I've experienced severe pain in my lower back for many years. Multiple sessions of Physical Therapy, muscle relaxers and rest did not solve the root cause of my issues. I was diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis with acute pain in my left leg rendering me unable to walk/sleep. For many years I suffered from what I described as a "bad back." Typically attributing the discomfort to a lousy night's sleep or too much manual labor. Recently, things got much worse. Whether the sudden onset of intolerable pain was related to my age (early 60s) or the 15-mile bike ride I took that day, didn't matter. What mattered was that I was in agony. I was in extreme pain and in need of immediate relief. A pain management specialist, who happens to be a golf buddy, ordered a scan that revealed extensive stenosis and several ruptures in the lumbar region of my spine. Pain injections would not help. I needed surgery. My Dr. friend said there is one guy and one guy only to go to, Dr. Ronjon Paul. Dr. Paul is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in the spine. Dr. Paul has the top-notch education one would expect, and I was fortunate to get in to see him quickly. Dr. Paul confirmed that my situation required surgical intervention and needed to be scheduled immediately. The surgery took place ten days later. His staff provided me with detailed instructions on preparing for surgery, including vitamins, hydration, and pain management. The surgery, while not minimally invasive (I was not a candidate), required one night's stay for observation. In reality, I felt like I could have walked out several hours after the procedure. The pain that I experienced before the surgery was gone entirely. It was as if the Dr took a stone out of my shoe. Dr. Paul is honest, caring, and straightforward in his advice, with a no-nonsense approach to your care, allowing you to make informed decisions. He is not a self-promoter or a man of many words. However, he is direct, honest, and an excellent surgeon. AWESOME!!! Had my back surgery and feel 20 years younger!!!! 6 weeks after surgery and am doing everything I did before (well, almost - I have to wait another 6 weeks before I can really let loose according to Doc). Was up and walking after surgery - I actually tried to teach a nurse how to belly dance when I was allowed out of bed to walk for the first time after surgery. She stopped me in time though and we just walked around the floor and to PT and OT, walked up and down steps, got up and down on chairs and mock car, etc., to make sure I would be ok at home during recovery. I used a walker at home for about a week, then went to a cane for two weeks (I was afraid of falling, otherwise I would not have used it), and now I'm able to run down the stairs (when my knees permit) like I used to do in my 30's. WITH NO PAIN!!!! Also, he used plastic surgeon stitches so the scar would be thin and very straight. I love to belly dance and was worried about the appearance the scar would have (in addition to the worry about my walking without pain). Bless Dr. Paul's hands. Bless all of his staff in his office. And God Bless all the staff at Edwards Hospital for their kindness, compassion, empathy, and for being so wise and knowledgeable in their field. read more

Dr. Paul performed a L2/L3 spinal fusion on me August 1st, 2016. I diligently followed all of his instructions for rehab and activity limits. I am now about 15 months out of surgery and I feel like I have my "old back" again. I have been exercising, lifting weights, working in the yard and so on for the past year. It has been remarkable and even better than I expected. I thought of writing this review today because I am tiling our laundry room and unloaded eight 70 pound boxes of tile from the car to the garage yesterday. Here I am today with no pain whatsoever! I am currently in the hospital after an L5-S1 TLIF fusiion and feel great. I have had very title pain after surgery and will be out of the hospital with only one day overnight. While I am young for this surgery, my recovery has been great. I went in unable to sit or walk with serious leg pain. Immediately after surgery my leg pain was gone and within a few hours I was up and walking. Dr. Paul is an extremely personable and caring surgeon and his PA Paul Ellis is also outstanding. I can't even begin to describe how awesome the surgery and appointments have been with Dr. RonJon Paul, MD. We live 3 1/2 hours South of Chicago and had visited a surgeon in Champaign-Urbana and St Louis (Washington University) at Barnes before making our first appointment with Dr Paul. Only minutes into our appointment with Dr Paul we knew that we had found our surgeon. My wife was the one who needed the surgery. Her spine was almost a grade 5 meaning that it had slipped forward at her L5-S1. She was in severe pain. The previous 2 doctors were going to make a 5-8 inch slit down the center of her lower back. One was going to fuse the joint as is and the other one said they might try to move it back just enough to get rid of the tipping, but would not be able to even come close to perfect alignment. When Dr Paul looked at my wife's X-rays and MRI results he immediately started to devise a plan. He said that he would make about 2 one inch cuts on each side of her spine which would decrease the risk of infection and increase recovery time. This definitely turned about to be the case in the end. Secondly, he told us that he would do this minimal invasive surgery that would get her alignment very close to being back to perfect alignment. He said that he would have additional resources in the surgery room with him to monitor the nerves so that he could very slowly reduce the slip. Everything that Dr. Paul told us he was going to do He did!!! He brought the spine back, lifted it up, put spacers in, fused it, and did it all through two small incisions. She never experienced any drop foot or any other issues. She was up walking the very next day. Obviously, by now you know we ended going with Dr Paul and I am ecstatic about the outcome. My wife is too of course. I am having trouble putting into words how excited, appreciative, grateful, etc I am with our experience with Dr Paul. He is just an awesome Dr who talks to you on your level and who never once made us feel like our questions were wasting his time! He spent time with us and has meet with us everytime we have returned for the follow appointments. Trust me when I tell you that you will not be sorry for choosing Dr. Paul. We prayed for quite sometime that God would lead us to the right Dr and never imagined it would be 3.5 hours away, but God lead us to him and every trip up there has been worth it. My wife is a new person just 8 months later. She had suffered back pain for 10 years prior to this surgery. I am normally bad about leaving reviews after a good experience, but I feel like I owe Dr Paul more than I could ever repay him. Our family has been greatly impacted by my wife's surgery! Dr Paul did a microdiscectomy for a herniated disc and my pain is GONE! I am back at work 2 weeks later. He did an excellent job. Dr Paul is in Naperville at Edward Hospital. Everyone has different results but I can say mine were beyond expectation. read more

Dr. Paul performed a TLIF, less invasive procedure on me. My recovery far surpassed that of friends who had the traditional fusion. He is an excellent surgeon and the most caring that I have met. I had 3 other opinions, all agreeing on what had to be done. Dr. Paul was the only one who used the TLIF. Also, his staff was superior and very attentive. After two previous failed lumbar fusions since 2011, I ended up in Dr. Paul's office in severe pain and unable to walk. I was suffering horribly and due to pain, had become a prisoner in my home. I underwent TLIF at L3 through L5 on 6/29/15. The first few days was rough, but by the time I was transferred to Marianjoy Rehab hospital, I was having nothing short of a remarkable recovery. I was released from rehab a full 8 days ahead of schedule and after 20 years of severe pain and narcotics, I am now pain free and narcotic free. I just completed my outpatient physical therapy and couldn't be more thrilled with the outcome. Dr. Paul was thorough and even met with my husband to explain what was going on when I felt my husband was not very supportive. After that meeting, my hubby had a major attitude shift and became the compassionate supportive spouse I needed. I will be forever grateful for his skill, and compassion. Dr. Paul is a great surgeon. Did a microdiscectomy on my lower back (L5-S1) on 5/21/15, I walked out of the hospital that same day. Now I am walking 2-4 miles a day, no more of the unbearable butt and leg pain, no more not being able to walk. Because I waited almost a year to see a surgeon, I have numbness in my calf, toes, and upper thigh. He said it could take up to a year to heal if at all. I am very thankful to him and how honest he was with me. I needed the surgery and that was that. Before going to him I tried PT, exercising , I lost weight, and was on all kinds of pills. It just got worse. Yes it's hard to get an appt, yes you have to see his assistant 1st. So what?! If you want a great surgeon this is what you have to go through. If you want an appt right away then go to a dr with bad reviews. To say Dr. Paul is excellent is an understatement. He is better than excellent. I have degenerative disc disease so this is not our last time seeing each other. I just hope he stays in Illinois because he is the only doctor I will ever go to for back and spine related issues. I do not believe the lady that gave the bad review about her surgery. Or that he turned into a monster. There is something fishy about her review. read more

When I had my 1st appointment, I was in such tremendous lower back pain I could not walk/sit/stand/sleep/work, no quality of life. Dr. Paul reviewed my tests, concisely diagnosed my issues, explained the surgical procedure clearly, and put me at total ease. In prep for my surgery (2/6/12), he ordered detailed pre-op tests. He was so thorough, that Thanks to Him, he determined that I had a blood disorder making me a High Risk for post-surgical blood clots. This disorder had never been discovered despite my yearly blood tests. He flawlessly performed my S/P Lumbar Fusion.
