Damn, I had to travel all the way to Berlin for some serious Jamaican food! No lie I seriously can taste the country at this 8restaurant. First thing I noticed was a Jamaican flag and under a rainbow flag. That in itself warmed my heart. Very Welcoming. Next, you walk into this cozy restaurant that feels like you're in the dining room of a nice Jamaican home. A beautiful picture of what seems to be a relative of the owner over looks the dining area. Simple and beautiful. This is a perfect setting for a date that you want impress with simple elegance. Don't miss the detail of the unique bee hive chandelier. I won't tell you but you'll be impressed again. The Food! Wow wow wow. Fish in coconut sauce, potatoes, vegan spazel w a Jamaican twist, fried mac and cheese!!!, jerk chicken thats hotttttt! but melts in your mouth, and cornbread! The fish was seasoned with somebodies Jamaican mamas cupboard. It was sort of mashed into a almost chunky soup. But a must try! So delicious the way the sauce and soup made this flavorful party in your mouth. Salty and creamy. The fried mac and cheese.... damn. Nuff said. Be careful with the jerk it's spppppiiceyyy! But the chicken melts in your mouth. Omg a perfect jerk recipe!!! The potatoes were my favorite!! Yummy crispy but chewy well seasoned golding potatoes. Exquisite. Everything was excellent! I was visiting a friend from NYC and he insisted we have dinner here! I am so happy he did! Kirk and staff made our visit so memorable and enjoyable! From cocktails, corn bread, fried mac and cheese and spicy caleta sauce, EVERYTHING was so savory, sweet, spicy and just f*cking delicious. We could have sat outside and kept ordering food all night. Highly recommend Curry Goat, Jerk Chicken, any specials they have will be on point! Wash it down with a cold Red Stripe and one of their deliciously sweet shots. We were very excited to come to RosaCaleta, but also very disappointed. Of everything we wanted to order not half of it was available. So we had our second (or third) choice dishes. I had the fish stew, but had a hard time finding the fish. It was full of gnocci. But there was also rice on the side, so the combination wasn't that great. The service was all right, everyone was friendly, although we were put a bit in a corner of the room. Table and menu weren't very clean. Overall not a very bad experience, but in most places in Berlin you can eat cheaper and tastier. read more

Let's not start with the service, it would easily underperform any American's expectation. I was set on the Spicy Guava Chicken after reading about it on Yelp; however, upon the server reminding me it was spicy--which I knew & had accepted mentally--I backed down & got the Jerk Chicken instead to be safe since I usually avoid super spicy food. It was pretty average on the spice scale so I'm wishing I'd actually gone with my gut; the overall meal was pretty basic. Came here for Christmas dinner. Food was pretty good but literally everything else was terrible. It was about 80 degrees in the restaurant, and they sat us on literal lawn furniture really close together. There was a sketchy sign written on the door that they're suddenly cash only. They said go to a nearby ATM. We did and there was a bum living in front of it harassing passersby. No thanks. We figured we'd pay cash and not buy alcohol to avoid the ATM situation. Then, while we were eating Christmas dinner, another bum walked into the restaurant. He started passing out newspapers and asking everyone for money. Not only did the staff notice, they let the bum walk to every. Single. Table. And ask for money. I gave the staff a look and pointed. They ignored me. I paid $50 a plate for this dinner. The food here was fabulous and the staff even more so! We were here in a big group and it was difficult to manage all of our various requests but they did a great job. We were sat outside and also given lovely soft blankets, when requested by those (like me) who get a bit chilly! I've never been lucky enough to have veggie/tofu-based Jamaican food and it was spicy and fiery and fun! There was the typical confusion over the bill when it came, as we were such a large group, but the staff were kind enough to be patient with us. I got a tip that the food here was good and the decor and service really laid back. It's owned by Jamaicans and serves Jamaican food. I had a dish called Jamaican Run Down made with with Salt cod, coconut milk, greens and potatoes. Excellent. I had other dishes as well, but can't remember their names because the house wine was so inexpensive and good, it may have affected my recall. I know I came back a few days later, so it must have been good. Check before you go because I think it's closed on Monday and Tuesday. Oh, I forgot to mention the cornbread and deserts. I have to agree wholeheartedly with mintje below. Rosa Caleta is a restaurant for people who don't know how to cook. I hate to give this place a bad review, because the people that work there are absolutely lovely, even the one chubby German waitress who was kind of, well, typical Berlin service attitude, they were all still very nice. Attentive to our needs. Not terribly well-organized on the night we were there with a large group. But that's not so much of a big deal. As mintje says, the food is edible but not mind-blowing. You can get a tastier and more tender piece of meat in a cafeteria. It's true. We were with a large group, so I was able to sample pretty much everything on the menu. I was not blown away by anything. The friends I was there with absolutely adore Rosa Caleta and that night was no exception. They were positively glowing with pleasure and enjoyment. The only thing I can say to that is, not many of them are big on cooking. You can sell just about anything to a person who couldn't even dream of doing any better. But if you have a bit of an idea about food, and especially if you have a healthy appetite, you will be disappointed. The price for both the amount and quality of food is just... well, I couldn't be mad at them, because they were all so friendly and lovely, I wanted to be friends with them. But they served me an effing cold and small portion of mediocre food and charged an arm and a leg for it. I think, if you have an interest in this sort of food, you should go check it out sometime, because you may just love it. Everyone I know who's been there says the food is out of this world. Over-Priced Food Lacks Flavour, Soul. Despite others' rave reviews, the flavours at RosaCaleta lack the vibrance expected of Caribbean cuisine. I'd wager there's no Jamaican grannie running this kitchen. The tagline Jamaican/European Fusion Cuisine also does not accurately describe the menu. They serve some spicy dishes (and they ARE spicy) with traditional Jamaican recipes, and there are some dishes that sound slightly-influenced by European cuisine. However, unlike the impression their website gives, they are not serving refined Jamaican/European Fusion haute-cuisine in the way that a French/Asian Fusion restaurant might be serving Fusion (read: experimental) cuisine. On 2011-08-03, here's what we had (and thought about it): 0. House-made bread: cornbread and poppie-seed bread. Dry and flavorless, both. 1. Corn Soup. It was a bland vegetable soup with 3 pieces of corn-on-the-cob plopped in the middle. 2. Sweet Potato Ginger Soup. OK, but nothing exceptional. 3. Spicy Pork with Corn Stuffing. Decent, but again, it had a strange mix of quite bland flavours that made for a grey-tasting, moderately spicy Kassler-like dish. 4. Fiery Guava Jerk Chicken. SPICY, but not sure there was any guava in the dish at all. One thing's for sure, it delivered on the spicy, perhaps too well. 5. Mango Dream. Avoid. Tasted of chemicals and artificial flavours. One squirt of mango sauce on top didn't make my dreams-come-true. Overall, I'd discourage you from eating at RosaCaleta. It's a pleasant place in a pleasant neighbourhood, and we had a pleasant visit; the food is simply not good, and it's certainly not worth the price. If you just want to eat at a good place near RosaCaleta, check out Goldener Hahn instead (just around the corner). If you want good Caribbean food and don't mind a trek, check out Ya-Man in Moabit. read more

My girlfriend researched a few places in Berlin beforehand, finding glowing reviews for RosaCaleta. We searched it out (Caribbean fusion sounds so cool, doesn't it?) as it was near our hotel. First night it was empty, so we decided not to try it. Next night, still not that busy, but we went anyway. And we were so glad we did! It's a cool Jamaican place that is quite creative with food, employs good wine and excellent cocktails, and desserts that you shouldn't miss. Overall, the service was great (English was solid and the owner had great English - and was also quite a cool guy), food was incredible, and the atmosphere is chill and interesting. We started with some red wine suggested by the owner, who really knew his stuff. We loved it - exactly what we asked for. The wine bottles were more expensive than most the restaurants, but I think worth it. For dinner, I had a spicy pork/sweet potato dish with this incredible sauce that pretty incredible. My girlfriend had some pumpkin raviolis that were also great. They were creative, flavorful, and plenty of food. We finished with some cocktails (including the Sweet Annie?) which were really well made and tasty, as well as the mango tiramisu for dessert. It tasted more strongly of mango than tiramisu (I was hoping for the other way around), but was great - and again, really creative. Overall, loved it. The staff is kind and welcoming and the food an interesting alternative in Berlins restaurant eco-system. I had a great piece of pork and enjoyed the sweet and sour sauce that came with it.
