to let them know we'd be a late and they were so nice that it really took the worry out of the last bit of the drive. We booked the 3 room suite between 3 of us and it was absolutely gorgeous! Each room decorated to a really high standard and we even had our own sitting room in the house. We started a bottle of wine the 1st night and were using whatever tumblers were available (we're classy like that), but the 2nd night they had left 3 wine glasses beside the remaining wine for us! Breakfast was absolutely gorgeous. Really recommend the full Irish breakfast. They also had a little buffet with fruit, cereal and yoghurts. And not just any yoghurts, the fancy crunch corner ones! The wifi is free, but you must ask for the code. It works best from the new building. The B&B was originally just the house, but when their son took over he built a 2nd building with more rooms and a lovely dining and sofa area for breakfast. Would very much recommend it for stays on Achill or for the Greenway cycle. We did the Greenway and hired bikes out in Mulranny because we wanted to start there. We didn't get to see the bikes first though and they ended up being poor quality. Achill Lodge rent and sell bikes and you can see that they are well maintained before you spend your money. So would recommend their bike rental also if the location suits you.

Additionally, we had dinner one evening at Ferndale that was expertly prepared and served by the proprietors, Jon and Alex. It was a lovely alternative to going into town, and the fresh halibut, scallops and prawns that Jon cooked for us was one of the best meals we had ever had in Ireland, not to mention the fabulous chocolate mousse and deconstructed Bailey's Irish Cream cheesecake he made us for dessert! Last, but certainly not least, Jon and Alex were absolutely the best hosts! They managed to make us feel like family, yet pampered guests at the same time-No easy feat! Their attention to detail in terms of our comfort, and their wit and warmth were a winning combination. We will most definitely be returning!

We selected The Red River Lodge based on the Four Star rating by AA, as well as the friendly response to our inquiries by the proprietor Dolores. We were not in any way disappointed. The house is lovely, and the grounds beautiful and well kept. The first thing to strike us was the quiet and the smell of the fresh country air. I wish we could have bottled both! Breakfasts are traditional Irish with some modern additions, and everything was delicious. The host is attentive and extremely accommodating. Rooms are spacious, well lit, astonishingly clean, and very comfortable. You won't want to leave! The views of the Moy River will set up some wonderful photo opportunities. It's about a mile out of town (2KM) so you might need a car if you want to experience Ballina, but there are taxi services available in town. If you are movement impaired, be aware that this is a home and may not be wheelchair friendly, but there are ground level rooms available. Prices are very reasonable. It's not open year round, but when it is, you could not do better than to stay here!

We turned up on her doorstep one evening after seeing the lone five star review for Red River Lodge on Yelp. And we were so glad we did. The house is beautiful. Bright and welcoming, but still has a family house feel. At the front there is a really nice lawn and garden. You can also see the Moy River from the location. Dolores showed us around the house that was open to guests to use. There was very comfortable front room that looked extremely inviting. The breakfast room was fabulous and bright. I could call it a conservatory, but it was more than just that. The front hall, a room in itself, had water and tea station that you could help yourself too. The bedroom was comfy and warm. The bed was dressed fabulously in a plush throw and pillows. You could also see the river from here too, as it was at the front of the house. For breakfast, well that was top notch. There was a choice of Full Irish, scrambled egg or pancakes which you picked the night before. I went for the pancakes. Delicious. Coffee was excellent also. I said at the start that Dolores was a treasure. She is. She had so much to recommend to us in the area, which included a map of the town. She told us where to go for dinner and it turned out to be the best meal of our whole trip (see my Brennan's Lane review). We had a really nice conversation after breakfast before we departed. A lovely lady. It was 65 EUR for the two of us for one night and it was worth every cent.

First, this charming boutique B&B is steps away from Quay Street--no need for a car or taxi. There are too many great restaurants and bars so close by that it's a shame I couldn't visit them all. It's also in walking distance to the bus stop that takes you to the Aran Island ferries. Sorcha Malloy, the owner and hostess has an eye for creating clean, cozy, minimalist spaces in the historic buildings that make up the Heron's Rest. Rooms are outfitted with down pillows, crisp sheets, and comfy white duvets with splashes of color from a vintage table cloth or Indian silk throw. Coffee and tea are provided, as is a rockin' crystal decanter of port for a pre-bedtime nip. The view from every room is gorgeous--swans, fishing boats, and the B&B's namesake (Arthur the Heron) float in the Galway Bay just a few feet away from your window. Rooms are stocked with robes, slippers, hair dryers, and a TV (I didn't watch the tube but noticed it was small--if TV is important to you when you travel, this place might not be for you). The bathrooms are stocked with natural bath products. Bathrooms have been renovated and are modern; showers have plenty of hot water. The two single rooms share a bath but Sorcha had plans to renovate that floor making one large room with private bath. All other rooms have their own bath. I saved the best for last--breakfast. Sorcha is a trained chef and the breakfasts were some of the best meals we had in Ireland. We started with a cheese tray featuring local cheeses, honey, and spreads. There were homemade savory scones and red currant & lemon muffins to die for. Each guest received a pot of freshly-made espresso (or tea) and a pitcher of steamed milk. Then Sorcha brought out freshly-squeezed OJ and an incredible fruit bowl with seasonal fruit (ours had kiwi, watermelon, blackberries, red currants, pomegranate seeds, strawberries--I could go on...). Local yogurt and flax were offered, too. And those were just our starters--next we chose between breakfast burritos with avocado and homemade salsa, local salmon-topped eggs Benedict, banana pancakes with creme fraiche, and a few other creatively inspired breakfast treats. Needless to say, breakfast carried us through each day until cocktail hour around 4:00. Prices were reasonable, especially given the gourmet food we were treated to. My friend and I paid $90 USD a night for private single rooms and we shared a bath. Our other friend splurged, wanting a double room with private bath, and paid around $180 (it would have been $100 a person for two people sharing). There was also free wireless throughout the inn. Finally, there are a few things I should note that didn't bother me but might bother some. Like I mentioned, don't expect high-def TV with cable; the inn is in the heart of Galway so some might find the streets a little loud (my white noise app blocked it all); and the rooms I saw were small based on what Americans are used to. Do yourself a favor and skip Galway chains like Jury's Inn or the Radisson and experience the charming Heron's Rest Inn!

The house is in a wonderful location, as it overlooks the water for a peaceful retreat. However, it is just a short walk to shopping and anything else you could possibly want to experience. Sorcha was the perfect hostess and prepares the most incredible meals anyone could ever want. Her training as a chef was witnessed, as she prepared breakfast for us each morning, and we were never dissappointed. I tried a different breakfast each morning and they were each outstanding. You will not be dissappointed if you stay here. It was more that I imagined it would be. If I ever make it back to Ireland and Galway, I will definitely stay here again. Thank you Sorcha!
