I loved this place. They are very welcoming (s/o to Angela the owner) and they have something for everyone. The vibes are great here. It's also the first consignment shop on the south side of Chicago (that I know of). I highly recommend checking them out. I found some great stuff!

Beyond the disorganization and extremely high prices, the most troubling issue is how customers are treated, especially those who are African American, Hispanic, or simply appear as if they don't belong in the eyes of the staff. There is a repeated pattern of racial profiling and false accusations. I've personally witnessed several incidents where African American customers were followed around the store, accused of switching price tags without cause, and treated with clear suspicion. In one incident, a young woman held clothes up to herself over her outfit to see if they would fit, since there is no dressing room. A staff member immediately accused her of trying to steal. That level of hostility is completely inappropriate. This is a thrift store, not a high-security facility. Ironically, most of the staff are minorities themselves, primarily Hispanic women who have worked there for many years. Yet they continue to target their own community, along with African American customers, creating an environment of constant judgment and control. One particular woman, who has been there the longest, insists on always being at the register and refuses to let anyone else take that position. That kind of control is concerning, especially when it seems to be tied to who gets followed, accused, or mistreated. On a personal note, I experienced this behavior when visiting with my boyfriend, who is African American and a practicing attorney. He was followed through the store and accused of altering a price tag, with absolutely no evidence. When we raised our concerns to staff, we were completely brushed off. In addition to the unacceptable treatment of customers, I believe the Salvation Army should conduct a full audit of this location. The prices are far beyond what is reasonable for a secondhand store, and there are real concerns about whether items are being priced and tracked appropriately. The way some employees behave, it is as if they are personally losing money. There is no other explanation for the level of aggression and defensiveness we have seen from them. This store does not reflect the values the Salvation Army promotes. The staff operate in a culture of suspicion and blame, treating people especially minority shoppers as if they are criminals rather than individuals simply looking for affordable clothing and household items. I sincerely urge Salvation Army leadership to investigate this location thoroughly. What is happening here is not only unacceptable, it is harmful to the very communities the organization is meant to serve.

There was an abundance of shoes, clothing, appliances, housewares, electronics and toys. I spotted a large vintage mid century ashtray and a couple of vintage planters that I scooped up, but didn't have time to dig further. Note - all items are sold 'as is', so make sure you test and inspect them thoroughly.

I was excited to pay a visit and when I did on August 16, I must say I was so floored at all the great buys and excellent quality the items there were. My first visit I fell in love with the owner, Ms. Dorian. She is the absolute best! If you are looking for something, she will do everything to find it for you. I have been here several times. My friend had an open house to get the word out about the business. We had big fun there. My friend was a personal fashion consultant and helped many ladies find cute items as well as having the skill of putting together full outfits. I have bought things from tops, bottoms, jackets, skirts, jumpsuits, dresses, jewelry and even a laptop briefcase. I really love that she has a great selection of African styled clothing there. Items are very reasonably priced. Dorian has great sales from everything you can fit in a bag to $5 holla specials. Make sure you check her Instagram page and sign up for notifications to find the latest sales she has going on. I look forward to every visit I make here because I know I'm going to find something beautiful and unique. Great job! A+++!

Often times the selections don't necessarily reflect the type of neighborhood where the merchandize is held, but this principle appeared to be somewhat defied today. The aisles were a bit narrow. There weren't too many people shopping, but some of the "miscellaneous" items were sort of fragmented and shattered. I wonder if anyone would want to take broken pieces home, unless there is a creative use out of any of these. There were vinyls on the ground, decapitated dolls in the bins, and abandoned teddy bears that needs be revived in loving households. There weren't any organizations on anything really. I guess you can truly have a pleasure of thrift shopping, because you will need to thrift diligently in this location. If you don't live in or close to this neighborhood, head to other locations before coming to this one. It's one of the south-side locations, even though the CTA bus 47 (47th.; going from Hyde Park--Bronzeville--Back of the Yard--Brighton Park--Gage Park--Midway) and the CTA 49 (Western) buses are conveniently accessible. The actual location is on the 47th. St. and S. Maplewood in the Brighton Park neighborhood, just FYI.
