Don't let the negative reviews from the two lunatic people who are pissed they didn't get their crappy consignment items accepted for sale dissuade you from checking out Root. Calling the owner "full of herself" because she gets to choose what she accepts to sell in her own store is pretty good proof you aren't getting a review from a reasonable person. Also, the parking here is totally fine. You can usually get a spot right in front of the store or directly across the street. It is metered but I stopped paying because I've never seen anyone ticketing there. As for the store, I have lived in the neighborhood since June 2021 and I have purchased multiple items. There is always new, interesting pieces coming in and I stop in every couple of weeks. The owner and her staff are welcoming and allow you to browse without bothering you. The prices are extremely fair. This is a great, neighborhood shop that we all should support. read more

My sister e and I had to sadly deal with clearing out a lit of my sister's clothing after her passing we both came in from other states. Our little sister was a "Fashionesta" size 2-4. The owner ans staff were very receptive and appreciative. We received payments by mil in a timely fashion as clothing and shoes were sold. This is hands down my favorite shop. I consign here and I also shop here. This place is incredible for unique housewares, lighting, and even clothing and accessories. I have been consigning here for a few years and yes, you may have to do your own due diligence with inventory nowadays with them, but that's a good thing. They used to do a generic inventory but stuff is coming in and going out so fast that they now just send you a check or you can keep it for credit towards future shopping. It's one of the higher paying percentages as far as consignment. Oh and they have great and varied taste so your stuff isn't amongst a ton of junk. Her prices are reasonable and that's why there is such a high turnover of goods which makes it constantly fresh. It's nice to see that they didn't start getting crazy with their prices as they get more and more business. I try to pop in every couple weeks and it's ALWAYS different. I've also purchased boots, shoes, sneakers and clothing items from there. I continuously receive compliments on items purchased from Root. If Yelp puts this store is in the thrift store category, then its the classiest thrift store I have ever stepped foot in. They have gently used high quality items. Root is constantly getting new items, it is never stale. They carry vintage furniture pieces and other eclectic decorative items. We bought a very nice dresser here last summer and a cute little desk in the fall. I am still kicking myself for not buying the comfiest little baker love seat they had. Also, I have consigned a few items here myself. They always reasonably price everything and are realistic about what will sell and what won't. I bought a china cabinet, and my movers backed out at the last minute. The owner would not hold it for more than a week or refund my money. She just said "there are other movers" and walked away from me. Unfortunately, I work 12 hour nights in ICU and a lot of overtime because of the pandemic, so I won't be able to arrange transport with the stores limited hours. She keeps my $100 and I have no china cabinet. This store is not a good choice if you have a job and a tight schedule. read more

First and foremost, I love consignment shops and I would go out of the Beverly community and shop on the North Side for consignment shops, but I decided to stay South and give the dollars locally. Today was my last time of ever stepping foot inside of Root. The owner have two business faces she show, one for her Caucasian customers and one for her African American customers. I have frequented the store many times and when African American customers are in the store, the owner is very nice and polite, when it's a mixture of both where there is predominantly white customers she acts very cooly towards her African American consumers and it shows, the friendliness immediately goes away. I was in the store and I overheard three other women quietly discussing the same thing, and I knew it wasn't me! So I will take my green dollars and give them to another community, because she will be happier with her white patrons who come in her store. read more

I will first start out by saying that the items in this store are actually quite nice and in many instances unique. However shopping and whether or not a customer comes back is about the "experience" not just the item. My very first time at Root (about 6 months ago) was a very pleasant experience and the owner was Professional, helpful, and seemed as if she appreciated that we decided to check her store out. In fact at the time my sister and I were the only ones in the store (we are both African American) Very excited about my finds I just knew that I wanted to come back. Unfortunately the next time I came back there were others in the store (Caucasians at the time) but this time I noticed something seemed a little different about the owner. There was not that friendliness there that I initially saw although it was there for the other customers who were Caucasian. I initially blew it off as I was imagining things, or perhaps being a bit over sensitive. However on subsequent visits at least 5 more times I experienced the same type of vibe (that she could take or leave her African American customers). Today I was in the store and once again I noticed it. Actually I had two people who were also African American with me and without even mentioning what I had been thinking they too expressed a similar feeling. I shop at Root Consignment strictly out of choice not because of need. But after today I have decided that I will no longer support this establishment. Perhaps there are African American customers that will say that was not their experience but I can pretty much guarantee that there are probably a nice number of African Americans who have experienced this but for a various reasons just never wrote a review. It is really sad because the store itself is nice. But I would rather spend my money at an establishment where the owner appreciates me as a customer regardless of who is or isn't in their store at the time. read more

I'm almost hesitant to offer up this review & let everyone in on this secret. However, I'm madly in love with Angela (the owner) & Molly who helps run the place & I want this place to thrive. Let me brag about my spoils! Two Prada skirts: $20 each. Angora/Wool blend Cream colored Via Spiaga winter coat: $7.25 (Normally $200+). Black Michael Kors belted Dress: $20 (Still in stores at $125) . Flax Wool Coat: $60 (Normally $365). I can keep going. Angela is brilliantly selective & only takes things that are adorable. In addition, she has an amazing eye for fabulous furniture & decor. As with all consignment shops, if you don't find something one day, come back the next & you will feast.
