I've been a fan of this place since the original opened as a coffee roaster with a couple of stools for customers to use when buying on site. What sets this place apart is the sheer quality of the coffee and the great refocussing of the experience on the coffee itself. This is something I really appreciate. As a coffee lover it really hits the spot. The choice of foods is really good too, the menu would not be quite as wide ranging as many other places but the focus on quality is great and anything you order should be of top drawer quality. Finally the staff themselves are really nice and the feeling is that they appreciate coffee themselves and rather than seeming aloof about their coffee knowledge, really come across like they really want you to share their love of it. read more

Root & Branch is yet another hipster joint recently opened on Ormeau Road. They specialise in coffee and when I called in today Tuesday 7 June 2016 I was disappointed to find they don't serve breakfasts, only buns and cakes to go with coffee. So I left and went elsewhere for breakfast returning to Root & Branch later for coffee. Staff were extremely helpful and pleasant and I opted for an Ethiopian coffee from their 'brew bar'. I took a seat outside and a few minutes later was served my coffee. Given that it cost £3.20 I was expecting a lot but was disappointed. I particularly like mild coffee but this was just watery and bland. Although it looked pretty served on a wooden board with a glass tumbler and coffee jug, this does not justify the £3.20 price tag. The taste and volume of coffee I received was not worth £3.20. Sadly I'm disappointed and won't return. I'm just growing tired of all these trendy cafes selling grossly overpriced coffee and snacks. My coffee in Root & Branch realistically should have been £2 not £3.20. I was excited to see a nice new cafe open on Ormeau but sadly I am not impressed. There are many other Ormeau Road cafes serving better, cheaper coffee. Additionally Root & Branch don't offer dairy free alternatives such as soya or almond milk which is a let down. read more

Root & Branch is Belfast's new and exciting new speciality coffee roasters just off the Ormeau Road and there's nothing they don't know about coffee! I took the owners suggestion and went for a Ethiopian Hunkute on brew bar and I have to say it's the best coffee that I have had in a loooooong time! The atmosphere is excellent and the decor is spot on. It's a great place to meet friends for a catch up and get a quality brew at the same time. This place is a little different from other coffee shops as they roast their own beans and smells amazing when the roaster is inaction. My husband and I try 2 different coffees and preparation methods a Kenyan aeropress and an Ethiopian hunkute, as the beans are roasted quite lightly the flavour of the coffee is fresh and quite fruity with the Kenyan having a slightly stronger flavour than the Ethiopian. My coffee left a nice aftertaste in my mouth that was still lingering half an hour later, I usually have a little sugar in my coffee but decided to try both without and was pleasantly surprised to enjoy it without the sugar. If you are a fan of rich dark coffee this probably won't be your thing although does make a refreshing change. The lemon & fennel cake was light and moist but left an oiliness in my mouth that wasn't particularly pleasant although the coffee soon cleared it away. The staff are friendly and passionate about what they do and suggested we might prefer an americano for a more intense flavour and shall try that next time. read more

I've known the guys who run this place for a while, so I suppose I might be biased (mind you, if I didn't like their coffee, I just wouldn't have put a review on Yelp). They've done a great job with this place. It's a small spot and not great if you're looking for a place to work. But the coffee is fantastic, and the people who work there are friendly and helpful. Such a cool spot just off the Ormeau road. This little cafe is something different for Belfast. It reminds me of something you'd find wandering around the streets of San Francisco. I love the fact that these guys have brought their own style and approach to the Belfast coffee scene. They could have opened another cafe with the same old mediocre offerings but they didn't. They chose to be unique and follow their passion. Great to see people pushing the boundaries in Belfast. Love it! read more
