With plenty of external wall space to prop your skis and snowboards against, you can enjoy a well-deserved après-ski beer (or a few) sat either outside or in. It was always buzzing when we visited, which was most days of our trip come to think of it. If you sit outside there's no need to go to the bar as they have table service which is fantastic. 'Happy Hour' finishes at 16:30 so be prepared to pay more for your drinks after that. The tables against the façade have heaters and are somewhat sheltered but the rest are open to the elements. Inside there's lots of seating but it can get very, very busy so you'll be lucky to get a seat if there's a group of you. Some evenings there's live music on here too which were really good. Tip: if you're getting lager and there's a few of you, opt for a jug instead of buying separately. You get roughly four pints to a jug.

Let me first state that had I been at least 10 years younger LFD Meribel would almost certainly be…read moregetting a higher score. Alas, its raison d'être is just not for me. During a recent ski trip our group ended up coming here twice so we got to see both sides of its 'character' for want of a better word. On the first visit it was literally pulsating with bass, booze, table dancing and excess. The (ahem) 'VIP section' was filled with the spoiled brats and rich elite we can imagine love these kind of places. When someone orders a huge bottle of champagne or spirit it is not simply brought to them by hand, but placed in a large perspex box and slowly pulled over the crowds below via a zip-line with pink smoke billowing from its top. Cue multiple smart phones videoing the spectacle. Not wanting to sound like a complete party pooper I have to admit that the atmosphere was infectious (I may have danced a wee bit to the Europop that was blaring from the speakers). I did, however, feel like a fish out of water here. The second visit was at lunchtime which was much quieter and overall more palatable (atmosphere wise and food wise). Though the meal options are on the expensive side (but what isn't in Les 3 Vallées?) there were plenty of decent things to choose from in their slick, spacious and modern restaurant inside. The place was busy with families, ski schools and groups alike, a world away from the rowdy table dancing the previous afternoon. Tip: the easiest way to get to LFD from Meribel town is via the Saulire gondola lift, exiting at its first stop and then skiing/walking down the slope a short distance. Tip: there's a gift shop for LFD merchandise should you wish to buy a memento (that is, if you have any money left after eating/drinking here).

Seeing people dancing on the…read moretables was default, and two of the days happened to coincide with Russian Holiday which, we learned, meant pretty girls in little fur panties shaking their cute little butts on the tables... Had lunch here one day. The inside of this restaurant (and I mean RESTAURANT, not that self-served part) is gorgeous. Monstrous cheese are covering the walls up to the ceiling, and tables are covered with white table cloth. We were starving and started begun our meal with an assortment of cheese. As expected, it was as mouthwatering and beautifully served as only happens in France. The main course, a chicken split in two, was pretty good too, but in comparison to the exceptional cheese I was not blown away. Meal was around 60 Euro with a bottle of wine and two beers for our company. Next day I was back, I chose only cheese, bread and wine. Mm.

La Folie Douce is the go-to place for Apres partying in the Alps. In my review of La Folie Douce at…read moreVal Thorens, I wrote that getting bottle service here would be refreshing for any American sick of sneaky upsells, snooty staff, and fees piled on top of fees. I found this to still be true at the Val D'Isere (Tignes) location, though this location is lackadaisical perhaps to a fault. If you are trying to book a VIP table (for which no minimum is listed but would generally be understood to be about 500 euro), you want to use the online form for "La Veranda." The main differences in setup here compared to VT are that the elevated VIP section here is split into an outside portion (4 tables) and an inside-ish portion (6 tables?). The outside portion doesn't have a direct line of sight to the DJ booth. Also, you can't order food here. We ordered burgers from the grill (which were delicious) and ate them before coming up. I would have loved the oysters (etc) that I enjoyed at VT instead. The one *positive* difference is that there is more space here and there is a stage for live performances, which is really cool to witness even if you're just skiing past. The bottle menu is not particularly expensive and there are no hidden fees. Service was great and the party went until 5pm. One thing I found weird here was that in the inner VIP area, there was a family of 20+ with children (not just under 18 but also much younger). It was surprising that the kids were allowed in to begin with, but they were also allowed to commingle with the dance floor and with the outer VIP area. Other weird thing was that we wanted to purchase one more bottle before last call. My friend got tricked into buying a magnum with the classic "we're all out of 750s." Though the staff was friendly in their parting, they didn't really provide any instructions as to getting down the mountain or anything and we found the bouncers to be rather cold when it came to the end of the day (big difference from Cloud 9 and others).

To…read morecompare it to establishments that attempt to recreate this atmosphere in North America, the music / emceeing at La Folie Douce Val Thorens was phenomenal, the setting is unbeatable, the crowd was much more authentic, and the minimum spend was very reasonable. There are people who take ski trips to Europe just to party at places like this, and you don't need to spend more than 20 minutes here to understand why. Even the food is good. The service in the VIP section was exceptional. At Cloud 9 at Aspen you get rich kids from LA who don't know how to ski and at Longhorn at Whistler you get all the tech bros from Seattle who go there so often that to them it's just another Saturday. You'll definitely see more champagne sprayed per capita at one of those other places, but at La Folie Douce you'll get to focus on living in the moment, not trying to fit into the frame of someone else's moment that you saw on social media a month before your trip.
