2020-11-08 Red Oaks County Park. Madison Heights, MI…read more I've been taking my kids to this playground for years, and I think it's one that is highly underrated. Don't know why I never tried checking in on Yelp, but now that I have, I see that it's not even on the map! Tucked away behind the Red Oaks Youth Soccer Complex, the entrance to the parking lot is off of Dartmouth Street which is accessed by either John R (to the east) or 12 Mile Rd. (to the south). At the corner of John R and 12 Mi is a large plaza with a Lowe's and the new BJ's Wholesale Club. This park is located north of BJ's. The Soccer Complex is visible from John R, but the playground isn't. Being primarily a soccer complex, there is lots (and I mean plenty!) of free parking. The complex is open to the public for all to enjoy; however, priority does go to scheduled matches. There is a snack bar, but that's only open when there are scheduled events. On the backside of the snack bar is a small sheltered pavilion overlooking the playground. From the parking lot, the playground does not appear to be very large; however, it you take a walk through it, it's bigger than it appears from your car. There is also an area for athletes to warm up or train (pull ups, inclined sit ups or push ups). The park also has all the elements of a typical playground; swings, slides, monkey bars, hanging wheels (roundabouts, not merry-go-rounds), rope cargo net, balance chain and bongo bridge climbers, and the list goes on. This park is rated for kids 5-12 years old, but there is a small play structure suitable for those under 5 (see pics). The playground is never busy (at least not when we come), probably because not many are aware of it, and I really think it's one of the better ones in Madison Heights. The venue is nice and compact. Parking is literally steps away, and there's a sheltered pavilion for parents to sit and watch over their kids. If you have young'uns and you're in the area, you need to check it out! 5 stars. For now, you can check out my pics! Ooops, almost forgot to talk about COVID. Here are the particulars: They do not have modified hours Masks are required per MI DHHS Emergency Order when social distancing can't be maintained They do not provide masks They do not provide hand sanitizer Restrooms are open from 10:00 to dusk Playground is NOT sanitized daily Social distancing signs posted Pavilion has large metal picnic tables which are not sanitized daily If you would like to experience more, come dine-with-me.yelp.com I'd love to have your company... Bon Appétit!

This is an okay park to take my nephew for some sandbox time or to play on the playground some,…read moremostly alone, as there are few kids ever to play there at any given time. It's a decent sized park for RO. There's a sidewalk around the perimeter as it borders Main Street and Crooks Street. The slightly newer playground is okay but never well maintained and there's an older wooden playground that is made of wood and looks like it's seen better days. Most kids are not allowed on it since they are liable to get splinters on it. The sandbox is a decent size but is almost always filthy and dirty there, this is a highly neglected to be sure. This park is also known as frisbee park and is most frequented for that particular reason and not much else. There is a decent size hill for the kids to run around on but I think it's mostly for the frisbeers. I don't generally go walking around this park much since I don't ever want to get hit with a errant frisbee.

I come to this park maybe once a week with my boyfriend who plays disc golf. It's located in royal…read moreoak and is very large. Has a nice swing set area for kids to play on. They allow dogs which is a plus. It's a nice disc golf area for being in town. The only down side would be sharing baskets with other tee pads which can have you waiting around some. And as you can see in the picture there is so many leaves it's easy to lose a disc. But overall if you're looking for somewhere close to go it's worth stopping by.

Normandy Oaks Park is nature sanctuary inside the urban Royal Oak…read more Inside the park, there is wide paved path loop (around 1 mile) great for walking, running, biking, and skating. Along the path were plenty of wildflowers, which made for the perfect nature walk. However, I prefer to walk in the evenings since there aren't many shaded areas along the path. Lots of green infrastructure is embedded into this park like bioswales, an underground drainage system, and a retention pond to help manage stormwater. These naturally attract lots of wildlife. During my walks, I've seen turtles, frogs, ducks, and deer. To top it all off, Normandy Oaks Park has plenty of areas for play like a fenced in splash pad, soccer fields, and climbing play structure. The splash pad is open from 9 am - 9 pm Memorial Day to Labor Day. A bonus for parents: There are plenty of picnic tables and pavilion with a drinking fountain and restrooms near by. I can't wait to come back soon!

Disappointed in Normandy Oaks. I thought we were getting a 40 acre park but we got 20 acres of park…read moreand 20 acres of vacant field. The turf around the picnic shelter & splash pad is OK, the soccer fields started out good but are now disaster due to lack of maintenance. The rest of the mowed grass areas are very poor. The rest of the park they basically just stopped mowing the golf course. I was expecting a large elaborate playlot but didn't get one. One of the smallest playlots in the city. At the bottom of the sled hill is a tree which in good sledding conditions would be close enough for kids to hit. It should be removed.
