It was hot though, and while lots of sheltering trees could be found around the perimeter it would have been nice if more shady things had been integrated into the play area. But, it had lots of stuff I had never seen before like rocking benches, cool sliding boards, and safe merry-go-rounds (ahh, bring back the days of the old metal ones that flung you off if you let go!). No dogs allowed on the playground itself, so if you bring one you are stuck also sitting along the edges watching.

First, it has plenty of hiking trails and paths for scenic walks for families, including dogs. It has two well-maintained tennis courts, a basketball court, a baseball field, pool and plenty of picnic tables. It even has a big playground for the kids, and a pool. I love taking a walk at the paths, especially towards the top of the hill, and towards the back of the golf course. The park is dog friendly as well. I love taking my pup for a walk here. If you go now, they have banners honoring local military veterans, and war heroes. They also just added a memorial for heroes who served in wars. It's definitely worth checking out! I dragged my son in with me and he wants to make a trip back to this park already. There are multiple softball grounds and has some historic significance which I have no clue. There were other kids there playing football, on scooter, bike, mini motorcycles, softball and some play equipment which looks fairly new.

I can't call it a "large park" because the areas where you can do stuff (a playground, a seven-move fitness area) don't take up a lot of real estate. It is, perhaps, a perfect sized park. We came for the playground area and it was a lot of fun. There were many slides and steps for kids to climb on, but I can say it wasn't built for toddlers. School age kids would appreciate the reach and engage with the challenges more. There was some candy on the ground (and bees... boo) but we were able to avoid them. Swings and ladders provided lots of areas to play. It is built on wood chips, not that rubber stuff, if that matters to you. It looks like this area was an old school, as a very large round paved area could have been a running track at one time. Another large, rectangular area seems the right size for a basketball court area. Now, both are just flat pavement. The area is bounded by several hills which likely would be great for sledding. There were also several picnic tables for snacking on, and a water fountain which was sadly enclosed with a fence. Parking was plentiful. This seems like such a nice playground in seemingly the middle of nowhere. I hope more kids discover and enjoy it.

Located on the southern portion is an amphitheater of sorts (named "Jennings Landing") where Alive at Five concerts are held in the summer. A beautiful bridge goes over the train tracks and I-787 to connect this area with downtown Albany. There is also a couple of small ponds, a playground area for the children, and open spaces for Frisbee or picnics. The "Mohawk Hudson Hike-Bike Trail" continues north from here. I find driving into the area a little confusing as Quay Street is one-way only and you have to be heading north on I-787. I find it much easier to park at the free lots on Water Street and walk in. Just a word of caution... It can get a bit dark at night and there are some "regulars" who stay here throughout the night.

In addition, the park used to have a stage, but it fell down and was never replaced. The basketball hoops are terrible, the nets are gone and the rims are crooked. Teenagers come here and trash the place with drugs, but nobody does anything about it. I would be scared to actually bring my kids here. Furthermore, a carnival called Summerfest comes here in the summer, but it's ruined by fights, drugs, and alcohol. Butler Park could be a fine place to spend time at, but it's overrun by drugs.
