Have been to the Rose Parade multiple times before but have never checked out Rose Parade Bandfest until this year. What an extraordinary way to enjoy the bands that are performing at the Rose Parade! We will definitely be back next year... 5 stars!
There are three different shows to choose from; the first show taking place 3 days before the parade at 1:30 pm, and the second and third shows taking place 2 days before the parade, at 9 am and 2 pm respectively. All the bands performing at the Rose Parade are assigned to one of three shows, with the exception of the Pasadena City College Honor Band, which performs in and opens all three shows. We chose to go to the third show since it featured international bands all the way from Japan, the Gifu Shogyo High School Green Band, and from Mexico, the Veracruz Buhos Marching Band. In addition, the third show also featured the two university bands from the two competing Rose Bowl teams, USC and Penn State. A list of assigned bands for each Bandfest show, as well as more information, can be found at https://www.tournamentofroses.com/events/bandfest.
I've always felt that the bands in the Rose Parade pass by the crowd so fast during the actual parade and that there's no time at all to really enjoy and appreciate the music. Bandfest gives you the time to enjoy each band's beautiful music as well as each band's intricate and precise field marching formations. It doesn't take long to realize that each band must have put in countless hours and hours of practice and hard work.
Each band performs 4 to 5 song arrangements during each show, and for $15 per person, you'll definitely get your money's worth! Children 5 and under are free. Parking is also free at Pasadena City College, and the parking structure is right next to the football stadium, where Bandfest is held. Tickets for Bandfest can be purchased online at http://store.sharpseating.com/.
My best tip is to arrive early, maybe at least an hour before the show. There are two grandstands in the football stadium for general admission seating, and the main grandstand is seated and filled up first. Once the main grandstand is full, the smaller grandstand on the opposite side of the football field is seated. Almost all of the songs that the bands perform are done facing the main grandstand, not the smaller grandstand. You don't want the bands turned away from you for most of the show. Luckily, we got seated in the main grandstand, which filled up 40 minutes or so before the start of the show!
